Not really sure if this is considered a hollow form, or not. Doesn't look like a bowl, to me, but whatever it is, it was challenging. The natural bark around the opening caused all kinds of problems while sanding. Please Like, Subscribe and Share, if you are so inclined.

I am so glad I found your videos. The most important thing I have learned from you is patience, and secondly is don't try to take more than the wood will give you. There is beauty is every stump, root, and limb!

Phil, I love the way at the start, because the "wing" sticks out so far, it looks like magic! There is nothing there, but there are chips flying off it! Like I said, MAGIC!! The finished article looks amazing and I would DEFINITELY call it a hollow form!! Well done, Phil!

Beautiful job! You made that look so easy. It's my favorite form of bowl to turn but I really struggle with them. I finally broke down and bought a carbide scraper for hollow form bowls. I really don't like using it but it does make it a little safer when you're really going in deep

What a stunning piece here, produced by the gifted Phil Anderson. I'm serious about both those comments. I just love everything about your turning videos. Your pieces always have that 'WOW' factor about them. Letting us into your thoughts & problem solving is always such a delight & educational too. As a retired Senior Master of Art (teaching) it is great to have you always letting the particular piece wood you are working with help in the forming of your thoughts & helping you to release the beauty within. This is the 'creative process' at work & it means that you are always 'up for the fight'. Keep up your great work & let the creative juices continue to flow as you must surely be an inspiration to other wood turners both experienced & beginners alike. Fabulous piece my friend in every way you look at it. (PS - I wish you would try the white & silver pens I have told you about for signing these dark woods.) Don from South Aust.

Hi Phil, While watching you finishing off the bottom of this uneven bowl you needed to hold it steady with one hand and polish with the other I got a light bulb moment. How about a bean bag, I am sure with most of you work being uneven a bean bag would be an asset. Just a thought. Take care, Tim.

Great observation! I've tried to find one, Tim. I didn't spend a whole lot of time but searching the web for a half hour resulted in finding nothing that would do the trick. They are all too firm, too small, whatever. I had another use for one, too but just gave up! 😊

Great piece no matter what you call it. You always amaze me when you cut off the tenon, I'd want a pedal switch, but you always get it turned off at the perfect time. Jim Miller is right Rebel Turner doses some crazy stuff. I always expect his pieces to fly apart, but like yours they don't. Good sign of a great turner.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 6 жыл бұрын
It's easier than you might think, Timothy. Removing the tenon is really simple, as long as the piece isn't really big or off-balance. With those, I stop short and cut it off with a chisel. I watch Al all the time and he definitely gives me inspiration. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, truly appreciated!

Always like turning black walnut , Looks so nice . I have made a few " hollow form " takes time but worth it , made tops to mind . Sand carefully , I use my battery Ryobi vac to clean out quickly . Don't worry about forgetting the sand paper on the tool ...been there ...many things on your mind , thinking what to do with the wood . I have made a " ball end hook tool " , out of scrap wood and stapled sand paper to get in the hollow .

Good GRIEF, I'm in love! (Also, as a relative newcomer to KZbin, I don't understand why this has 15 thumbs down. Consider me confused.)

Looks like a chiminey Phil. An angle grinder with a sanding pad in it would work well under that bark on the inside.

Truly enjoy your videos. Painful to see you struggle so much to sand the inside to get after that end grain. I'm just a rookie turner, but I am finding that using a curved scraper can be very effective in dealing with rough end grain, prior to applying finer sanding grits. Beautiful piece. Gives me an idea of how to deal with a chunk of wood that has some interesting small burls on the bark. I say it's a hollow form.

If it's hollow on the inside, it's a hollow form. It came out nice, well done.

Lovely piece, two things, a hollow form defined is - when the mouth of the piece is less that the equator of the piece, so you have a hollow form. Have you seen the stick sanders with the 2"/3" pads attached, there are a couple of self builds on KZbin and I know that here in the UK SImon Hope sells them, they'll certainly leave your fingers in one piece. Keep them coming

Wow, I can't get over how thick that bark is! You said at the end it was fun to turn but it was stressful for me Lol. I was too worried about an accident and losing that beautiful bark! You sound like me talking to myself lol, Well should I do this or that? I have no idea but let's do it anyway and find out! Ha ha haa! People say I talk to myself a lot and I say, I needed expert advice! Are you getting any better? Hope so

Just a thought - - Harbor Freight sells an abrasive sponge ball. This might be good on a stick to get the inside of hollowforms

That’s always kind of tuff turning because the out side edge is blind cutting because you don’t really see the edge. Sometimes you just have to go for it my biggest concern is all the work leading up to cutting is I get catch and knocking bark off looks great to me-nice job !
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, TCK! The catches will eventually subside and become an extreme rarity. I used to get them ALL the time! I didn't think I would ever become a woodturner. Determination and a light touch will take you far! Phil
