The real challenge against Stockfish might actually be not to draw. After a while, it will recognize that it cannot win against a board full of pawns and try to arrange a draw

This gave me another idea: Pitfall Chess. Every time one of your pieces steps on a square, the floor cracks when they leave it. The second time a piece steps on that square and leaves it, the floor breaks and you can’t go there anymore. Of course Martins pieces can because his chessmen all have hover boots 😊 Could potentially be too easy with Martin…

I think the problem is it's near impossible to kill the pawns. You have to somehow start taking them early and the opponent to not play many non-pawn moves... or in other words Knight moves, as they are the only pieces who can move around the board with the slime pawn line in the way. So essentially for each move black makes, they get +1 pawn. At best, for each move you make you remove a pawn. However black can all too often take back, meaning you are down a piece and Black as lost nothing. This becomes more true as the game progresses and black gets more rows of complete pawn lines. Thinking about it some more, the first 8 black moves should be double moving the pawns, and then it is impossible for white to win. Any white piece trying to attack the slime wall just gets absorbed.

as soon as you prevent white's horses from attacking the king, black can't lose. white can't kill, or avoid, black pawns. best strategy for white? force a drawback.

I think the evaluation for the values of a slime pawn is way more than 1 point, especially the center pawns. The best move is probably to play extremely aggressively, sacrificing bishops and queens for the center pawns, making sure the remaining pawns can't support each other, or only support the side pawns, leaving you with an attack on the center

Sacrifice doesn't work since after the pawn take the piece, a pawn is added at it's old position So you will have a pawn where the pawn was AND where your piece was

When inserted in analysis, stockfish evaluates the position as -19,7. In this game, stockfish left the chat, took a smoking break and came back to give a statistical comment on the position, while being fully baked

An alternative version (an easier one) that you could try is "new pawns are added if and only if the bot moved one of its 8 initial pawns". This would require to keep track of the position of these 8 initial pawns but that should be doable.

It takes almost no time until the computer isn't allowed to do anything other than a pawn move. As soon as that happens, they are incapable of losing material. It's a losing game and I'm surprised that even Martin gave one away

I think the strategy here would be attacking extremely aggressively as fast as possible at the start, losing probably a bishop or a queen right away. But once you've done that you've made a breach in the pawn wall, and this can be exploited for a quick checkmate.

I have another idea for a challenge against Martin: I would call it upgrade chess and I explain its rules below: After each move you have to upgrade any of his pieces like following: A pawn (1) is substituted by a bishop or knight (3) A bishop or knight (3) should be replaced by a rook (5) And finally, a queen (9) can be an upgrade of a rook (5) If no upgrades are possible, just add another pawn anywhere on the board. You can also decrease the difficulty by applying the aforementioned rules only every 2 or 3 moves

Reminds me of the times as a kid when we would play chess with half a board (8x4) so your pawns were right up against the enemy pawns and you could instantly promote a pawn if the two spaces ahead of it were free. I think we also had to make a rule that pawns were weaker and could only capture other pawns to avoid instant checkmates.

I have an idea how to beat slime chess: If you take the only pawn in a column he can't get new ones in that column. So you sac a few pieces to get some gone, thereby allowing the bot to make non-pawn moves. Won't be easy, but I think that is at least possible

Ok the things with this rule is if the bot just move pawn first 5 turn. There is a high possibility that they won't even have the space to move the pieces. Then every turn they have to move the pawn which mean giving them +1 pawn again and you can only remove 1 pawn a turn so...basically impossible against not so dumb bot

Yeah so I'm 1000 and tried that vs stockfish and beat it by only moving pawn that were in "D" and "E" (allowed to take outside but not move the resulting pawns), it's just not possible to win against that setup as long as the opponent takes pieces (which is why it's even possible vs martin it just doesn't really play moves), The thing is that the action economy is absolutely too much in your favor, any move your opponent can make is useless because if they don't kill a pawn you just create more and if they take one you will take back without losing a piece. Also the weakness of pawns is that they can't move backwards and leave vulnerabilities when they move or take which is completely negated by the rules. So like, you can't really bait weakness, all you can do is attack a weakness that was already there and hope they don't see it, so like, fools mate is pretty much your only option that can even physically work, you can't even pin a pawn with those rules (technically you can against bot cause they won't play the move they think is illegal but you shouldn't be able to). So anyone who just pays attention to mate in 1 threats is going to be fine. I'm pretty sure I could VERY easily beat magnus with those rules (yes that'd be harder than stockfish cause he'd actually be aware the rules are there, probably can't beat him with the extra limitation of only moving pawns in D and E but probably can beat him if I'm not even allowed to move pieces only pawns, that's how ridiculously strong those rules are).
