I personally think Nelson should switch to 15 minutes with 10 seconds added rapid games. This would give him all the time he needs to explain what he's doing without him ever running into time pressure. Plus, we'd get to see his opponents playing better too. I hope he does that.

Really good description of thought processes. Nearly 180 games before a proper loss is phenomenal. While explaining and while not feeling well. Even so when the loss came (although not playing to your usual standard) was taken with great humour. Keep doing the climb I love it! Your calmness, generousity of spirit to others, and informative content is very entertaining and life affirming. Who would have guessed of all things on you tube I'd get hooked on your chess videos. Hi, Nelson. I love the content. I was wondering if you'd consider switching to 15 minute games with 10 added seconds for this series? This would give you plenty of time to explain your thought process without running into time pressure, and we'd get to see most opponents play better as well. The only disadvantage I see is that each game could take quite a bit longer.

He's confident about his timing in the second game because he knows he's got pre-move set up for the ending. Without pre-move, no way he could have gotten all those moves in. Notice how he still made sure to take all his opponents' pawns first, ensuring at least a draw.

Little did Skylark70 know that he would beat an NM on this day. I think its actually more encouraging for beginners like me, a bit like watching a white belt catch a purple belt in BJJ. With a limited amount of knowledge and basically lucky timing you can be truly formidable.

At 50:55 getting rid of the knight on f5 is winning I think is because black can't take with the g pawn or Qh5 leads to mate and exf5 is met by e6 trapping the bishop and after Qe7 and Qe2 I think the bishop is gone.

@39:50 - you didn't even acknowledge Rc8 as you were really focused on your attacking ideas. I generally follow the game as a blind chess kibitzer and flipped over to see it when you skipped his move in your commentary but didn't really see the idea behind it either. Still, I think it's a learning moment to look at every move's ideas before proceeding with your own tactics. Seeing that the knight had no good moves, you have to start thinking about sacrifices. I missed it the whole time, too. It's not natural to think about your back rank being under attack in a closed position.

While you are a beginner, don't try fancy stuff, no gambits. Play the London system for white, you could play a similar London game for black if you wanted , or just play cautious. Just try for a few games not attacking until you are fully developed. Protect all of your pieces, over protect them even Fight for the centre. Be cautious moving pawns forward. Then wait for your opponent to make mistakes, and make blunders, you will win a lot more games. Learn about tempo's , bad bishops, don't exchange your bishops for knight (on a locked up pawns games knights are better). Don't attack with the queen as a rule in opening and early middle games, same with rooks, you will get chased around and lose tempo (a move gained or lost). Get your rooks the on open/half open files, or look to get them on when the appear, at least get them connected up in the back rank and towards the d and e files preferably. Use your king as piece iin the endgame, it good at eating up pawns and helps promote pawns, if in doubt get the king in the centre in an end game ready to pounce one way to eat pawns and promote your pawns. You will become solid.

I'm very grateful for the explanations. I do learn, but I do also feel the stress when you stop, sit there pretty locked onto a move and spending alot of minutes on it. then end up in the endgame with super Stress premove ultrabullet. Iguess you know where to use your time to make the right moves and where you don't need time as your instinct is just top level. I did not see the Brilliant move there with the queen, I was too afraid on losing the rook that I would made a mistake trying to save it. Why was Queen to C1 in the endgame a blunder? around 17min. It seemed logical for me too

@mythbusters866 It's also interesting to see the missed tactic of Rook A5 for black, as white cannot take the queen (immediatly M2). Rook cannot take Rook on A5 either cause of the Qd1 Checkmate. tricky position to be playing moves in sub 3 seconds, I think nelson would have found these tactics from both sides if he had like 4-5minutes on the clock

Earlier Nelson talked about H3 being a very slow move, but not doing it does open for some nasty tactics like these later in the game, no problem for the pros. but me as a 7-800 scrub will blunder checkmate or worse if I don't do that move

Ok so here’s the thing.. we cannot play in the same way you play with time management, because you can go all out blitz at the last second and someone like me (600 rating) cant lol However, doing 10 | 15 min games on rapid have been very nice for me. I typically lose to time when I play a 10 min rapid game

Hes absolutely right of course. He explains as much or more than anyone ive been able to find. Maybe Narodisky is up there close enough. and Hikaru has to be just about the worst lol (although i gather teaching isnt what his viewers expect from him). I like him but i cant get nearly as much for my time watching him bulldoze people and the closest he comes to informing about the decisions is highlighting shapes. He is funny somehow too though. For actual chess experts this level of thought-process/ decision- making narration may not be worthwhile for all i know. Sort of the opposite of Hikaru. But what do i know. Either way hes always teaching in detail, and he has to have some slim bit of advantage for himself, in sort of exersizing his time constraint muscles to boot.

In that last game in the crucial position in the end, instead of taking the pawn with the rook I think you should've taken it with the knight. As far as I can see it only leaves the opponent with bishop g7 as a response to avoid losing the rook for free on the next move. It allows your rook to keep control of the h file to stop the opponents queen from moving in and you can swing your own queen in to g4 to pile on the pressure. At that point I don't really see anything black can do to stop the position from crumbling. All blacks pieces are locked up and not doing much but smothering the king while you can start picking the kingside apart. Correct me if I missed some counter play here, but as you didn't mention this line in the video I thought I'd bring it up in the comments

You're a FAR better player than I am, but it was really BOTHERING me that you were playing those adventurous games on the K-side, WITHOUT completing your development. It's not like he was going to change the basic setup re the pawn structure, etc. And the undeveloped knight and bishop on the Q-side were part of the power of that Knight shot at the pawn. It's probably fitting that if you were going to lose, doing so because of ignoring the fundamentals to go treasure hunting (as a giant horde of your students do in their games) is an object lesson on why the fundamentals need to be followed unless there is an obvious exception RIGHT NOW.
