This is a preview of Chessie Sand Patch Volume 1. The full DVD is available from our website shown at the end of this preview.
DVD summary below:
The historic Sand Patch grade and Sand Patch Tunnel on the former B&O Pittsburgh division draws railfans on a regular basis.
Climbing north and west from Cumberland Maryland, the line travels 100 miles of grades and curves over the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
It is one of the steepest railroad grades in the East Coast, ascending more than 1,000 feet in elevation in about 20 miles from Hyndman, PA to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains.
Near the summit is the well known Sand patch Tunnel.
Construction on the original Sand Patch Tunnel began in 1854.
It was rebuilt in 1871 and was expanded to accommodate two tracks in 1914.
The tunnel is 4,475 feet long.
This ex-B&O line became part of the Chessie System in 1972 when the Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland railroads all came under common management.
We'll follow the Chessie's varied freight trains as they battle their way from Cumberland, MD up the east slope to the Summit and down the west slope to Rockport, PA and back in June of 1978 with Jonathan Reck and friends.
Popular locations include Cumberland, Hyndman, Sand Patch Tunnel, Keystone, Salisbury Viaduct, Yoder and Rockwood.

June 1978... I was literally just being born around this time. I also lived next to a main coal route operated by Chessie, and caught on to what it was at a very early age. I recognized to sounds of horn blasts, diesels working, and the very 1970's inspired Chessie paint job that you couldn't ignore if you tried. I even remember somehow already knowing that it was a cat inside the "C" many thought it was the Chesapeake Bay outline That's insanely high quality video for 1978

For being in 1978 this video’s quality is pretty good. I’ve done this route on train sim world 2, and I didn’t think K5LA train horn existed then. Great vid.

It's film. Movie film was/is much higher quality than video tape. Hence how we now have 4K scans of movies made 60+ years ago.

Fantastic Video! I've taken my kids to Sand Patch a few times and we walked down a little trail that takes you on top of the tunnel arch to get another good view of trains and then we went down to the tower and we met Ed who worked in that switch tower so long that he said he forgot when he started working there and then he gave us a tour of the tower showed us the CTC board and how everything works in there. It was a wonderful memory for us. I believe that I still have a photograph of Ed.

1:10 The original Sand Patch tunnel was abandoned with the 1914 opening of the current tunnel. The 1871 tunnel had ventilation and cave-in issues. The portal stones with the tunnel marker are now part of a house's foundation above the current tunnel on PA Rt. 160.
