Very illuminating pawn endings are the soul of chess. Thanks Jerry

“ if a square whose two corners are occupied by pawns (on the same rank) reaches the edge of the board, then one of those pawns must queen“ -Dvoretsky. He called that the floating square. I had to pull the book out to get that quote right.

Personally, I don't really find these interesting. They are way too straightforward, at least on their first move. Even if you dont calculate the second move correctly, you can always recalibrate afterwards. Best puzzles are " X to move, find the best continuation" because it makes you consider the position and you dont even know if you should be winning or trying to firce a draw or anything, just find the best move.

I don't think Lichess puzzles ever have you try to hold a draw. They algorithmically always select winning positions with a number of only moves.

I had one the other day where I was down a piece, and the solution got me to +0.5. I thought it was an anomaly, but I can see in the themes that there is a puzzle set called "equality"! It's about 1% of the puzzle database. My understanding was that these don't normally show up unless you select that category, but maybe that's incorrect.

I'm pretty sure lichess puzzles are set up such that the solution has to be a win. It doesn't generate puzzles where the goal is to draw.

Keep continue on endgame exercises. Being a beginner I must say I have a lack of knowledge of endgame chess.

My thought was always: Am I losing here? How do I go for a draw? And then I'm so proud when I find it.

At the end of that first puzzle, I think Ke5 is the most precise way to start the race, not Kxc5. That way you can continue with Qg1+ Kh7 Qh1+ and trade the queens in order to win the new king and pawn endgame while their king is in Siberia on h8.

Wrong. White will promote with check and then have the upper hand.
