Nice paint job on the ceramic set. My favorite set is one I was given for Christmas about fifty years ago. It's a plastic set with tall figures. It was sold by Sears.

You have a great collection. I find lots of vintage chess sets and chess books in thrift stores every month. Seems nobody is into chess and donating them where I live. I also find old wooden boxes, jewelry boxes, music boxes, silverware cases, etc, that I repurpose to store the chess pieces. Crown Royal liquor bags for my plastic loose sets.

I just came back from South Africa and bought a set that had carved wooden animals as the chess pieces: pawns are baboons, king and queens lions, rooks are rhinos, knights donkeys and bishops storks.

Hello my name is Alfred. My father left me a set of stone chess pieces that are exactly like those first ones you talked about but no board. Do you by chance know the company name or manufacturer? I would love to purchase the matching board and keep it on display in his honor.
@nicksaint-erne Жыл бұрын
Hi Alfred. Those pieces are made of onyx stone and are hand carved in an Aztec motif. They are made in studios of Herrera Montiel in Puebla, Mexico. The set typically sells for around $150. They are fairly common in the USA from tourist bringing them home. There are often sets or boards available for sale. The pieces will break if dropped, so some sets have broken pieces or board. Look at Facebook Marketplace and search Onyx chess board and see what you find. Good luck. Those are special pieces, as yours, like mine, were from a parent.

@nicksaint-erne2 жыл бұрын
It took some time with the Aztec set, as all pieces are carved the same, only the height is different. Also, sets with smaller pieces are harder to differentiate. That is why you can't beat a good Staunton style set like the wooden set with the Fleur de Lis on the king's crown.

Most sets were $50-100, except for the smaller plastic sets that were less. The most expensive one is the Staunton set with the fleur de lis on the king, which was over $250 for the pieces and board, and the antique Sri Lanka set. The giant wooden Mexican set was $125, purchased used. The ceramic set was about $50 unpainted, but worth much more to me now that I painted it.

@@justinballard5948 It is based on Aztec motif. It is carved out of onyx stone. The set is still commonly available in Mexico, with the larger size like mine selling for about $175 now. Probably it was under $50 when my parents bought it for me in 1972 on they anniversary trip to Acapulco, or they wouldn't have bought it! Some research on the design attributes the manufacture to Herrera Montiel of Temuacan Puebla, Mexico.
