Aside from the lack of PPE and clean environment, their process is impressive. Especially the guy creating each piece. My son loves to play chess and as a graduation present, I gifted him a $300 Roman Coliseum Gladiator Pewter Glass Chess Set. It's gorgeous and a pretty heavy set (definitely not meant to be moved around) for a chess board. The glass board sits on top of what looks like ancient coliseum. The chess pieces are gladiator soldiers kneeling with shields and swords for pawns, King, Queen . A lion standing on its hind legs roaring are the rooks. It's pretty cool to look at. One day I might learn how to play lol.

These chess pieces are infamous for simply breaking when tipped over. I had a set, the only pieces that wouldn't break were the pawns, the bishops and the ones I've already fixed with epoxy.

I saw those polished marble sets on Jordan, but I was skeptical about the 350 dollar prize tag. But after seeing this I don't consider that so much for these hand made pieces. That precission torn (lathe) worker sure knows his craft. That kind of precission in the turning machinery is astounding nowadays.

Amazing memory skill for each piece. HEALTH RISKS Long term effects from mixing glue with fingers is bad. Breathing in the dust from lathe is bad. You need to wear a mask and gloves to live longer.

My dad and my brother have been machinist-millwrights for a combined 90 years, and are regarded as extremely talented. Around 1980, when the oil industry suffered a major economic slowdown, my dad and the boss' son were the only two left on the night shift, and he got into an argument with the shop foreman. He told my dad, "Y'know why I kept you around here? Because you can start on a part, eff it up, and start over and finish it before anybody else". My brother is a chip off the old block. I'm sure with a little practice, they could both churn out repetitive chess pieces like this guy.

Those poor guys inhaling all that dust. I think the stone they are machining is soapstone (aka talc) which often has asbestos in it.
