Hi Eric, After the injector swap and you fired the engine and reviewed the scanner info, you mentioned the slightly negative fuel trim averages and theorized that vapor pulled into the pvc system from fuel contaminated oil was likely he reason. Brilliant. Information like that is another reason as to why I follow your channel. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your vast depth of knowledge. I began my learning 60 years ago in the pages of my beloved HotRod magazine. I still read it (Street Rodder et. al. have just been cancelled as a print media, sadly) and for some years now KZbin has been a huge contributor to my continued attempt to learn. I recently had a sudden dead cylinder misfire issue with my '06 G6 V6. Got a P0303 (cylinder 3 misfire) along with the flashing CEL and lean codes. Went through troubleshooting steps: swapped plugs and wires between cylinders, checked spark with inline tester, checked compression on that cylinder (was 190-200PSI). Was looking like a fuel delivery issue. Tested the injector coil resistance and it was good. Checked as much wiring as I could and nothing seemed amiss. Checked the signal from the ECM to the injector and it looked good. All evidence was pointing to a clogged or stuck closed injector. I replaced the faulty injector (new bottom o-rings for all the others too) along with plugs and wires for good measure. Was a bit of a job due to having to remove the top intake plenum and everything in the way. Got it all buttoned back up and that fixed it :)

Gotta like the way the scope recorded the results, at about 6:21, and it was helpful to see how you had the pressure sensor attached later. Of course the slight variance in the pause between each test doesn't make any difference, since the duration of each 'on' time was identical. Cool to see the test automatically boosted rail pressure to exact baseline before each cylinder test. Excellent point about how excessive fuel in one cylinder causes lean misfires on the rest of the bank. It is so nice to see another SMA video!

Thanks Eric a day late , just replaced seals and O-rings on my injectors on a 1990 Nissan GT-R didn’t lube the O-rings, dang!!! Seamed to go in fine though? Read the manual but it’s 25 years old and the part telling me to oil the O-rings was later found elsewhere. Watching your videos have given me the confidence to overhaul most of the external bits myself because nobody wants to touch the car or even price work.
@davidquinn61614 жыл бұрын
When you mentioned "oil" to lube the "O" rings, I assume you didn't really mean engine oil. But just for the record, never use engine oil ( or petroleum based greases) to lube "O" rings. These will destroy the "O" rings. Only use silicone based lubes. As Eric mentioned, dielectric grease or brake grease are good. I buy "O" ring grease at my local swimming pool dealer and use it for this purpose.
@allanadam45534 жыл бұрын
David Quinn thanks, no I didn’t use motor oil, although I’m no mechanic by any means, I am learning. They replaced o2s, pump, MAF, and oddly enough, intake o rings. Shop before them did coils on bank 2 and full ignition tune up. The 3rd was talking about a new ecm. When I got it, every cyl. on bank 2 showed misfires in history, but only 8 was current. I used my old school Snapper fuel pressure gauge with the scan tool hooked up and ran the balance test. #8 showed a 12 psi difference as opposed to the rest. Honestly, I'd not seen this style injector fail like this before, so your vid is definitely worth watching!

My open lab teacher also told me to “not dry hump my injectors”. People who don’t know how to diagnose things end up throwing parts at it, “why don’t you change them all” ? Sometimes it’s not worth it sometimes it is, sometimes - if ain’t broke don’t fix it! Every now and then my money light comes on, i then check the codes and its 304 again, i then replace fuel injector and all other necessary things pertaining to it. I clear the codes run it for a week then the money light comes back on with the same old 304 on the number 4 cylinder on the v six 2006 jeep liberty. I am now considering the lifter to possible be bad causing a slow release of exhaust or not closing all the way in turn making it idle just a little ruff on that cylinder. some times the money light will go off for a week or two and then randomly come back on with the code of 304 on #4. Richard Akins The NAPA part was wrong, but it was a NAPA branded part, not the AC Delco part. That one came from Advance Auto Parts and was the correct part. Quite possibly the short injector is far a 2007 and up 5.3. I've run in to parts issues with my 2007 Silverado Classic, so normally I order the parts for a 2006 model to get the correct parts online. The confusion in the parts catalogs is due to the mid year body style change, so it's easier to call it a 2006 because nothing changed for the '07 due to the new model release.

Thank you for making these videos and I always learn something new when I watch. I bought a scan tool that I can plug in and look at a few things and your videos help me understand what I am seeing like the fuel trim and other things, what is normal and what isn't. I just bought a used 2018 GMC Sierra so another reason to watch. Days after I bought it the fuel pump died and they replaced it under warranty. The truck was acting up when I took it in and when they did a test drive it completely died on them and they had to have it towed back to the garage.

Useful? yes! Useable? Yes! In addition, very, very interesting! Entertainment bonus - the sayings of the scruffy guy from Harry Potter, thoughts on globs and the "twister technique". Another demonstration of the absolute need to be able to get, view and understand system(s) data in order to call yourself a mechanic in 2020. (PS - showing both repaired and broken injector data on screen (as well as your notes) is a very nice touch for understanding the process - couple of printouts provides documentation to the customer as well.)

I've been so inspired by Eric and family at SMA !! I'm giving everything in life The Full Beans !! God bless the O's !! Paying It Forward video was moving. Learned about used car inspections and got a bonus of seeing The Holy Spirit in action. Happy New Year O's !!

Great Vid. i have a cylinder misfire on #8 2011 Silverado 5.3. I replaced the spark plugs to a copper type...think they have have been at 60 but should have be gapped at 40. Ran like hell and not a 308 this time but a 300 and multiple misfire...almost wouldn't run. Soooo ordered all new wires, iridium plugs and coils (truck is high miles). Now truck runs great but back to 8 misfire and 8 plug (after putting new ones in) was much darker than the other 7 new ones. I'm thinking now that I have a bad injector that is leaking fuel into the cylinder and causing a misfire and code to set. Effects idle mostly. Question: You can change an injector without taking all of the other stuff off the top that you see in other videos? Just remove injector rail bolts? Pry up to get them out and then get back in without splitting O-rings? Or go ahead and take everything off and do it right? Tks

I'd have been curious to see the injector resistance or a current ramp of the failed injector compared to the others. Typically when an injector coil resistance decreases due to an internal short, it will begin to overfuel because the increased current opens the injector faster (reduces its latency). Remember the old GM Multec injectors? When they shorted (assuming they didn't smoke the ECM injector driver) they would make the engine run horribly rich because the injector opened much faster. Typically it is more noticeable at idle and lower load because the actual amount of time the injector is spraying fuel is extremely short at idle, typically around a millisecond, even though the commanded injector PW might be 2.5-3ms. Thats because 1 or 2ms of that may be the amount of time it takes for the injector to physically open, so if the injector pw is 3ms, 1.5ms of that may be the time needed to open the injector and the other 1.5ms is the actual time the injector is spraying fuel. If the injector is internally shorted and opening faster, say in 0.5ms, you now have 0.5ms of injector opening time (latency) and 2.5ms of the injector spraying fuel, thus the cylinder runs rich.

If intelligent guys like you can do it! I won't ever need to try it! but it's great to see how you solve it, and fix it !
