Spassky is one of a few world champions who are mainly remembered for losing the title. It's good that his radical style that produced many brilliancies doesn't go unnoticed by everybody.

Spassky was such an underrated champ that many forgot he actually beat Fischer in several games before their match without a loss, and could produce brilliancies like the ones shown in this amazing video.

JoeTheXC ...not to mention that Fischer felt, apparently, that he had to use some psychological warfare in order to secure his victory, whereas Spassky reportedly remained a gentleman during (and after) their match. Makes you wonder whether this rather unsportsmanlike approach was due to Fischer's character, or perhaps because he felt that his (admittedly incredible) chess skill wasn't as superior to Spassky's as he wanted to present it.

Jason Doe I believe it was due to both.

JoeTheXC That's what I think, too.

Jason Doe 12.5 - 8.5 is pretty crushing, when you consider that one of Spassky’s points was from a forfeit. He was just in really good form, so I don’t think he needed to cheat to win.

That was beyond fun and interesting; one of the most well-made and enjoyable chess videos I've watched lately! And it does justice to a really under-appreciated world champion. If your top-8 choices were this awesome, I suspect there might be room even for a part-2 in the future. Well done KC!

I remember the Larson vs. Spassky game from "Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess" lol Good memories. Paul Morphy's game vs. the counts was my favorite though.

who was the opponent in the Najdorf position with the pawn in g5?

Just a question. On minute 5:12, what happens on Qf5+; g6? There's no Rxf8 then. Does it have something to do with Qf7+?

Hi KC, I really love your videos. they are very instructive. I was wondering if you could do a recap of Kasparov-Deep Blue match in 96 & the rematch in 97. I believe many chess fans will love to see it. Appreciate if you could comment, Reg.
