Another lovely bowl, Phil. I really like how you left the "wonky" edges and face. To reassure you, I can see the undulations (& it DOES look like a spaceship!). This video in particular shows a number of the things I enjoy about your work. Firstly, you don't assume that we all know everything about turning, so you explain what you are doing and (more importantly) WHY! Also, your very clear enjoyment of the whole process is really infectious. You bring us along with you and keep us involved. And then there is the bowl itself. I wouldn't've thought there was much in that lump of "firewood" at the start & yet you made a lovely bowl that looks like a spaceship!! Thanks Phil. Keep up the great work!

Howdy Phil Burls is always nice to work with..... Wish I had plenty of them...... Add a piece of oak burl.. I made Peppermill ... a soap dish I saved it from the fire place . had a piece of maple burl lady gave me from The Sawmill ...I think I sent you pictures of what was made three tier jewelry box . Yes I was wondering if every beginning of you video you did say maple . I figured you would have correct yourself later . When I first saw you peace remind me me of the three sided bowl you made from a cube . Wow in the 50's .... It was in the single numbers few days ago here today we might see 40 .... Below average this month . " Tickled pink " people laugh at me when I use that expression they never heard of it ...... I believe I got it from my grandfather . Definitely can look like a spaceship.... set it upside down on top of a needle with a light behind it take pictures .....sell as a UFO to the magazines LOL.... Say it's what landed next to that burnt piece of wood you have in your backyard . That finish you put on that burl is so awesome . the part I cannot wait to when I do a turning .....the finish .

Dang Phil that is way cool. Can you say Cherry Burl Bowl 3 times as fast as you can without thinking Spaceship? I cant and you are right I love the flames coming off the back of that spaceship. Those 3 edges offer something different. One is straight one is curved and one is natural. Nice planing on that one.That grain is really out of this world. Glad you saved that scrap. Although I am sure you are like me. No such thing as a scrap. I have a piece of Catalpa that is coming up soon that could have been called a scrap. Beautiful wood and bowl. Did you like doing the mortise for the jaws? Also, I used to use the same finish. It dulls after a while if you don't keep putting it on. I have changed to wipe on poly. I like it very much. Wipe it on and keep wiping until it gets past sticky and hardens. I thought you might like to try it as well. Again beautiful bowl!

I believe I heard you mention the words "scared" and "afraid". Dad use to tell me how he was afraid to take just a little more off or how he was a bit scared it would all go to "Hell in a hand basket in a second." He showed me several pieces over the years that were at one time almost beautiful and then literally blew up in the lathe. He said it happened a lot less when he got rid of his first less expensive lathe and bought a JET also. He said you must have weight in a lathe for it to be good. I think his first lathe was a Craftsman or CRAPSMAN as he would call it sometimes.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
"Never make the final pass" is something I learned long ago. Your dad was absolutely right! Also sounds like he uses the same phrases and slang as I. Must be of similar age. Thank you for watching and commenting and for reminiscing about your dad! Phil
@kagnewmp125 жыл бұрын
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Your more my age probably as I'm 66 and Dad was born in 1925 and started working with wood in the 1960s. He had a Heart Attack in the 70s and quit smoking and moved to Ocala Florida and dedicated his whole life to working his lathe till we lost him in 02 much to young. I will look around but I might have some pieces of wood he never got to finish. You mentioned someone sent you some wood. Just how would I do that. It would be nice to see someone as good as he was be able to finish a piece he never was able to.

Ah, I understand. Yeah, I'm 71. You know, I've often thought of what would happen to a piece I'm working on if I wasn't able to finish it. I always hoped someone would take over, but who knows? You can contact me at madronawoodworks@gmail.com

Beautiful turning Phil, just stunning! I have never seen a bowl shaped like this and it came out great! The figure is just unbelievable. Now I might know what to do with some of the odd shapes scraps I have building up on me. All nice pieces of wood, just such shapes that I have been hesitating. Good call on taking down the pointy bits from natural Edge of the Burl......although you could have left it and when someone pricks themselves you just tell them it's part of the art experience, it symbolizes the pain of the art process blah blah blah.....no it's best to just take the darn things down a bit and make it safe and comfortable to handle lol Btw congrats on breaking through the 5000 sub mark! I see Gary is just about to hit 1000 as well! Keep it up! Kyler

Ok Phil , which is it maple or cherry? Kinda looks like maple to me but I never can grow tired of burl .After my father was wounded in WW2 Germany he found himself in A hospital in England with a beautiful young nurse scraping the mud , blood and whiskers from his face . He apologized to the lady for having to clean him up . She said to him " there is nothing I'd rather do more, I like to see what's under the next layer".( true story) but anyway I believe that the same logic can be applied to the turning of burl.👍

Great story of your dad, Randy! And, you're right, you just never know what's inside. The problem with that is, you find something great and wonder if there is something even better a little deeper. So, you decide to find out and whoops, it looked better before! LOL! This is a Cherry burl. It's a cutoff from a Cherry platter I did. I never imagined it could look as good as it does. Thanks for watching and commenting, Randy, much appreciated! Phil

Some one else also asked "what exactly is the finish?" I heard "Howard Feed Wax", that can't be. What is it please?

Howard Feed & Wax is the finish I used on this piece, James. Easy to apply, dries quickly and leaves a nice sheen. Phil

Phil I have an idea for you ,a strob light that will flash at the same speed as the object being turned ,this will let you see them wings,take it from a guy that turned a Texas bowl(el,paso is a bitch)

Thanks, Billy. I'm pretty sure that would screw up my video, at least the lighting of it but probably the focus as well.
