Chettiars: The History of A People by MV Subbiah of Murugappa Group

Eminent industrialist and the former Executive Chairman, Murugappa Group, MV Subbiah was the consummate host during our visit to Chettinad. Besides giving us a private tour of his stunning mansion, he also treated us to a very personalised history of his community, the Nagarathar or Nattukkottai Chettiars. This informal edition of Sarmaya Talks was held at The Bangala, Karaikudi for a small audience of our Art of Travel guests. He was in conversation with Sarmaya founder, Paul Abraham.

The contribution of nagarathars to education in Tamiladu cannot be under estimated as they started free schools 120 years back and even today there is one school in each and every chettinad village
