the C&O’s J3a’s were the final steam locomotives delivered to the railroad. Only (5) of this upgraded 4-8-4 class were built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1948. They were named Greenbriers after the famous Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulfer Springs, WV. All were retired by 1955, but due to an increase in freight traffic the following year, a few were briefly reactivated for service. #614 sat dormant for 25 years until she was restored in 1980 to replace Reading 2101 to power the Chessie Safety Express. In 1985 she was used as the test locomotive for the ACE 3000 Project, and in 1997, she was used to power numerous trips out of Hoboken to Port Jervis on the Erie mainline. Today: #614 is the only surviving J3a of the (5) built. #614 sits on display awaiting restoration at the C&O Railway Heritage Museum in Clifton Forge, VA

My late dad, bivouaced in Phillipines with 1st Marines after Battle for Pelelieu, was pretty well known for being the loudest, most melodic & on key, baritone in Sunday troop chapel services. Tex Beneke (who did the C&O tune here) & his Orchestra, (Glenn Miller was long gone by then) did a USO show @ the base there; base c.o. called my dad in sat. morning after breakfast & ordered him to sing for Mr. Beneke, sitting there in a chair, as he'd been sick all week and couldn't possibly perform vocals for this show. He did pass that short audition, did the show in front of 15,000 plus, told me yrs. later that 6 combat campaigns & decorations in 2 wars (ww2, Korea), "that" was the most terrified he'd ever been; could barely recall much of it; said it went by in a flash. After final bows, he collapsed on a bench backstage with a 20 min. panic attack. Cool song; I doubt he did that one; not 1 their big hits, anyhow; and that's 1 my fav. war stories. By way, he manned a flamethrower at Pelelieu, and that USO show still scared heck out of him more 😎

Nice vids, by the way. Oddly, not all that much C&O stuff out there, at least I've seen. Guess HerronRail has one, I've not seen it yet, though.

614, 2716, 1309 and the Allegheny are the most memorable for the C&O

The Allegheny is a highlight for me whenever I visit the Henry Ford Museum, and I saw a weather-battered Kanawha (not 2716) at the Illinois Railway Museum twice.
