Cherry Burl Platter - Wood Turning

I turn a beautiful platter from an old piece of wood picked up at a yard sale. No one is more surprised than me at what was in that piece of cherry. A challenging piece, due to the gaps in the piece, but turned out nice, nevertheless.

Beautiful piece Phil - one of my favourites. It puts me in mind of the shield of an ancient soldier which has been damaged in battle and then left buried in the ground of the battlefield and been rusted and patina'd by the elements and the centuries and then unearthed and cleaned and shined by an archaeologist who recognised its history and significance but who left its flaws to demonstrate its purpose. I know the wood is not centuries old but it shows its age and its flaws and its purpose is now no longer as a tree but as a platter. It is still a piece of history though and you brought that to life with your skill and imagination. You have a gift Phil, truly.

It's one of my very favorite pieces too, JN! This piece has a bit of a story. I was at a yard sale and this was standing behind an open door. I told the guy I wanted it and he said he had a couple more pieces out in the yard. I bought all three pieces for 7 dollars. This is the only one of those I have turned. The others are a large end-grain Cherry and a 4x8x4ft. piece of Walnut. I only hope the others are as spectacular as this piece is. It really surprised me! Going back through your videos Phil & spotted this & thought, that’s going to be one to watch. Certainly not disappointed. What a great piece of wood to start with. Some of the features look like it had a burl that penetrated inwards & the bird’s eyes are really nice. I’d call that a gallery piece. That piece presented some real challenges Phil! It looks like the edge of a burl because of the grain going in so many directions. If it s cherry, it's a huge one. It turned out to be a beautiful piece. Good job. "I am still envious of the deal you got on your new lathe...." LOL

Absolutely love cherry burl. We do get a decent amount of it here in Georgia, but you do have to go looking for it. That is one big burl. I have a cherry tree in my back yard with one about a third that size. Not ready to cut it off yet. But i do look forward to the day I can turn it. They make such beautiful pieces. Great job, my favorite so far.

That wasn't a deal........ that was a steal. Even around here where you can find it, if they know what they have you would pay $50-$100 for that piece, unturned. Obviously they didn't know what they had. That's the great part about buying rough cut, something truly beautiful may be hiding in plain sight. May the second piece be as beautiful as the first.

It's true, I don't think they knew it was a burl, but neither did I! I forgot, it was actually three pieces of wood. The third one is also cherry. It's about 4"x6" by about four feet long. Don't know what I will do with that, but it's there if I need it. All three pieces were behind an open door. I just peeked back there and asked. I don't think the guy even knew they were there. Some days ya just get lucky! ;)

Lucky is better then smart any day. Plane the 4' piece to see if it's burl. Hand plane along the 2 edges just enough to see the grain. If it is you could cut it into blocks and glue them together into a platter size unit. Lot of work, but with burl it's usually worth it. Just thinking out loud, sometimes too loud. lol

Phil, when you use your square scraper lift your right hand to put it into a negative rake it will cut cleaner. Otherwise a great job.
