In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov will teach you how to confuse your opponents in the opening stage with a confusing chess opening trick. After the standard opening moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6, most players play 3.Bb5 going for the Ruy Lopez, or 3.Bc4 going for the Italian Game. But there's a tricky alternative.
You may play 3.Nc3 which is known as the Three Knights Game and it usually leads to a calm, positional game of chess. BUT, you have something very unexpected for your opponents.
You will learn how to trick your opponents after the most common replies of Black 3...Bc5 and 3...Nf6 which leads to the Four Knights Game.

On your position at 8:30 your king is in danger. I could as black bring the queen out to check your king and then attack with knight. Then bring the bishop g4 attacking white queen 👑.

Summary of this video: Three knights game with white, if they play bc5 you take their e5 pawn with your knight, and on the next move fork their pieces with your pawn. It is very easy to attack after this in most of the games, especially against worse players. If they do 4. bxf2 to try to not fall into these attacks and expose your king in the process, on move 6 you can kick the knight out with d4 and manually castle faster than they can create an attack on you. The reason why you have so much time to castle is because after this line they have basically no development. After manually castling, you can create easy attacks on your opponent like bg5, which in variations where it is viable pins their knight to their queen . If they make it a four knights game, you can either play a normal game or try to lure them into falling into the same trap. In this example white plays be2 after black plays nf6. If they use a rare petrov's defense you can go nc3 to try to convert it into a four knights game.

AT 03:00, the move 7.Nb5 seems very strong to me. It defends the white Queen so Nf3+ by black is no longer effective and makes a nice threat on c7. 7.Be3 also look ok.

With Nb5, I think Black can push it back with a6. If white takes c7+, black goes Kd8, if night then takes the rook, then black can check with Nf3 still and take the queen.

Because the queen is hanging and the discovered check from black is a big threat... the best move will have to address that or be very forceful.. no useful checks are avaliable. Nb5 attack c7 and defends the queen making Nc3+ a knight sacrifice... black can reply in a number of ways. But moving queen again looks like loosing time and he cant protect c7 and the knight at e5 at the same time... and a6 c6 or c5 looks less useful since Nc7 is a check. (Nb5, a6, Nxc7+,Kd8, Qc7 ( white cant take rook on h8 emediately because black still have Nf3+.. so white needs to protect queen first.. but whole line is unclear because after Qc7... black can still play Nf3... if Qxf3... black can play Qxf3, gxf3, Kxc7... black is pawn down and cant castle white have double f pawns. Should be better for white. White can also take back on f3 directly with pawn... after Qc3 you get: Nf3+, gxf3, Qxc3, bxc3, Kxc7. But here white ends up with not only double pawns in f line, but also double isolated c pawns. So very unclear. Yes black can save the rook by playing king d8 emidiately... Nb5, Kd8, then the queens are still on table and black cant castle.

@@ToriYamazaki i also now discovered that c6 is much better than a6. Because it traps the knight and Qc3 dont work anymore. Nb5, c6, Nc7, Kd8... and white looses the night since he still cant take Rook on a8... bacause then he again looses the queen to Nf3+ So after Nb6, c6.. the night has to go to d6+ because its a check. Then white has to move queen back in d file i think, tho it can also go Qb4.

Just play Kg1. After the Knight moves away eventually (be careful of Qb6+ so you may have to play Be3 to force the Knight away!) then White will just continue the attack gaining at least one or two tempos on Black's misplaced Queen. Stockfish already gives +1.0 advantage after Kg1 and it's so much easier for White to play especially in blitz. White is having all the fun. Just give it a try!

Hi Eric, Playing against computer is bad idea most of the time. Even Magnus hates it. Gambits and tricks work well against human players and not so well against computers.

I was thinking instead of Bb3, at 5:43, why not BC4, this prevents the D5 or even D6 for fear of trapping the bishop. If NF6 is played, then you can even fork the Knight and Bishop with F4 followed by E5. By having your Bishop on C4, this prevents the Bishop from going to D4, with a possible check after castling.

Igor is correct. There is no attack on the white king in this position. If Black plays Qf6+, as you suggested, then simply Kg1. Then Black must retreat his Knight on e5 to say Nc6 and then white would play Nd5 getting a tempo on the Queen and threatening Nc7. This is easily winning for white. I'm sure if you load this position into Stockfish, it might find better moves, but the one's I've suggested are a very natural "human" continuation.

After white moves up his knight attacking Queen and threatening the pawn, queen moves back to home position of d8. White is stuck in a corner with a virtually disabled rook and black can long castle and start harassing white on the king side.

At the best black looses the bishop on c8... because after most defending moves white play Qxc7+ followed by Nd6+ I also now discovered that after Nb5, actually c6 looks stronger, perhaps best option for black because it saves the pawn.. after Nc7, Kd8, white can not take the rook in the corner since black plays Nf3+ and white will loose queen. And now white knight on c7 is trapped.... so after Nb5, c6, Night will have to go too d6+ since it is a check... and after Kf8 or d8(d8 looks better to me as b pawn or bishop on c8 looks like to come under fire) the white queen might have to move back in d file or to b4 to avoid the tactics with Nf3+ and at the same time keep defending the night on d6. Black looses the castle rights... is not pawn down but whits pieces looks better coordinated and attacking. Are there any better moves than Nb5?

I feel like in your presentations, u usually present the weakest, and least likely move, which doesn't show or explain the best move for your opponent.. I'm hoping you can give me a demonstration for your followers who would like to see the correct path just like I would, because I personally feel like you never take the best route for the demonstration, so I'd like to see if you're going to carry those same flaws into this game..

100% true. Sometimes I feel these videos are just made to have views. These « traps » rarely work in actual games because opponents will not play these moves, even low rated ones. You don’t learn much with videos like this. You better watch lessons where they play actual games. My favorite YT channel is Blitzstream. He’s French though (I do speak French). He’s one of the best chess teacher in YT imo.

Thats chess, oponent usualy play a different move because there are so many moves, and the move will often be worse.. but you have to find the flaw or weakness your self.. these are still great ideas for attack.. actual games will almost always deviate.
