I care about cell issue and I want to know problem root cause in excruciating detail. GM should treat all owners identically regardless of state lemon laws, but GM currently denies buybacks based on state law. GM spent too much time developing a failed software fix and Bolt EV owners face property damage and maybe death - GM’s response is far from good.

Thanks! The ID.4 is a great option, too. It's too bad VW didn't bring the ID.3 to North America. I think that the 2020+ Bolt EVs are a great option with a number of improvements (not to mention the safer battery), so I'd suggest keeping an eye out for one of them when they come off lease.

Thanks for covering this Eric! I definitely appreciate the shakedown as well and the testimony about running the car while charging which I do a lot too. Definitely going to continue to wait to update considering that it doesn’t prevent fires and offers new bugs and regressions. At this point I want a new battery or buy back. I have zero confidence in future software that they might release doing anything that would prevent a fire. The story released yesterday on electrek of the fire victim that they refused any compensation on is reprehensible as well. They need to cover all these vehicles with a comprehensive replacement or buyback.

My worry is, does getting a Michigan built pack truly guarantee the identified defect is not there? I mean for 2019 model year, the packs made in Michigan have the same cells, same chemistry, same battery pan as the ones built in South Korea, both made by LG: the only difference is where they were put together. I'd like to know a little more about what GM found and what lead them to the conclusion that the Michigan packs are fine and the problem only existed if the packs were put together in SK.

After cruising through the forums, it seems that people are most upset that Chevy has not been transparent on this issue. Nobody knows what's going on in the investigation. I think Chevy could allay a lot of fears if they would issue periodic statements of where they are in the investigation. Thanks for this Eric. We miss your regular presence over at the Bolt forum, but your presence is still there with links to your videos, including this one. Having applied the update a month ago, I have yet to DC charge. I wasn't aware of the gimps they built in with the update, so will be sure to keep a closer watch on my next trip. And totally agree with your balanced assessment, a lot of us want to place blame. But how they handled this was important to the long term health of the strategic partnership with LG. In the end, placing blame looks like finger pointing, and all owners really want are resolution and assurances of safety. Owners placing blame is inevitable given the lack of disclosure. At this point, several additional steps are becoming apparent. If the SW detection is inadequate, battery swaps and buybacks will likely accelerate. Hopefully, the two recent fires will give them further insight into the problem and ways to better isolate the conditions that may indicate a pack is vulnerable. Along with this, the gimps in the DCFC, while relatively minor inconveniences (except for stopping mid session), need attention. I hope that was not intentional and supported by NHTSA. What seems likely is that due to the higher concentration of issues with 2019 model year Bolts, those of us with 2017-2018 Bolts may have less to worry about. But nothing GM has said publicly confirms this. That would seem to be an area for improvement in their communications if there is any validity. Adding to this, if the current SW update provides them with more diagnostics, and these sacrificial lambs (two recent fires) lead to a better understanding and more proactive solutions, a wholesale turnover of packs may not be necessary. Without more details, even 2020+ owners are a bit nervous. Very detailed communications would be required to put owners at ease. The blanket statement of don't charge unattended and move to a safe location after charging sends a mixed message, one they will hopefully address quickly (rumored within the week according to some reports).

Hi Eric, I have a 2017 Bolt EV Premier that I can only charge between 11pm-7am in my garage (my meter is off at all other times). I called on Monday and explained my situation, and the EV concierge offered to put me in for a buyback without me asking. I have 137K miles, so I'm not sure how it's going to work out. There seems to be only one Bolt EV tech in the Twin Cities area, and I have the second part of the recall scheduled for early August (that's the soonest they had the tech and could get me a car to use - they are requesting to have my car the full day). The EV concierge was surprisingly helpful. I think in the end GM either needs to replace/fix the physical batteries or buy back the cars. I drive 3500 miles/month and having reduced range isn't viable for me, especially during Minnesota winter. I still like my Bolt EV, but it needs to operate in a that doesn't endanger my family.

08/18 Build, I've been so busy with work and life, that so long as my car works and hasn't caught fire, I'm beyond the point of caring much. For GM to offer me approximately two thousand dollars less than kbb dealer trade value, for their buyback offer, was a slap in the face. For them to proceed with a fix that didn't work for another automaker in a very similar boat, seems borderline unconscionable. I don't see myself ever buying another GM product, if there are very similar market alternatives (which didn't exist with the Bolt @ similiar price point, which probably won't be the case the next time around).

@@newscoulomb3705 Pretty sure they installed the update since the car does some other things it didn't do before the update. For example I often leave the car when parking with the air conditioner running so I don't come back to a hot car (anything under one hour). Since the update when I get out of the car the horn always beeps twice. Never did that before. Also I was driving about 5 mph the other day and I opened the driver door to firmly close it (I had only partially closed it) and the car tried to throw itself into park and gave me a chastising message on the dash telling me not to do that. Never did that before. Granted I did get the update installed at a dealer in Jefferson City, Missouri (having just moved here from Southern California). I searched high and low for a dealer in this state that knew how to do the update. They have 3 certified Bolt technicians there and said they had done several updates on Bolts. They claimed they were proficient at the process beforehand and assured me they did the software upgrade after evaluating the battery, which they found no issues with. In their effort to save money (admittedly a lot of money) they have done an enormous amount of damage to their reputation for making EVs. At least in the beginning how would they know what the possible fix could be if they didn't even know what the flaw was? Especially the early fires seem to be related to charging at high battery level. Obviously that is not the case. But it also seems that it's a very narrow range of vehicles that had a physical defect. There's always going to be some defects in all cars. I'm sure there's going to be a 2017 that will catch fire eventually just like there have been some tests that catch fire randomly and just like there are some gasoline powered cars that catch fire due to some manufacturing defect or damage after the fact. I do agree with you though they have not handled the PR very well. And at this point I agree with you I think they are damaging their reputation. Especially as the brand new bolt EV just came out even though the battery pack is completely unrelated to the problem ones your average consumer is not going to even trust that or believe it. The positive for this could be prices for older bolt EVS could end up being very low. So if you wanted to pick up an electric vehicle you might be able to grab a 2017 which has a very low probability of ever having a problem or a 2019 or 2020 for a significantly discounted price because it has a tarnished reputation at this point.

As someone who's squarely in the risk group... not happy. At this point if the numbers are to be trusted, the 2019 is on the order of 10x (20x?) more likely to catch fire than any other vehicle, or at least ICE. I'm not completely sure what to do as I like my cars small and nothing else really does it for me. I took a '22 out for a ride today and that's an option, but there's supposed to be something Friday that might be "game changing". If my 2019 could be made safe, fine, as long as it's not going to take long (if you think about it, you might consider the Bolt to effectively be on recall since Oct/Nov 2020). If I get a good deal on a '22, fine. Anything else is substandard. Certainly the right now is very much a "Really? Really?!?" kind of situation.

GM already reduced the capability of 2017 Bolts when they disabled video playback when parked. On a related note, it makes me angry that GM was so adamant that existing owners under no circumstances would ever receive additional features they actually spent extra money and time developing a special version of the software update for 2017 & 2018 Bolts that did not include Target Charge Setting,

The video playback was never officially supported, and my understanding is that it wasn't GM's software that killed the video playback app. I was following the developer's notes, and they were reprogramming every couple of days because Google was shutting it down. As for the the additional features, were you promised that at the time of sale? Were there any examples of new, updated functions and features being provided at no additional cost? @@newscoulomb3705 You're confusing the app that let you play any content via Android Auto with the built in video playback system that would play videos directly from a USB source in the same way you can play music and look at pictures now. This was built into my car when I test drove it (did not even need a phone connected at all) but gone when I took delivery (Feb 2018). As for the Target Charge Setting, the fact is that I just assumed that a feature like this would be in the car because the notion that it wouldn't be would be nothing less than absurd. It's a feature that always should have been there and there was never an excuse for them to omit it. The fact that they are deliberately spending money to avoid giving their existing owners (who are without a doubt being negatively impacted by this recall) this basic feature is nothing but a giant FU to us from GM. A good level headed response. Yes Hyundai is replacing batteries but at their current pace it will take years to replace them all. I agree with your suggestion. I do hope that GM is able to better narrow down the affected packs. This might allow for a more targeted response. It might also be good for GM to buy back a number of suspected vehicles and tear down the packs (which is likely happening). This might be able to point them to a specific machine and process.

Thanks, Erik! You might know this: In regards to Ultium, I've been told that it requires GDS2 and is not backward compatible to the Global A communication protocol used on the Bolt EV. Does that sound right to you? Essentially, would it be impossible to retrofit Bolt EVs with redesigned Ultium packs? gm-techlink.com/?p=12167 I remember Mary Barra's 2017 Barclays presentation implied that the next generation Bolt EV battery pack would be based on Ultium, but clearly, that didn't happen.
@erikstephens34
@erikstephens34 3 жыл бұрын
@@newscoulomb3705 The BEV2 platform does not support the Global A communication protocol. So the current generation Bolt EV does not support the full Ultium architecture. The updated 2022 Bolt EV/EUV is technically not a new generation (just a mid-cycle update). The next generation Bolt will most certainly use Ultium but is not likely due out till around 2025. However in theory GM could use the modules from Ultium to build a 96S 2P pack with the 100Ah NCMA cells with a gross battery pack of 71KWh's. GM would then need to build a communication tool so that the powertrain module could talk to the BMS to make it somewhat plug and play. There would be a fair bit of development work to make that happen though. DC charging would likely still be limited to 150A because of hardware and the power distribution module.

I have a 2017 with the recall done. What a pain in the ass. Definitely charges slower now and runs more fan if fast charging. Less area under the new charging curve? At the same time I was having severe drivability issues, bucking and surging, and eventually had to get an entire new motor wiring harness. That was three weeks and $3000 in the shop. Not part of the drivetrain according to Gm so not covered by warranty. Is Gm expecting us to keep the cars outside because we saw a KZbin video or are they contacting anyone via official channels? What are they legal ramifications if the car burns my house down and they didn't notify me that it might be a risk? I just bought a new house otherwise I'd trade this thing on a model Y in a heartbeat! It's my second Gm EV ( 2015 Spark ) and the worst of the two by far except for range. Never had a charging issue problem with my 2017 Bolt when I had it for three years. I have the 2020 and 2021 Bolt right now. Zero battery charging issues as well. From the ROI and risk management standing point, GM will probably not going to replace all the batteries because the statistical analysis shows very few problems. The software update is another story. They probably didn't do a good job stress testing the update during beta testing with enough sample size in different conditions. Theory and reality are two different things. On top of that, many American companies outsource its programming jobs to programmers in other countries to save money. Based on what we've seen, outside of the 2019 Bolt EVs built in H2 of 2018, the affected battery population appears to be less than 0.02%. I would deplete the battery to 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and so forth. I would charge the vehicle in Level 1, Level 2, and DC charging. I would charge the car in 115 F and 32 F. I would use 8 amp, 12 amp, 15 amp, 24 amp, 30 amp, 40 amp and 50 amp to charge the vehicles. The programmer can create a trace back log to monitor the charging status. I would even test it in a mock American home two-car garage to charge the vehicle. Bottom line- it takes time, resources, experience, and money to test things. Someone has to identify the project milestone, scope, projected costs, team members, and risk management. A PM might be the single focal point who will be reporting to management and work with Legal. It could be the QA and QC issues with parts. Suppliers could be on the hook for failures. GM announced something yesterday. I hope they will find the source of the battery issue soon.

However, to do that I'd think that you'd also need to upgrade the HPDM (High Power Distribution Module) which I think is the thing that limits current Bolts charging rates. While Hyundai can't come up with the batteries, they were perhaps honest enough to not try to mislead everybody with claims that they could mitigate the issue with software. There is not a shred of evidence that GM's software update has had any mitigating effect or that their diagnostics were effective in flagging problematic battery packs. Hyundai were much quicker to fess up to a basic manufacturing fault. GM have exhausted every other option before owning up to the fact. The GM Ultium battery replacement would be a First Class response, (assuming GM can identify the specific batch of LG packs (Q3/18 - Q4/18) cons: Would likely cost more than a buy back as this would be a complete retrofit not only of the pack, but the entire charging system, Software, and perhaps even the motor. Also, manufactures fear component upgrades as an option as it sets a certain precedent. pros: Would be massively popular in terms of public relations. A move like this would turn the tables on the negative and showcase how a BEV could be field upgraded. Option: A extremely generous trade-up incentive; taking back the Bolt's in question at some pro-rated trade-in value for any new Chevy/Cadillac/Hummer BEV. If GM gave me a $25K credit (heck even $20K) on my 2017 Bolt in exchange for a slightly discounted Cadillac Lyriq, I'm taking that deal.

I recently did a video about this on my channel, also talking about the latest update from GM and buy backs and how to move forward with that. Something that is going to limit the blame game in the case of the Bolt is that GM basically let LG build the entire EV drivetrain on the Bolt, not just the battery, whereas most of the drivetrain on the affected Hyundais were built by Mobis. LG can’t really blame GM when LG is the one who built the entire drivetrain. I had also not been my experience on my 2019 that the maximum draw from the charger has been limited. Before or after the recall, it won’t draw more than 150A from the charger, but before and after the recall, my car will still draw additional power from the charger to power the ac, heat, battery heater etc if there is surplus available that the battery can’t accept. In my case, charging speeds were only marginally slower after the battery update vs before, despite the fact that it runs the battery cooler much more aggressively after the recall.

We have two 2019 Bolts, one needed the recall updates and one did not. We're content with our cars just the way they are. We do park them outside and we generally only use Departure Charging. It's a valid point that you make about running the car while DCFC-ing. I would always sit in there with the climate controls going.

One car caught fire at 70%, so departure charging won't help. As GM suggests, only charge when you're next to / inside the car to call 911 at first sign of smoke.

Excerpt from my EMAIL yesterday 7/23/2021 (I have a 2017): " As part of GM’s commitment to safety, experts from GM and LG have identified the simultaneous presence of two rare manufacturing defects in the same battery cell as the root cause of battery fires in certain Chevrolet Bolt EVs.As part of this recall, GM will replace defective battery modules in the recall population. We will notify customers when replacement parts are ready. While we prepare to conduct this recall, we are asking customers to take the following steps until the new remedy has been performed" FYI

My heart goes out to all who being impacted by this, especially those who could not get GM to either buyback or work a swap. My wife pushed me on getting the buy back process kicked off when all of this started back in January and I'm so glad I did. In my case, a buyback was a better deal and I took my money elsewhere. I know many of you who were either denied or financially the process wouldn't work out in your favor.

Based on what I've seen, your experience tends to be the more common. Most people who were denied buybacks didn't request one until the software update was almost ready. We're supposedly going to hear from GM tomorrow about these most recent fires and whether they were the result of a failure of the software patch or something else.

Super cute backseat pupper! My 2019 (bought in Feb 2019) is definitely in what seems to be the highest risk group for a battery fire. Nothing short of a battery swap away from a LG Chem pack will make me satisfied with resolution for my car. I love my car, but it’s unnerving knowing it could go up in smoke with no warning; hopefully keeping it at or below 80% SOC will help keep it from going up in flames, but when I need a 100% charge for the beginning of a long trip, it’s going to be scary driving it at/near a full charge.

I would recommend all Bolt EV owners who are affected by this battery issue and still have a loan or lease on the vehicle to obtain gap insurance ASAP. Due to GM's dramatic discounting, the value of your Bolt EV has dropped severely. Without gap insurance, if your Bolt EV catches on fire and the vehicle is a total loss you'll be on the hook for the dramatically reduced insurance estimated value versus the outstanding loan / lease amount. In one recent case GM told the owner of a burnt Bolt EV to sue GM for the difference in value and GM stated the battery is not under warranty due to it catching on fire.

So we were going to trade our 2018 Bolt EV in on a Tesla Model Y at the end of June. However we had interested parties for the car and chose to sell the Bolt privately. The Bolt had the recall software update installed so we were good to go. Needless to say the interested parties went up in smoke, pardon the pun. We are now stuck with 2 cars (only wanted one…) and wonder how soon we will reasonably be able to sell the Bolt. At this point an immediate buyback would be our preferred option as it sounds like any fix will take time. A mess relating to a car we have otherwise loved through our period of ownership

The diagnostic cannot prevent the fires. At best, it helped them figure it out. If they have not figured out which cells are actually defective, then they MUST replace ALL the packs.

The diagnostic and software already prevented several fires (triggering partial or complete battery replacements for several owners). This new issue is very specifically a manufacturing defect, so if they can identify which cells were defective, they can replace the modules/cells in those affected vehicles.

Oh man, what a mess! 2017-19 Bolt EV owners are kind of screwed here. At this point, the easiest thing might be for GM to do a buyback and get these cars off the street or offer free replacement packs cannibalized from 2022s. The bad press and liability has got to be way more than the dollars it would cost to purchase them back or replace the packs. Eric, this might be a good opportunity for you to get that Mustang Mach-E California Route 1. :-)

I definitely think they should just do a no questions asked trade across the board for remaining 2020+ Bolt EVs. That might be the cleanest solution for them. I'm actually still fine with my Bolt EV at this point. My next EV will be to replace my Volt, though I might look to start tinkering with my Bolt EV in the future. Rumor on the Reddit is GM is making an announcement on Friday so stay tuned. IMO they are trying to mitigate the fires by detecting faulty cells with the software but obviously the software can only do so much based on the sensors available in the battery pack. Msrp or buybacks are going to be the way to go because battery replacements will take a significant amount of time, resources, manpower at the service centers to complete, and it would take away from their ability to produce more bolts.

They should replace battery packs or give full MSRP buybacks. I either want a new battery pack in my car or the money to buy a brand new EV. I bought my Bolt EV for less than $16k thinking it would be an awesome EV, but it turns out it's an otherwise awesome EV that's dragged down by a dangerous battery pack. Note: The reason I believe full MSRP buybacks are in order is because.. what are people supposed to do with the money after the buyback? Payback the loan and give up on buying any cars until they can afford to buy a $40,000 Tesla model 3? The only car that comes even close to the same range as Bolt EV? Or buy a Nissan leaf without enough range or proper charge port to go on road trips in the US? Buy an EV like the Hyundai ioniq electric that has HALF the range of a Bolt EV? Come on now.. People bought these Bolt EVs because they fit their needs and budget, not because they're looking to waste money on a cute car.

The software patch was not to "fix" the problem. It was to try to better identify the issue before it happens by better monitoring of the battery voltages. The problem is LG sold GM 69,000 bad battery packs and LG needs to own up to it. EV batteries are still safer than driving around carrying 20 gallons of petroleum in the back of your car.
@newscoulomb3705
@newscoulomb3705 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that the software wasn't a "fix" and it was never meant to be. It was a diagnostic and fire-mitigation tool. However, saying LG sold 69,000 bad battery packs is hyperbole, though. It appears that less than 0.05% of all Bolt EV battery packs are affected in any way. So we're looking at a few hundred total. Still far too many and deserving of the recall, but nothing close to 69,000 bad battery packs.
