Anna is great. She always prepares well for her students, listens to them to know where they're at, and puts the right challenge in front of them to take the next step. I've been surprised to find myself learning really useful stuff from Andrea Botez, too. She's not a natural chess player, but she has mental checklists that help her focus her easily-distracted mind on the most important things on the board every turn. For a weak player like me that's really useful, especially in the middle game.

I've seen quite a few of these Pogchamp coaching sessions (including Naroditsky, Levi and Nakamura) and I believe Anna is the best for the least experienced students. She is very patient and focuses on the thought process moreso than specific openings and situations. Also I love that these sessions are available for free!

Michelle is a very attentive learner. She seems to take on board everything her teachers say. Watching some of the PogChamps 2 tutoring videos, it's sort of difficult to watch with how nervous they are to get the answer wrong, but Michelle isn't afraid of that, she gives what she thinks is the right answer, and always takes on board the feedback she gets from it. I think she needs to work on her situational awareness, seeing what's attacking what, what's defending what, that sort of thing, but once she's got that, she'll be a very strong contender for PC3 winner.

my goodness. nothing but immense respect for both Anna and Michelle. Especially for Michelle, because she ventured way out of her comfort zone to take on an unfamiliar challenge with nothing but a lot of pain, humiliation, and suffering at least in the short term. No, seriously. If we grow by persevering through failure, and gain wisdom by learning what doesn't work, then this makes her a hero in my book. And Anna! Such generosity of spirit! Damn. Wonderful to see players supporting each other like this. All of us benefit from it.

Michelle obviously is a good thinker. She asked the qestion "What questions do you ask yourself when choosing a move?" Right questions allow good thinkers to learn fast. It`s an example of meta-thinking. Bad thinkers don`t ask such questions. Good and bad thinkers are seen from afar. I`d answer the question more concretely - first of all, 1. Look at the position of the kings. 2. look at the squares the piece will immediately take under control (also at the x-rays) 3. Look at the unprotected pieces. If you still have enough time, also look at the squares it can attack later, and so on. But first things first.

1:33:00 A better way to discribe why a forcing move like Rc7 gains time is because the opponent has now no time to take the knight on b5 but has to move his queen and now you got the time save your knight or even atack with the knight on A7 to win the next piece.

I know it's unlikely that you read this but Anna, if you give her another class bear this in mind: she seems from time to time a little bit scared of doing or proposing something that might be wrong or taken as silly, encourage her to talk out loud her thinking process even more so you can give her even better further advice (at the same time making the stream more entertaining). Tell her not to be afraid of getting wrong 'cause the more fearlessly she explores possibilities the more likely she is to see something further or better and to not be so restrained thinking she might get it wrong, 'cause she's just started learning so this is the time to be wrong sometimes, when being wrong is safer, expectable and also can help you leading yourself towards better thinking processes and away from inaccurate ones. I think that might help her gain confidence and learn in a more "easygoing" way.

Michelle should play against Pokimane. From an instructor standpoint, it would kill two birds with one stone. In a single game, they would see where both players need to improve. Often, engine lines are too advanced for humans to understand. A human selecting which positions to provide feedback on is much better than relying too much on engine analysis. Lastly, Michelle vs Pokimane would simply make good content.

I'm not a good player. Problematic 1000 ELO for lichess, but it was very difficult to watch how she could initially replace the bishop with a rock standing on a8, and she ignored it. Then when the bishop fell on another trap on the A6, and could be taken for free and again it was ignored.
@InfiniteUniverse88
@InfiniteUniverse88 4 жыл бұрын
She didn't even know the value of the pieces when she did that. There's an exercise on Lichess for that. It should be standard practice for students to do those exercises so that their trainer can better gauge their skill level. Also, by doing those beginner exercises, the student will improve their skill level. The order people learn things matters. Lichess ranks the exercises in a logical order. Streamers always teach things that are too advanced, only to find out there was something more elementary the student should have known first. With that said, the castlemania motif was a major breakthrough. Even though everything else probably went over her head, at least there was that.
