You can hear the concentrated skill and determination he had to play his very best anywhere he was at any time. The descending chromatic runs you hear in this warn up are astonishingly even and pure. Do you know how difficult that is to achieve with a valved instrument as opposed to a keys (woodwinds) or stringed instrument? Also, he knew much more about scales and arpeggios and patterns and other traditional exercises than many believed.
