I would say 'active shutter performance' dtc. P059F searching around, it seems the shutters aren't getting into the correct position and it throws a code. You have to take the entire fascia off of it to change it out. I miss working on my 71 Chevelle at these times. You could get at everything easily. Except the heater core....

GM has been using this louver system since 2010 and have been adding them to various models over the past 13 years. I haven’t heard of issues with these in the 13 year period it’s been used, so everyone panicking about it failing can rest easy. Other manufacturers use a similar technology as well. I’ve owned two GM vehicles with these louver systems and they never caused an issue. Love your videos, Dave!

Dave that was very interesting. Never knew shuttles were even in front of a radiator let alone responsive like you’ve shown . Wow interesting.

I have a 2018 equinox and I notice the shutters close a lot more when it’s cold out like below 45 degrees. They close more when going around 50mph or higher and I notice a slight difference in the sound of the engine (feels like the engine has enough torque to keep going without needing to give it more gas)

Yeah typically the grille shutters will close until the engine warms up and then open as more airflow is needed.

Dave, as always great video… but I forecast an Active Shutter System recall in less than 2 years… it’s just one more thing to go wrong. Radiators want fresh air.
@snivesz32
@snivesz32 7 ай бұрын
AFAIK, the active radiator shutters make the front of the grill more aerodynamic and can save as much as 2% on your highway MPG. They also help the engine get up to operating temp quicker, and open at 203F or when the engine demands more cooling. They close at highway speeds to obtain efficiency, yet will open if there is more demand such as AC on or vehicle speed is low. The computer has a matrix of conditions based on ambient temperature, radiator temperature, AC status, and vehicle speed to drive the appropriate state of the shutters. Personally I like this feature because it allows the engine to heat up quicker in the winter. Oil that is at operating temperature also lubricates the top end better and has less parasitic losses.

My front shutter in my 2015 Chevy Spark EV went bad soon after I bought it last fall. That, or the dealer cleared the code before I bought it. Anyway, the part has been on backorder for about a year now.

I had a VW Euro an in the early 90's that had a similar louver system on it's radiator. It's function was to help the engine to warm up in winter. It was actuated by a solenoid.

I wouldn't let it stop me just like I bought a second Bolt even though there was a "fire risk" on the battery at the time. In my experience it is very few trucks. I only know of two of my clients that had the problem and they were both Tahoes. Or you can always go with the 2.7L Turbo.

The radiator shutters are not speed actuated but temperature. Now use of AC will tax the radiator more and causes somewhat different scenario on when the shutters are open/closed. The objective is to tax the engine cooling system less thus extending the life of the system.

they also have them on the bolt euv , they are outside air temperature controlled .They open at a certain outdoor temp and close during cold weather. There was a tsb on a noise issue coming from the front of the car during cold weather above 45mph , the air was doing something it was not supposed to. The fix was nothing more than some foam insulation and black duct tape.
@DaveBsellsChevy

@jgroves55
@jgroves55 Жыл бұрын
@@DaveBsellsChevy yes it was an issue with some of us cold weather drivers the noise was like a humming sound and was on the 2022 euvs . I had to tell my local dealer about the tsb and they had the same issue with other customers who reported the noise. I'm not sure what temperature the shutters open but when it did the noise went away . Only other nagging issue with some of the bolt euv is the wind noise from drivers side window. The window seal is not tight against the window and at highway speeds sounds like you have window open just a little. There is a fix for that issue as well. Since my car was sitting for quit some time waiting for battery replacement that may have something to do with the window seal. But great car, fun to drive if you can find one!

when I first started working on big trucks many years ago they all had shudders. That went away in the 80s. The mechanic I follow on youtube has replaced many sets of those on late model Chevy Pickups due to failure. GM needs to do much better on that. I'm sure engine temp, speed and load all play a part in the calculation to control them.
