One correction! While the Instagram quote about not harming chickens, etc. is apparently from Peter Dinklage, the Instagram account (despite having millions of followers) is a fan account so the quote is NOT from 2022. I don't think Peter Dinklage was ever vegan and probably not even vegetarian. His story timeline doesn't add up. Then there is "Sergeant Vegan" on social media who enlisted in the military as a medic after 9/11. He was deployed to Iraq and remained vegan the entire time he was in the middle east during a war. He said he traded his non-vegan meals for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and apples. That's what he ate every day, as an ethical vegan he was not willing to compromise. That's veganism!

1:57 I did go to Croatia myself in 2018 as a vegan during my first Sabbatical. Eating vegan was way more challenging in in Croatia than it was while I was Couchsurfing in Germany and Austria. In Samobor, all I could eat were french fries and salad at a sit-down restaurant. Sorbet is easy to find. Zagreb did have a vegan macrobiotic restaurant that was quite good, but the prices were much higher than buying food at a grocery store and cooking at my host's place. A lot of the regular restaurants in Zagreb could modify vegetarian dishes to make them vegan, so that was good. A pizzeria in Rijeka made the best pizza, vegan or otherwise, I ever had with pesto (that the waiter assured me repeatedly could be prepared without dairy), caramelized onions, sundried tomatoes, and olives. I ordered two and walked a ton afterward. So, yeah, you do spend a lot of time trying to find food, but I did not go to Dubrovnik or Split, so it may have been different over there. In short, Croatia is much more challenging to eat out daily as a vegan compared to how it is to do so in major cities in Germany and Austria (I went to all of the federal states in both countries), central Ohio, NYC, or Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It's much easier to get more vegan options now without any hassle of asking for modifications, which is mainly an inconvenience in social settings and not when eating by yourself.

@@barbaraibiel Hard pass. I am not traveling internationally to eat a can of beans from the grocery store. I already did something like when I went to a beach resort in the Dominican Republic that made me mostly eat rice and beans as they didn't have that many vegan options, even though Santo Domingo has a ton of options. In Europe, I will eat the local bread that happens to be vegan and some hummus, which is what I did when I was tired of dealing with the lack of options on the Happy Cow app for parts of my trip. Also, it's more of an issue if you are going out to eat with people. I have no problem eating fruits and bread and hummus for a few days until I am at a location with more options, or at least a working kitchen I can use. I will eat beans when I can prepare them at home or can go to a good Latin restaurant or Chipotle.

What us, old people suppose to say to this? Young ones are spoilt, this is what I am saying. When I moved to UK over 30 years ago the only vegan food while out were french fries and small salad (salad then was lettuce, cucumber and tomato) which I ordered in twos, or a big baked potato with tinned baked beans inside it. But I survived. When I was single and dating in South Africa I would say to guys I was going on dates with that I am vegetarian (it was more than 40 years ago) and what do you know, they would invite me to a fish restaurant which didn't even have french fries. So I ate boiled potatoes and survived. Any ready made or tinned vegan food was for sale in small health shops which always smelled of incense. These were the challenging days but fun too. The joy of discovering dehydrated soy to make bolognaise!
@restfulstillness2274Ай бұрын
@@annaal7480 Sure, and it will depend on why you went vegan. I went on a plant-based diet for health, first and foremost, after a few of my family members died horribly from chronic illnesses, so my intention is not merely to survive but to thrive in terms of health and well-being. I have gotten baked potatoes from Wendy's and biscuits from KFC because there was nothing else open near highway exits when I was driving from Ohio to NY and didn't want a sad salad that could give me food poisoning. I have gone to Texas Roadhouse with someone close to me to celebrate their birthday, and all I could eat were a few lettuce leaves with onions and an olive oil and balsamic vinegar drizzle plus some salt and pepper. The other person was chowing down on steak and shrimp and butter rolls and broccoli with cheese. I have played the austerity game of endurance from time to time to adapt to circumstances, and that's a race to the bottom that does not serve me. Nowadays, I know to prioritize my nutrient intake, and to minimize situations with poor accommodations by traveling with food that I know is safe to eat without the risk of cross-contamination. Also, if people are going somewhere that does not have decent options for me, I eat beforehand, tell them I will catch up with them later, or cut them out of my life entirely because incompatible one-sided dynamics need to be extirpated anyway.

@@annaal7480 OK. So I was a vegetarian when I travelled, by land and for 4.5 months, from Poland to Turkey through Eastern Europe in 1994 (tho not Croatia nor the former Yugoslavia - ongoing wars). This story is very typical although I managed to stay veggie (as far as I knew) EXCEPT in Bulgaria where we ordered BOP (a bean dish) for 3 nights in a row cause it was the only veg thing on the menu in the Belogradchik hostel. The first 2 nights we ate it we were thrilled cause it was soooo tasty. Different waiter on the 3rd night brought the same dish with a huge, either mutton or beef baked soup bone in the middle. sigh We didn't eat the Bop on night 3. Well, we tried and it wasn't easy. Locals want the business and, at that time, had little understanding about veggie-based diets but needed tourist money and there were very few tourists back then. Otherwise we ate a lot of potato croquettes and hoped they were fried in veg oil, a lot of pickled and roast veggies incl beets, cucumbers, peppers, corn, etc., and a ton of bread and cheese :D Local markets filled the food gaps. EDIT: my pal ate eggs but I never liked them so didn't eat serious egg dishes. The eggs were, uniformly, oily and not good and she always tried them - then fed them to the stray dogs on the way back to the hostels. It was rude to leave food on the table and I frequently fed those dogs and cats the pork, mutton and beef that would show up on our plates unordered and unexpected. We'd pay (they tried, it's not their fault our local language skills were pathetic), scoop it into a plastic bag, and fed the locals. We'd then try eating at another place (if there was one) or just get another Shopska Salad and a bag of potato chips.

Only 2 of us have remained vegan, but despite the more compromising pressure that is placed on kids, they've stayed vegetarian. As children it's much harder to be invited to stay with someone who doesn't respect your dietary choices. I always offered to provide food for them under such circumstances and was usually told that they could easily be catered for. Then my children would come home with stories of being fed lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes, and being pressured and teased by the adults to give it up. My daughter has on occasions said that she respected their choices and that they should return the respect, because she was heartily fed up with people feeling they could target her and as a child she had to shut up, and put up. I think a lot more people would turn vegan and stay vegan with a supportive social environment. Maybe as vegans we should take this concept to heart rather than being critical of those who don't stay vegan.
@MusicJunkie37Ай бұрын
As a child I understand social pressure can be more tough to handle, but as an adult you are kind of weak-willed if you put more value in that than not being an animal oppressor. I lost friends going vegan which kind of sucked, but that says more about those people than me so its not a big loss.

Any grown adult who is afraid of social pressure is a coward.
@janerainbow22Ай бұрын
@@MusicJunkie37 I think the thing is we are not all the same. Being vegan is now a strong part of my identity. I place it very high up in my priorities. Being vegetarian for my kids was something they grew up with and is strongly part of their identity, despite how much they hated the social pressure. Learning to navigate that and accommodate others very much became part of their identity. I didn't put the pressure on. I let them try meat etc, and given that freedom they chose to remain vegetarian. A small exploration that they quickly rejected. For me I would love to see society become dominated by veganism. If we don't choose a plant based food system for humanity then not only are we fucked, then so is the planet. So I am willing to investigate what it means for those who find it difficult to stick to and find out how to be supportive rather than judgmental. How do we make an inclusive inviting environment for those who waiver on the edge?
@MusicJunkie37Ай бұрын
@@janerainbow22 "I let them try meat etc" I never would willingly stuff my children with corpses even if they were curious. And again you are primarily talking about children, which I said is more understandable but this is also why I aint having any kids cause I wouldnt want to be responsible for another potential animal oppressor in this world.

It’s pretty transparent what is going on. We know that being vegan is hard for one reason mainly - and that is the massive pressure to conform, normalization, feeling left out etc. And the only actually legitimate reason to excuse eating animal products to people who care marginally about animals, would be if it was neccecary for our health and wellbeing. So what ends up happening is that people who were willing to take action against animal exploitation feel continually left out, judged, excluded and punished by the rest of society for doing that, until they get so tired and alienated from their initial motivation, that they buckle under the pressure. But they can’t say that was the reason, because that would be shameful. So instead, they say «it was just too difficult for my health». Same happened to Alex Oconnor.

I almost forgot I did some production assistant for fashion sho(o)ts back in early 2000’s. We get whatever tf they wanted! They were brats and we had to bend over backwards for these models, actors or singers (if they were well known). I remember I had to run over to deliver MC’s slinky nothing dress at 8:00 pm (after a long days at work and not get overtime for that) as she was still sound asleep. When she woke up her pink champagne had to be waiting for her. The shoot didn’t begin until 12 midnight because baby girl was sound asleep. Oh and she fired some crew members (maybe hair or makeup artist I forget) on the spot and they had to start all over. We were running around like morons for one person. Just to get an idea what producers and PA’s have to go through for some of these brats and this was just a photo shoot. So this for me sounds like some bs! He was prob peer-pressured, or something, but I didn’t take that actor to be a follower, but I guess he is. Well how disappointed. Why did everyone claim he was vegan anyway!? Idc if he was veg or vegan but it’s weird how everyone makes these assumptions. We don’t need him or made up lies to make veganism significant because someone like him is flavor of the month. The honest truth is he prob missed eating de(a)d animals and for him that was enough to participate in harming animals again. Ahhh well!!!! Sorry for my long rant, it’s early! Best 🌱

Most “vegan” celebrities seem to go back on it after a while anyway, so my guess is that most of them do it as a diet or because it seems trendy.

Ik croatia is probably very different but i had a really hard time in Eastern Europe. I have had no real trouble when traveling anywhere else. I have traveled in both poland and Romania and it is hard. Romania was a tour so I was just served the vegan option in pre-planned meals. I never ate so much cabbage and white bread (like wonder bread stuff) in my life. I mean only cabbage and white bread. Poland was a little bit better because I was on my own. I was there for 3 months volunteering with the Ukrainian refugees and it was definitely challenging. I was also in a small town on the border so I'm sure that was a factor. I did go over into lviv which is a gorgeous city with lots of options. Just my 2 cents worth but I too have found Eastern Europe challenging. Their diets are very meat heavy. In Romania even one of meat eaters said to me, "do you feel like you're on atkins?" I said no I'm vegan so I'm just hungry.

I replied to Ryan at HHV as well. What does it matter if someone 'famous' falls off the vegetarian wagon? There is always a chance they will get back on in the future. As well, actors do not owe the public any explanation for their diet(s) and people change their minds regarding the partners they once loved, the things they might have said in the past, etc., all of the time. No one cares what Marlon Brando ate. Shouldn't their work stand alone? Comments are invited.

@@annaal7480 Again, tho, what does it matter if someone changes their mind? Look, I don't find it admirable, and eating animals is repulsive to me personally, yet it is overwhelmingly viewed as 'normal' in my culture and society and, indeed, in the majority of cultures and societies. Personally, I believe our time is better spent on assisting those who are 'vegan curious' with info, recommendations, resources and a dinner invitation :D Those who change their minds and 'return to the dark side' know what they're doing and have made a choice already but remember they may change their mind yet again and embrace life and love in the future.

@@annaal7480 At least Mike presented more practical solutions to travelling on a special diet; appropriate for religious restrictions, vegetarians and vegans. When I was travelling, for years at a time, I would have local people teach me phrases, words and have them write "flash cards" with my dietary choices on them. Literacy amongst locals, tho, may not be reliable. Frankly, if you are spending 2-5 months in a place it is worthwhile to try (4.5 months in Thailand, 1991, it was worthwhile most of the time) but when you are 2 to 3 weeks at a time, in a number of countries, it is more challenging. Granted, things are much easier with cell phones, language apps, and such but for real adventure travel one cannot rely on these conveniences. I suggest the classic "POINT IT: Traveller's Language Kit - The Original Picture Dictionary" travel book (very tiny) which doesn't even rely on local literacy nor electronics. It's cheap, durable, and a one-time purchase.
