Nepo is known for his self destruction mode. Part of it comes from his less focus on defense and putting all his energy into attacking. You will often find him devising an unforeseen attack and I think he has issues of focus in longer time controls that's why you will find him making fast moves later on the game. In the world championship matches against carlsen Ian was mostly lost due to his own mistakes.
