I like the fact that he is using a real board and pieces. You don't see that very often these days.

waaaaaaay better than digital. personaly i play the same with digital but i kinda dont see check mates (in 2-4 moves or smt) on digital as often as i do normaly

It is nice but since it's on video it's still 2D. So, better in 2D in the first place.

Just a minor detail because some players will try to trick you :) If the attacking side (so in this case white) is trying to be crafty and make waiting moves themselves instead of advancing the pawn, so for example, after 1...Ra6 2. Rb7, black doesn't have to do anything just hold the 6th rank with the rook: 2...Rc6 3. Ra7 Rb6 4. Rh7 Ra6 etc. I'm really liking this series, John. It's always good to have the basics reviewed a bit. I hope you will eventually get to more complex endgames like N+B+K vs K and Q+K vs R+K too, that'd be amazing :) Cheers!

I enjoy the analogness of watching this on a real chess board. I understand it's likely easier to whirl through these easily online however I appreciate the use and effort of using a real board. Thanks again, J-dog.

Your end game vids are very useful, you should probably create a playlist for these series on your channel (there is an end game exploration playlist but it is not populated).

@aryesegal19888 жыл бұрын
would like to know as well! also the pieces, what set are these?
@ja773r8 жыл бұрын
You can get many sets of this quality on Amazon. One would generally buy board and pieces separately. I'd say his board is 21-23 inch. My board was around £60 and pieces were £100. But anywhere between £100 and £200 would get you a great set.

@TonyRotella8 жыл бұрын
Those specific pieces are actually quite famous - called the "ultimate" set, they're no longer available. I think in around 2013-2014, the manufacturer in China went under, and the mold disappeared. Since, no one has been willing to cough up the time, effort, and $10-20k necessary to create a new/identical injection molding operation. You can find other triple weighted plastic pieces, and identical or nearly identical boards from places like Wholesale Chess or House of Staunton. Good luck!

Thanks, John! 5:04 what if white rook is on 7th rank and black king is on e8 or e7? Still Ra5 is recommended or Ra6 or any waiting move?
@fisher007698 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really matter, that will just eventually transpose into the first example if white wants to make any progress. So for example 1... Ra5 2. e5 Ra4+ 3. Kf5 Ra6! =

What if the white rook is defended by the king and he offers a rook trade?
@GaryLuKOTH2 жыл бұрын
Just take the rook and then after he recaptures, maintain the draw (if you are studying endgames, you should know how to draw king vs. king and pawn in some situations). Whether he recaptures with his king or with his pawn, it is impossible for his king to be optimally placed after that.
