The George Washington was a named passenger train of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway running on a route between Cincinnati, Ohio and Washington, D.C.It began service in 1932 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the first president of the United States. When the George Washington was inaugurated as C&O's top-notch train on April 30, 1932, it was one of only two all-air-conditioned, long-distance trains operating in America. (the other was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's Capitol Limited, which was instituted as an all-air-conditioned train only a week or so before the George Washington. New equipment was not built for this train; instead, older cars that were completely refurbished by Pullman and by C&O shops. It was still a few years before the streamliner craze, so C&O persisted with the standards of the time using its solid, heavy cars. The Pullman Company normally lettered its sleepers in a standardized fashion so that they could be interchanged and routed in any train in the United States with some uniformity, but there were some "name trains" to which specific cars were assigned on a regular basis, and C&O's George Washington was one of these. They differed from the standard Pullman sleepers in that they had the name of the train at the center of the letterboard where "PULLMAN" was usually placed, while the word "PULLMAN" was relocated to the end of the letterboard in small letters

That narrator pronounced Cincinnati the way my Grandparents used to; "Cincinnatta." Tell ya I was born in the wrong era. What a fabulous train!

The Van Sweringen Brothers had three railroads control. The C&O, it’s subsidiary Pere Marquette, and the Nickel Plate Road. This was a very much a part of the system.

My great granddaddy worked for the C&O as a ticket seller for passengers. I’m now a member of their society.

Well this was shot in 1932, during the Great Depression. I don't think too many people had the privilege to travel that way.

Words can't explain how much I love this, not just for the GW, the C&O, or Cincinnati, but just as a rail advertisement, or advertisement for that matter, beautiful top tier gold - Respect, humility, class, and elegance (without being corny or sense of making stuff up)

Interesting video,re but there obviously some pretty big chunks of it missing toward the enr. Probably just the way it goes with a movie this old. The overall quality of the photography is a lot better than other films of the early thirties.

What you have here is the first 12 minutes of a film that runs almost one hour. I just received a 16mm copy, and it was missing the first 10 minutes, trying to figure the production date of the film.

Hakeem Sd70M no the 20th Century Limited ran along the NYC’s “Water Level Route” which was along the Great Lakes in to Chicago. The Cardinal comes down in to Indiana, Ohio, and in to West Virginia, Virginia, and up towards New York

Very interesting promotional film for that era. Everyone dressed up to travel. Smoking allowed. White tablecloths with special requests to the kitchen honored. This would be a good film for kids to see in a history or social studies class. Whites in first class, minorities in the kitchen or carrying the luggage. The "good old days." To which my Black friends would reply. "Yeah, good for you. Not so much for us."

Appreciate it for what the film is...history of a by gone era. Seriously it Doesn't require making it a racial issue!
