70s is definitely one of the most vastly interesting decades for railroading; EMD GP38-2s and GP40s, GP9s and GP7s, F units and Alcos, not to mention the bonus of seeing cabooses still getting some good use, wish there was that kind of diversity in motive power today

No kidding. The looks of trains has gone the same way as automobiles. Cookie cutter boredom for the most part. I have a new appreciation for branch service (if you can still find any). It's the only place you're likely to see older motive power.

Even 15 years ago there was still quite a bit of variety... still quite a bit of older power running and it seemed like you never knew what you'd get. Not on the same level as the '70s, but still. Today I'm just happy when I catch anything that's not a GEVO

Thank you for preserving this look back. I was a trainman - conductor with B&O Chessie CSX 1978 to 2019. Brings back lots of memories. A couple of those WM f units showed up in Philadelphia right after I hired. The 4200s were brand new in 1975 I believe. I remember the 4300s and 4400s when the paint was still wet on them. They had the Chessie Cat image ingrained into the green seats. The 4100s started showing up in the yard. Everybody hated switching with them account they took forever to make forward- reverse transition.

Amazed at the number of trains with 4 - 5 - 6 and more units on the head end under power. Today for most trains it is 2 and very occasionally 3 pulling.

Outstanding video!!! My favorite part is at the 22:00 point. The train has so many cars from fallen flags: Western Maryland (obviously), New York Central, Pennsylvania, Penn Central, Chessie System, C & O , and Norfolk & Western

Back in the early 70s, Bachmann train sets featured Chessie System F7s in HO scale. I don't think any prototype F units ever got the yellow, vermillion and navy blue paint. Would have been nice had Chessie System done so. I imagine the Fs, by that time, were too worn out to keep around and invest in.

I was born in ‘76. My mother owned a restaurant in Logan, WV in the early to late ‘80s. It was located right by the crossing in Logan and I was fascinated by trains anyway. Had an ho scale train when I was little too, anyway, I can remember watching every time a train would go by, I would have my face plastered to the glass. I remember the high hood GP9s with the bell on the front going by, and the cabooses. It seemed to me that the Chessie paint jobs where the best looking schemes ever and I still believe that. But for some reason, I believe when I was 4, I seem to remember a F unit. Did B&O and C&O use F units that late or am I remembering a dream or something? Well I just seen some F units in the video, and that was in ‘75. I guess it’s possible. I wish I could go back to 1980-82. Life seemed so much better then. Love the clip of Harpers Ferry. I don’t know if anyone reading this is familiar with Logan. But at one time, Whitman Creek had railroad tracks and when I was a boy, there was an old load out that was at least 4 tracks wide. They had parked over the years there, old box cars, old flat cars, etc. We had heard that they where going to pull those cars out of there one day, and that was a big deal because the short line was no longer in use. Never seen an engine that far up Whitman before so that was a big deal for me. I begged dad to let me stay home from school so we could watch them pull those cars out. But he wouldn’t let me ditch and they were all gone when I got home from school. I still remember that. They pulled up the track about 5 or 6 years later after that. It broke my heart to see that. I would walk them rusty old tracks every chance I got and to see them gone hurt me. I guess that’s why old unused tracks always catches my eye. Don’t mean to go on and on but trains and women don’t vibe.

The C&O dumped their F units around 1970 or so. The B&O dumped theirs in 1974. 4400 and 4500 class. The last WM Funits to run were 7163,7173 which I saw and chased on a freight August 30,1979 from DC north a few miles. The 2 ran a special out of Baltimore where 1 of them had a traction motor failure. Note,,,chessie had an old C&O B unit they called the "prime mover mover". This B unit was used by chessie to move 567 or 645 engines from/to various shops. Basically, it was a moving platform. I saw the prime mover mover once many years ago. Sorry to say that you missed the good old days. The recession of 1979-1982 doomed the few remaining F units in the country. The WM had the last remaining intact F unit fleet in the country. Chessie began retiring WM F units in 1976, by Oct.. 1979 they were gone.

I must have dreamed it then, I had a vivid imagination when I was a child. I’m just glad I did get to see the dark blue GP9s of B&O and C&O. I thought those were cool. And the cabooses, I did get to see cabooses on the end of trains before the flashing red lights on the end became the norm. I got to see engineers using flares at night to stop traffic at crossings without lights. I don’t think there’s a crossing around my way today that are in use without eluminated crossing signals. I did miss a lot but I guess I’m glad to see what I did see. The way the coal industry is going today, the trains that we do see in my area will be gone before long also.

It never made sense to me that B&O used GP-40s so much, especially hauling coal. Seems to me SD40s would have been more than worth the extra cost given the many heavy grades and tonnage.

some of the old WM in west va is still operated. this film was in the central part where virtually all of it is now a cinder path. back in the old days, it was ALWAYS a treat to see WM power. the shots here were taken just before most WM locos were renumbered and then they were scattered to the Chessie wind. in fact I could have seen the last revenue run of WM F7s. back in 1979 when the NRHS had their baltimore last run of the WM Fs, I saw those 2 Fs on a coal train heading north from DC to baltimore just before the last run. chased and photoed them some.
