That clue you gave was referring to Bobby Fischer defeating Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Tournament in Iceland (the cold island). In this game Bobby Fischer was White and Borris Spassky was black. After the game ended, Spassky joined the audience in applauding Fischer's win. This astounded Fischer, who called his opponent "a true sportsman". (There's some misinformation on google saying that Fischer was black but he played the white side of the board and Spassky played black.)

The Fide Masters are more likely to blunder sometimes, and also more likely to make an incredible comeback from a blunder or badly eroded position. They get in time trouble then need to play 30 or 40 minute bullet chess inside the classical chess. They are good enough to make GM’s sweat for their wins, to make a draw or even a win against a GM, while having to have the stamina and mental fortitude to keep playing through multiple losses themselves. Everything is less certain, everything is less predictable. It makes for such intense, exciting matches.
