Chet Atkins plays this song with the Russian fire that to which it belongs. I think that he knows that it's a love song, and plays it lovingly.

I remember where I first heard this rendition. At the Airman's Club in Wichita AFB in Texas. It was a scratchy old record but I listened to it many times. That was 1967 or 1968. Loved it then and I love it now. I never tried to play it as my skills were/are limited.

I like this guitarist because he does not show off like many new guitarists who play this kind of music. He has his signature.
Could listen to Chet Atkins all day and most of the night. Talk about smooth. He has a sound all his own.

Chet uses most his tricks in this arrangement, but not all. He doesn't play two songs at the same time (which he can) and he doesn't play the theme melody and bridge at the same time (which he can). He does sweeping riffs, harmonics, etc., but the guy just did it all, yet was never satisfied, and kept playing, and learning, and sharing his skills until the day he died in 2001. R.I.P. MR. GUITAR

Those triplet runs over the chords are pretty crazy. Classic Chet. He’s got stellar right-hand technique, but the left-hand double-stops and scale runs probably came from Les Paul.

Chet Atkins and Les Paul - the forever unbeaten combination - greater guitar players cannot be found anywhere. Hopefully they sit "up there" playing their guitars, playing little tricks on eachother, having a grand time, while we "down here" can only regret that they play here any more.

Guys....really....comparing Django and Chet? Two very different players and both masters in their own field(s). Dissing any of the two is just plain foolish. To honour one doesn't call for putting down the other. Wise up, it's music, not sports.

You're not wrong!
@Vito_Tuxedo Жыл бұрын
@Stinky Bojangles - Well, since you haven't defined what you mean by "greatest", I can't take issue with any of the guitarists you've listed. And even if what you really mean is "the guitarists that I like the most", I still can't take issue with it, because that's purely subjective. And to be fair, you did stipulate that it's your opinion. But what's utterly baffling to me is that Tommy Emmanuel is NOT on your list...well, unless the reason he's not there is that you've never heard of him. That wouldn't surprise me; I suppose most people haven't. But consider this; Tommy is the guitarist for whom Chet Atkins created the CGP (Certified Guitar Player) title, and he is its first recipient. Most of Tommy's work these days is acoustic, but if you want to hear him shred, check out his early work - tunes like _Who Dares Wins_ and _The Journey,_ both of which can be found on KZbin. When you consider the phenomenal range of styles and genres Tommy's *_decades_* of work comprises, it kinda doesn't matter how you define "greatest". However you define it, Tommy embodies it. Check him out, and see if you agree.

@kencc4791 Paco De Lucia is something else but I think Paco Pena is great to. Chet was a very versatile player that had many styles. Chet aside being the great one in his time praised some of the newer crop of guitarists eg. Scotty Anderson, Brent Mason, George Benson. Chet was a sleeper he could pull off amazing skills out of nowhere. Comparing loses music sense. Its like saying my dad is bigger than your dad. Myself I love Flamenco but to a point then I need to hear another style of music.

Speed is a ridiculous criteria, only Kids without creative abilities would ever think speed is the ultimate (whatever). Check out the difference between Joe Venuti and Stephane Graphelli, or Claude Black and Stuff Smith. It is all in the creative remaking of new sounds with melodies once reduced to a score. Example, Gypsy Dance 5 played classically can get my blood boiling as easily as when it is remade using Jazz improvisation.
