Chesterton's Fence is a principle that says change should not be made until the reasoning behind the current state of affairs is understood.
@BaseReality4 ай бұрын
Yeah. But there's a problem in that Chesterton was being dick. The 'fence' he was talking about was middle class women having jobs. He thought that they didn't know the harm they would be doing to society, and that he, a devout catholic, knew better than them how they should live their lives. Other than that it's a great saying, but you've got to watch out for people using it from a false position of authority.
@lucyferos2054 ай бұрын
Usually the current state of affairs isn't the result of reasoning but an accumulation of psychosocial factors and individual action through the butterfly effect
@Digganob5904 ай бұрын
@@lucyferos205Those, too, are a kind of reasoning. Tradition is the democratic vote of the dead, as unorganized as it is. Conservatism is now an attempt to bring the current state of affairs back to where it had been for most of history. Centrism would be an attempt to keep it from changing any more very much (damn apathetic centrists), and progressivism would be an attempt to bring it to where it's never been, as quickly as possible.

I think if society as a whole can't find any reason for why a fence might be up, then it should cautiously be taken down. In the absence of evidence, the assumption among rational people is to assume the unsupported idea isn't true. In this case, the fence is protecting against this unsupported idea.
@sniedendepoes4 ай бұрын
@@godlyvex5543 I personally belief humans to be inadequate to rationally deduce what tradition or institute is useful. We simply don’t have all the variables. chesterton's fence basically says that you should understand why a law was passed or a thing constructed (like a fence) before uprooting it. the far right and far left trying to uproot the fence is a metaphor for uprooting the law and government currently in place and run by centrists to enact their own laws, or build their own fence. god rewarding them for uprooting it is just a subversion of expectations, as we are lead to believe by context and by the centrists that something bad will happen should the fence fall.

Chesterton's fence is a parable about social norms or laws. The fence represents these social norms or laws. Chesterton says you should make sure you know what that "fence" is for before just removing it because it might be important. For example, Chesterton was a devote Catholic so he would probably argue becoming a secular society is bad for this that or whatever reason. Chesterton would want the "fence" of religion being a core aspect of society to stand. The far left and the far-right people in the video are trying to remove the fence because they just want to change things either way. At the end they end up being right. Jreg is probably saying most of the social norms were arbitrarily created or created for bad reasons. But that part was probably just to subvert expectations. Joke explained lol

Chesterton's fence: We should try to figure out why the traditions/laws/institutions we have exist in the first place before changing them. What everyone thinks Chesterton's fence is: You're literally never allowed to change traditions/laws/institutions, and yes I'm going to ignore everything Chesterton said to the contrary and all the examples of things he wanted to change about his society.
@abababababa84 ай бұрын
How are you supposed to know when you have a deep enough understanding of any particular fence to remove it? Chesterton's take on tradition is nuanced, but defenders of the Status Quo can abuse his fence easily. Just deny that anyone with a different idea for society has sufficient info to justify it.
@thejollyviking80834 ай бұрын
@@abababababa8 I mean, I have no idea why a practical principle meant to caution people against removing things without ever having thought about why they're there in the first place got replaced with "you must have total epistemic knowledge before you're ever allowed to change something" in the comments of this video. My best guess is that you all have encountered a great number of people who have used Chesterton's fence in this way? I definitely haven't but I guess I don't have total epistemic knowledge of political discussion so I'm not going to make any absolute statements here (wink) But seriously, if you encounter said person I would simply counter with quotes or even a discussion from Chesterton himself which demonstrate that this is a misuse of his principle. In the meantime, I feel like the assumption of these comments (not specifically yours, to be clear, but just what I see throughout the comments of this video and what's implied by the video itself) is that the only danger is preventing changes to the status quo, when the reason the analogy exists in the first place and was adopted by people is because of the fact that, in our current context at least, there's a huge danger of people changing institutions when they really should have been left in place. (I'm reminded of Chesterton's point in Orthodoxy about how it is a glorious thing to attack the police, but it would be ridiculous to attack the police as someone who's never heard of burglars)

First of all, ironic that Chesterton's Fence of all things is one of the only videos that God has appeared in. But o be honest, Chesterton seems like a writer who really does fall in line with the JREG ""ideal"", if you will. Like, compare JREG's videos on community and appreciation of that which goes underappreciated by others with the famous "do it again" quote. “Because children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, "Do it again"; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony. But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, "Do it again" to the sun; and every evening, "Do it again" to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we.”

It makes fun of Centrist not understanding what Chesterton's fence is by defending the fence but not actually understanding why the fence is planted which the Chesterton fence is about. Knowing if institution and Traditions is worth keeping is something most moderates are unwilling to do, While the more Radical side would not also try to understand it but they are the only ones willing to uproot the fence, either to their detriment or to their betterment. The God bit is due to Chesterton being a Catholic and one of the main writers for Distributism.

For the Far right and the Far left they also do not understood why the fence is there but because they are the only ones willing to uproot it, means they would be ultimately the only ones who would understood why the fence is there for better or worse.
