Amazing that a verbal proposal was considered legally binding back in the day. Quite ridiculous when you think about it.

Verbal contracts are still valid and legal today. In terms of marriage, for some reason that seems acceptable to breach today. As for being quite ridiculous it was not. Society’s standards were different obviously. Many families financial entanglements were affected if breached. Women were seen as property and therefore a transactional part of a bigger deal. Women found it difficult to back out because a man may rely on the woman’s dowry. Men would find it difficult to back out because it would affect the woman’s honour and reputation which could finish any chances of marriage if ruined. So, not ridiculous at all. I would also submit that it shouldn’t be ridiculous now, especially if payment for some wedding services were made and the wedding was cancelled because of one party.

Not all ridiculous. At a time when many women were dependent on a man to provide for them, a loss of her reputation could mean destitution.
