I, for one, very much enjoy scope based diagnostics, which i appreciate you doing matt. It covers everything, you can see the coil operating well, the oscillations at the beginning of the dwell segment and also at the end of the firing line. And the importance of establishing a baseline. Those are absolutely fundamental to secondary ignition waveform diagnosis. Keep em coming, great stuff. Maybe you'll indulge us to more scope based diagnostics, current ramping, primary and secondary waveform diagnostics, and maybe even in cylinder transducer compression waveform for those mechanical issues. It's be inferesting to see more of your take on these approaches.

Couldn’t agree more man! My original thinking of “most of my viewers don’t own a scope so i wont use it” was flawed. The scope is actually one of then best training tools because you can “see” the behavior of the voltage and amperage and how they are related to resistance variables. Yes i will be using it more, but mostly to explain principles.

Loved this video. Great method of diagnosis by process of elimination and logical reasoning. Brilliantly done. I don't think anyone should have to pay a professional who's method of diagnosis is throwing parts at the problem and hoping. Anyone can do that. You pay a pro because they have the equipment but more importantly the skills and brainpower to identify and the positively isolate the problem first time. That's their trade after all. If a pro replaced 4 spark plugs and all the wires and the car is still mis-firing, why should they be paid? Mechanics are hella expensive.

Voltage was good, but i went to do a continuity test on #1 injector, it was completely dead. I had an open circuit. I suspected it as i had a check engine light for cylinder 1 fuel injector circuit. I tested it because i didn't know if it was the injector or the voltage.

Quick, pedantic note on what you said at 11:10 : You had not *yet* shown that there was an open winding. At that point in the video, it could also have been a mechanically stuck injector. It's a minor point, and it was definitely proven that the injector was *bad*, but I think it's worth noting that the tests showed up to 11:10 did not specifically prove an open coil.
@SchrodingersBox5 жыл бұрын
Not possible because there was not 12V on the ground side of the injector when ground side control was open. Only an open winding could cause that.

Good evening sir just another Mastertech with my two cents good thing to tell the DY is you can pull a single injector wire off on each unit without the risk of hitting 10,000 KV from dis ignition, continue to pour each injector wire to listen for change and when you pull in injector wire with no change that is your cylinder misfire. All the basic diagnosis fuel compression injector pulse which is the grounding signal from the PCM flashing injector for on-time same thing happens for the coil I’ll call Elsa hot from the PCM they are used as a ground sink from the powertrain control module have fun guys.

Glad I stumbled into your channel. Very informative. Been watching MISFIRE videos. My car is vibrating/shaking with a flashing service engine soon that appears and reappears when the car vibrates. Brought to a known auto shop and I was told it was a misfire. They changed the coil, test drive it, but car vibrates and service engine showed up again. They weren't able to fix the problem. I was told it could be an engine problem or an internal engine problem and was suggested to go to an engine shop. But I'm still somehow skeptical, boyfriend who is a mechanic himself doesn't think it is engine problem, but isn't here to see it himself. Now I don't know what's my next step. To go see another shop or listen to them and go to engine shop.
@SchrodingersBox4 жыл бұрын
Misfire is one of the easiest diagnoses there is. It’s surprising a shop could not diagnose it. that’s sad. Your first step is to determine if it’s single or multi-cylinder misfire. At least was that determined? Btw don’t respond in tagalog lol.
@LearnTagalogandIlocano4 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox Thank you for taking the time to respond. 😃 It's single misfire, since they said it may have internal damage on cylinder 3. They changed it, test drive and it vibrated and service engine showed up again. They switched the coils, and still with the misfire. So they took of the new coil they put and returned back the coil that's in there. I asked if the other parts that can also possibly cause the misfire were still good or if they were checked, air system, plug wires, injector, spark plug, etc and was told yes, that's why they think it's internal damage. And that's that, it wasn't fixed and was recommended to go to an engine shop.
@SchrodingersBox4 жыл бұрын
Ok assuming they did all those checks correctly (I’m not so sure), mechanical failure would indeed be more likely but not conclusive. It’s ridiculously easy to check. They can do either a compression test or a leakdown test. Either of these tests would confirm the misfire is due to a serious mechanical failure. The leakdown test would actually specify exactly what that failure is (head gasket, rings, valves etc). It’s just really hard for me to conceive they tested all those systems and yet they didn’t do a much simpler test to confirm it’s mechanical. That’s weird to me. It’s also possible however that you have something as simple as a vacuum leak in the intake manifold- causing an air leak or even coolant to enter the #3 cylinder and make it misfire. Did they check for that? I bet not. Wish I could look at it!
@LearnTagalogandIlocano4 жыл бұрын
@@SchrodingersBox And I wish we're in the same city. No, they didn't mention about those tests and I didn't know either to ask if they did it. I think I'll look for other repair shops around before considering an engine shop or other options. 😕 Thank you for your time. God bless you. 🙏

I have a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT in the repair shop as I’m writing this for a Cylinder 5 misfire which is not intermittent, you can feel it at idle but not so much when driving. The shop replaced the fuel injector because the ohms reading was 3.6 compared to the 3.0 on the others they suspected a bad spray pattern could be the fault. That didn’t solve the problem. Next they removed the valve cover to inspect the camshafts and lifters they claimed that this particular engine has a high failure rate. All the lifters, camshafts and springs appeared fine, they used borescope to inspect the valves and no damage was found. They reassembled and test drove the van and they say misfire disappeared after hard driving and said that indicates carbon buildup on the valves causing the misfire. They did a carbon of the van with a “BG” product. They test drove the van and said all was good. I picked up the van and after just about two miles the check engine lamp came on and I stopped the van and plugged in my basic check engine tool and it had the same P0305 code! Now the shop is telling me that the cylinder head may be bad and needs to be sent to a machine shop for inspection and repair. I’ve lost all confidence that they can fix the root problem at this point so I need a second opinion. Do you think this cylinder head could be the problem? P.S. I forgot to mention they did a leak down test on the #5 cylinder and it passed, and said valves were sealing.
@SchrodingersBox Жыл бұрын
not sure what to say but before all of that, they should be able to narrow it this is a fuel, spark, or compression issue. that is the very first step. they have to determine which of these it is before proceeding. if they can’t do that, someone else needs to look at it.
@SKWDMDYT6 жыл бұрын
Probably a dum question from somebody who knows little about diagnosis...why the change in the electrical signal going to the coil, if the problem is the fuel injector? Is that the ECU making an adjustment to compensate for the bad injector?
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
Good question. It’s because the spark line uses fuel as a conductor. without fuel, resistance across the air gap increases multiplicatively. If resistance increases, then voltage must increase as per Ohm’s Law. The “spike” on the spark line is the voltage increase.
@HaroonKhan-qc7nm6 жыл бұрын
Nothing as a dum question. I had the same question.
@fpatton6 жыл бұрын
Good question, I just learned, too
@robmut13576 жыл бұрын
But why did it only spike when you reved it? If lack of fuel made the voltage spike higher, wouldn’t it be there at all RPM’s? Great video, btw! We can see where you cut out the good details for the paid channel. Gotta smooth those transitions. Lol
@SchrodingersBox6 жыл бұрын
Rob there are more dynamics to the resistance across the gap and I don’t pretend to know all of them but definitely the higher the compression the greater the resistance so by revving the engine, these other dynamics are introduced which in combination with the absence of fuel create exponentially higher resistance across the gap than at idle. You can actually detect many other secondary ignition issues- even spark outside the cylinder (cracked plug ceramic or frayed wire) based on the behavior of that spark line. You can even detect a low compression based on the shape of the spark line!

All…. The… Time. Usually I diagnose that a new engine is needed when I find low compression in the cylinder and I determine it’s a bottom end issue. I would ask what specifically they found that suggests engine replacement. If it’s low compression in that cylinder then yeah, you have a major problem. If it’s anything else though, I can’t see that you need a new engine.

Matt, long time fan, lurker, and borderline on Quantum Mekanix. I DO really like your methods. I have the same truck, same motor. This might tip me over to being a paid sub to QM. Enjoyed your vid. Thank you!

Don't forget a good way to check a injector for firing is a plain old simple stethoscope. I do it from time to time just so I know what my vehicle should be sounding like.

stuzman I wanted to make couple of questions on this video and since Matt don’t like stupid questions maybe you can help me with the following.. 1) how did he know that the current draw of the test light was not going to damage the driver? 2) how base on spike on the scope he knew there was a fuel problem? 3) do you know where I can find information on how to read a scope?

Hi Tito and hope you're doing well! For question 1, most fuel injectors will run about one amp and most test lights are around 200mA. So the current draw of the test light is less than the current driver capability. So there is no problem in damaging the driver. For question 2, you noticed that the spark line was rising up significantly at the end when the RPM was increased. This shows that the cylinder was running out of fuel making the air-fuel mixture leaner. You also noticed that the spark line looked okay when the engine was idling. This is because the computer is able to compensate for a low fuel condition at idle. But when the engine speed is increased, the air will move much faster than the fuel. And by the time the O2 sensor sees the lean condition, the computer has to compensate. Of course with the air moving much faster, the scope is able to see this lean condition. And on question 3, it takes practice in learning to diagnose waveforms in what it's telling you. Some pretty good channels that uses a scope are here on KZbin. Two channels that comes to mind are scannerdanner and south main auto. Of course there are quite a few others out there too. So a little searching and I'm sure you'll find them. Hope that answers your questions and good luck on your knowledge of learning systems.

Matt, love your video. I'm stumped, 05 Chrysler Town and Country with the 3.3 has loss of power, major stumble at about 3900rpms, good wires, new spark plugs, strong spark at every cylinder, clean air filter, no restriction in the PVC, or Catalytic converter. Disconnect the spark plug wire from cylinder 4, and major stumble goes away, but still lack of power and random missing. Has good compression. Any clues??

sounds like it may be missing fuel on #4

Thanks, I guess checking out that injector is my next step. I can hear it working a stethoscope, perhaps it is leaking fuel, causing the over heating in the exhaust? Thanks for your help, any ideas are appreciated!

Thanks ,i really appriciate you for such a simple and practical test and diagnostic method, Just i 've been confuding when you're using the scope,i mean ,i don't know how to set up the scope and trigger to catch the wave form ,do me a favor with introducing a good surce to find out all the secret about how using the scope. best wishes.
