Really a heartbreaking feeling where you are still so bloody good but the body just can't catch up 😢 Yet he still continued to play rest of the rounds... True legend... Thank you so much for providing the extra information & putting this loss, & his intense emotions, in context. I was definitely wondering what was going on...perhaps even significant outside stress with illness in his family, a recent death, etc.. You know, I've always been a fan of Ivanchuk, & this expression of emotion causes me to like him & admire him even more because it is totally clear just how passionate he is about this great game, how much he loves it, & how important it is for him to do well & still compete at a high level. When others his age have retired or play more for fun, he still seems to give it his all & really care. I hate it when people discount older competitors in any sport/game.

Most horrifying chess video I have seen. Ivanchuk is such a legend, and honestly the guy needs a hug. Man has got nothing to prove, he will be considered among the top 10 chess players of all time. The final time scramble with Naroditsky and Ivanchuk blitzing out moves with their whole body is an image I'll not soon forget. Class act by Danya not to try to celebrate, and just calmly walk away.

Cameras are allowed here and companies like chessbase india have already gotten permission from the tournament organizers to record whatever games they want live. This includes any emotions or gestures expressed by the players. It's the entire point. I disagree with you that this makes ivanchuk look bad. If anything I have more respect for him seeing just how much he's passionate for the game.

To be fair & to make you feel better, Ivanchuk has always been EXACTLY like this (top players are on record 20 years ago saying Ivanchuk is a highly emotional player which causes him to perform badly in critical moments), so I doubt he’s crying because he’s getting too old or whatever people think - he’s a bit of an eccentric ‘romantic’ type, which is why he’s so interesting. He is known to wear his heart on his sleeve, and isn’t embarrassed by it. I think every top player has felt exactly like this when they lost, probably even Danya after he lost the rapid world championship just a few days ago after being the sole lead, it’s just that Chuck is less concerned what others are thinking.

Yes . He is almost certainly crying because of the realization that he is becoming old and that his cognitive capabilities are decreasing (an inevitable consequence of the second law of thermodynamics that will happen to all of us) and that there is no cure nor even a prevention for its worsening. Maybe for someone who lives a mentally passive life, the cognitive declines that come with age strike them as less psychologically devastating than the physical ones, but imagine those like Ivanchuck who dedicate their lives and build their entire self worth around activities where you need to think presciently and quickly; he was in a winning position here but lost because of time, and he had lost to other opponents because of the time in this tournament too. This particular game knocked him out of advancement. This is as psychologically devastating as an athlete getting a career ending injury in Father Time. The pain he feels is amplified further by the fact that he was world number 2 in his prime and that if he had the mental speed he had then he would steamroll this opponent.

Ivanchuk will forever be a legend. Immortalized for creativity and his cunning attacks over the board. He contributed a humanity and relaxed nature that was sorely needed in professional chess with his whimsy and jokes. Truly one of the most naturally gifted ever. He could retire tomorrow and still be considered among the greats. Few players with a career as long as his could still keep up with the worlds elite. I hope Chucky realizes he's cemented himself as a legend and has nothing to prove. We should all thank him for the countless inspiring & entertaining games

His country has been in a war trying to survive for few years… we don’t know what’s been happening in his life . I hope he is ok mentally and financially! Ivanchuk will always remain a supreme talent, he alread won Gold the World Blitz Championship in 2007 and World Rapid Championship in 2016. besides a lot of other olympic medals. In 2013, Gawain Jones called Ivanchuk "possibly the most talented player ever". When asked in 2012 to name chess players she considered geniuses, Judit Polgár named only Ivanchuk, Carlsen and Anand. Also class act by Danya, he handled the situation perfectly, Ivanchuk is probably one of his heros, and to see your hero in a situation like that, one might get nervous and act foolishly out of awkwardness

chucky has always had nerves and emotional problems after losing critical games, even during his youth. I used to remember the 90's manila interzonal where he thought he was going to be the interzonal champ only to be overtaken by gelfand in the tie break
