The mens division in chess is actually open division like most sports, but women most of the time choose to not compete in it because there is no point. The womens division is however strictly for women and i think its good that they put their foot down and let women have their protected space. Why should women lose out on scholarships or chances of success because biological men want to invade their space? Its not okay in chess and its not okay in other sports. This is a none issue because biological men who identify as women can just compete in the open division (mens division), since women are also allowed there. So there should really be no controversy here.

The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women.

Yeah it's important to remember that there is no men's chess ranking or tournaments. There are chess tournaments and there are women's chess tournaments. Less women play chess, and it's often that women who compete in the open tournaments will find themselves to be the only woman at the event, or one of very few. The purpose of women's events is to make it so that women don't have to worry about being the only woman in the entire tournament hall.

I think something important to note that got left out of this conversation is that there are women only ranks, like women Grandmaster which requires a lower rating compared to "normal" Grandmaster. My assumption is that this is to make chess more approachable/inclusive, you want to make sure that the less represented sex are included. Hence female only competitions. Some games like Valorant also do this. Now with this being said, especially in a non-physical sport like chess, I can see why they would be apprehensive to allow trans women to play in women only tournaments, because there is definitely a slippery slope that could result in hurting the people that women only tournaments are suppose to support. I would argue that because chess is a non-physical sport, there is no harm for trans people to continue playing in exclusively male (unisex) tournaments until we have further research/more examples of how trans women playing in female only sport affect a sport/scene.

Not completely the same, in chess there is a vast difference between men and women and thats why they have two different divisions for men and women. A male grandmaster will win 9/10 matches vs a female grandmaster. Its good for women to have their own spaces to express themselves, lets not take away womens rights.

@@getgot3461 Well there isnt much research done on chess specifically besides the statistics and rankings for example Magnus Carlsen which is the highest ranking player in the world beat the highest ranking female chess player 5-0 and 1 draw in classical chess. This is also not a rare occurance. But if we look at IQ distribution studies done on men vs womenits pretty clear that women have similar if not higher average IQ to men. Howerver it differs at the extremes. Meaning the lowest IQ people in the world are all men and the highest IQ people in the world are also men. This extreme plays a big part when you are looking at top of the world chess players but also at other parts of life like prison population being like 93% male. You can google articles on " men vs women IQ distribution curve" for more context if you want. As a chess player and teacher i also think the interest for young girls is not as big as it is for young boys. If that is social programing or biological i dont know. I think as more women play chess the gap will become smaller, but i think it wont go away completely. Hence why i think its important to have a women exclusive division to encourage women to compete in chess, get scholarships, trophies etc and the open category unless things change in the future.

Men don’t do better bc they’re smarter. Hikaru did a whole video breakdown on the subject. Women are just way less interested in chess as a whole. This creates a selection bias. There odds are there is going to be more super geniuses playing chess in a larger sample size. If equal numbers of women played chess there would probably be a lot more female grandmasters. Chess is male dominated and sexism can further alienate women from the sport

Theoretically if this was true the rating distribution of men and women would look the same, but that’s not what we see. If you compare the elo ratings of the top 5% of men and women’s ratings you will find for men it’s about ~2300 and women it’s ~2150. Basically the conclusion we can take from this is men either take the game more seriously than women therefore play better, or are simply better at the game.

Complete excuse. If you're a woman & great at chess, you'll be able to compete against the best. MALE OR FEMALE. Men are generally LESS interested in cooking than women, so how is it the best chefs are still men? Stop making excuses, men are simply better at chess than women. I can give you an even better example. White men dominate golf. Black men aren't really interested in it. But Tiger Woods (a black man), is one of the greatest. There's NO EXCUSE. If you're great, you're great. The fact is most women aren't great at chess relative to men.

To Ryan's point about "guying up the place," the whole trans conversation supposes those are social constructs, just like gender is, so there is no 1 way to be a woman or a man for that matter... so the guy claiming to be a woman to join the event doesn't have to adhere to any of those constructs, and that's where rhe absurdity comes in... when you say women need their spaces, the concept of a women is whatever they feel it is, so "guying up" a place is transphobic to the ppl who advocate for this. That's why the question "what is a woman," is so difficult to answer for them and why ppl can exploit these situations... like that male student that claimed to be trans to get into a competitive engineering program, bc it was considering women to create gender "equality"

Yes, Biological Men and Women do have differences in cognition, for example men have an advantage in Spatial Cognition and Mental Rotation, 2 Cognitive skills usefull in chess.

Why is there even a women’s division in chess of all things? I can understand physical sports, but chess is 100% mentally strategic. I did look up that they do have only women competitions as a way of encouraging other women into the game. However, being trans literally has nothing to do with this kind of competition. If a trans woman won female only chess tournament, would people really say she only one because she was a man?

In today's time the feminist movement has made strides, it would be publicly and politically unacceptable for men to so blatantly infiltrate on womens spaces. The difference is the bathroom in your home is used one person at a time and is usually just other family members. not strangers. Stranger danger is an actual thing esp. when you are in the vulnerable position of being in the bathroom.
