Chess Strategy: Playing on Both Flanks. Taimanov vs Geller. Zurich 1953

Mark Taimanov makes use of space advantage in a very effective way. First he opens a file on the queenside and doubles his rooks, however, Efim Geller controls all invasion squares. Therefore, using the greater mobility of his pieces, Taimanov starts an attack on the kingside, distracting the enemy pieces from the defense of the queenside, which eventually lets his rooks invade the queenside with great effect.

I've usually thought of space advantage being for vertical maneuvers (eg. lining up rook batteries and having more pieces to help on the break), but I've never considered its benefit also in transferring pieces on the wings. Recalling a few games of mine where the position was closed and the pieces were good (knight outposts etc) but lacking space, the problem I would usually encounter is just this very thing from my opponents with their pieces moving to the other side and my pieces unable to catch up. Seeing this game in action, with your wonderful commentary, this is something I can definitely be more mindful of. Thanks.
