It doesn't really make sense though. You can't capture when checked if the capture doesn't remove the check, so the challenge should not have applied in that position. Must be a bug EDIT: Oh nevermind I read the rules and apparently capturing the king is how you win on this site, regardless of drawback
@tamatebako_yt3 ай бұрын
Can someone explain to me why this is a thing? It's not like you can stay in check and do something else, you will lose on the very next turn. So what's the point of this rule change?
@RuptimusPrime3 ай бұрын
@@tamatebako_yt The point is, apparently, to address positions where the opponent's drawback doesn't allow them to capture your king. I had this happen to me - the opponent had a drawback where his pieces can't move to the rim. So, I got "checkmated" with my king on the back rank, but... he couldn't capture my king. So I realized he's got some drawback that stops him from winning, and figured if I just don't move my king, he can't win. It worked and I ended up winning, even though my drawback was considered "harder" by the developers and I played worse - because he had no option to win. It's... kinda dumb, really.
@vikenemesh3 ай бұрын
@@RuptimusPrime Your King was basically invincible, how does your opponent even get out of this one alive? Nevermind: I realized that jailing the king to a square on the rim and then taking every other material on the board could force the king to move off the rim, because its the only valid move left. Good luck figuring that one out and being in the position to perform it though.

I was wondering how check/checkmate could work the whole time. For example, if the opponent captured something with his king, then he can't really be in check no matter what, because you're not allowed to move to that square. At the same time, the opponent should have no way of knowing that. Their solution, to allow you to ignore apparent checks because you might not be in check, is definitely correct. That way if you think you're not really in check, then you can ignore it. It doesn't give away the opponent's challenge, and also doesn't infringe on your own choices. Good developers.
@mauer13 ай бұрын
its definitly the easiest. although the system definitly knows and could streamline checkmates anyway. we had a talk about that on the discord just today.

Yeah, there are some drawbacks that make it impossible to win. "You cannot capture a piece that has just moved" for example (kings count as pieces). If the opponent keeps moving the king then you can never win. Once you have "missed" some opportunities to take the opponent knows what's going on, they can just run their king to your king and capture it and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
@asdfqwerty145873 ай бұрын
@@whocares2277 To be fair, all of that is assuming that the opponent's own challenge isn't doing something to get in their way too.. which is very rarely the case (I mean, if the opponent weren't struggling with their own challenge then it's kind of obvious that the person who has a difficult challenge is going to lose to the person that isn't dealing with a challenge...).

@a.y.1023 ай бұрын
I guess the basic rule is to take the king, because there may be drawbacks that prevent taking the king in certain cases. And so in those cases, would that really be checkmate? Therefore, assuming taking the king as default (just like the Fog of War variant) does make sense.
@versuzzero53353 ай бұрын
Apparently, they call this bugged concept, a "feature". There is no check/checkmate in this game, just capture the king. I think they got tired of coding it. It's a bugged game to begin with. At least as a human, simp can "modify" the rules to make it barely possible to win. This game is just impossible for the opponent.
@Modie3 ай бұрын
@@versuzzero5335 No, it's because it makes the most amount of sense with the way the variant works. As someone already pointed out, there are drawbacks that wouldn't let you take the king, therefore, check isn't as problematic as it is normally in a game. Secondly, with the drawbacks being present, it means there are new outcomes for a game that you have to account for. Stalemate for example is farily easy in normal chess. It's stalemate if you don't have any legal moves. However, now there is an additional drawback that restricts your moves. A drawback that might result in you not being able to move anything. However, since the opponent doesn't know your drawback it would be really bad to punish them for creating such a situation. Lastly, if you really think they are too bad at coding, why do you think they would include their new ways of winning the game through castling? Castling is allowed even when in check, moving through check or moving into check. However, they actually coded it so that you can land on the square where the rook is after castling, where the king is after castling or the square the king was traveling through while castling and they ALL result in you "taking the king". But yeah, they are just too bad at coding.

Drawback chess is great! I had one the other day where my challenge was that I couldn't move a piece backwards. So I ended up in a position where I had two rooks on the 7th rank and three blocked pawns and my opponent had one rook, three blocked pawns and a passed pawn (that was beyond both my rooks and my king). I ended up making a perpetual because it was impossible to create mating threats and I was scared about the passed pawn that I couldn't take. After the draw I saw his drawback ... he couldn't move anything to his 6th rank. I spent all that time worrying about a passed pawn that couldn't move any further.

Not getting out of the check is an illegal move, therefore the opponent wasn't able to capture, he shouldn't have lost. Coding this website must be a bug-filled nightmare. His challenge actually countered yours, because you have to play assuming that your opponent won't make unfavorable trades, as you can't recapture, but your opponent unknowingly will make them because he's forced to. You won because you played well and were lucky that that situation never happened. In your videos this is known as "but who plays like that anyway?"
