I have a fleet of 11 trucks and I have pretty much converted them all over to gas over the last three years from diesel and it comes down to the fact these big gas motors can pretty much do what diesels did 15 years ago. I tow typically between 15,000 pounds and 20,000 pounds regularly and a 3500 with the gas engine does everything I need. Less maintenance about the same mpg towing and it cost me roughly $12,000 less per truck for my entry cost. I’ve got four 7.3 L F350 gas trucks and I now have five 3500 6.6L Silverado‘s with two F 450 diesels for my super loads. These gas engines are amazing. Concerning the oil burning issues we haven’t had any issues there. I know a lot of that is related to the tree hugging liberal commie bullshit that they put on his engines these days.

I have a 2020, 2500 Silverado with the 6.6 Gas engine that I bought new in August of 2020. Today it has 77, 378 miles on it and 99% of all my driving is without a trailer. It’s more of a rough riding station wagon than a work truck. The mileage works out to be about 12 mpg around town and around 16.5 mpg on the highway. What I found is that the different fuel blends winter / summer that we get in Florida negatively affect my mileage more than any other factor. Scheduled maintenance is by the book and my oil consumption is exactly one quart every 5,000 miles. My original Goodyear tires lasted 62,000 miles, (I pushed the mileage), and the only item outside of standard maintenance that needed repair was one of the seat vibrators for lane changes quit at 5,000 miles. Nothing else.

Just an update to my above comment. As of November 2024, the truck has 133,200 miles on it. The vehicle still gives me the same mileage and the same oil consumption. The original Goodyears were replaced with Michelin LTX, and there are now 71,000 miles on them. I can get another 10,000 miles before replacement. Front brakes have 68% remaining and the rears have 79%. I'm moving from a 2016' 2500, 6.0 and super stoked for the Allison upgrade. Not happy to hear about the oil consumption. praying this is not an issue. We're an all GM fam and I don't even open the hood. My service guy does that, when I go for oil changes. So TBD Mileage - I've gotta say that my 6.0 in my 16' has been incredible compared to anything I'd owned previously. A few trucks ago I had a Chevy, 3500 with 7.4 to pull my boat. i never bested 11mpg empty and hooked to anything, 8mpg all day long like nothing was behind me. I then bought (please lord, I have sinned) an SD250 Pherd - with a 5.4 was it? the motor everyone raved about? that every single one had to have the manifold bolts replace because htey broke, that job nobody wanted to do and cost me like $800 - that was a gutless piece of shit that couldn't pull it's own weight and still got the mileage of my 7.4 - on a solid front axle to boot that drove like a 1965 Power Wagon. A few Chevy's later and I have to say, my 2016 HD, best g'damn truck ever, and I've been buying trucks since the early 80's - and at heart, a MOPAR guy. But today, long in the tooth, loving a smooth ride, but a brute when it comes to hauling a load and ardent hater of diesel in a pickup - Chevy is just my thing. i base this solely on "who has left me walking the least" ... and it's Chevrolet. I've owned them all, new and used for a hell of a long time and that's just my experience. I'm only loyal to "who has fucked me the least" and money has nothing to do with it. I traded a used shotgun for a Pinto once - one of the best damn cars I ever owned which by all accounts is really fk'd up.

One major difference we have experienced with the 2500 were the brakes, it stops better than any pickup we have driven. I like the truck and test drove a 2021 with this gas engine. It felt like the 6-speed transmission held each gear a second too long if that makes sense. The 10-speed should help with acceleration and towing keeping the engine closer to peak power when needed. However the oil issue is not acceptable. I'm going to wait until it's fixed. I've read the engine was designed by Navistar if that's significant. I'm sure glad you made this video. Thanks!
@redline455 Жыл бұрын
Hello. The engine is an LT based powerplant which is an evolution of the LS V8 from a few years ago. The LS/LT is one of the most proven and rugged gas engine platforms ever developed. It is not in any way co developed with Navistar. Ford used Navistar for their Powerstroke Diesel engines from 2003.5-2010 and it was an absolute disaster for them. Also, you very right about the 6 speed feeling a little sluggish with this engine. I feel also that it holds the overall performance of this truck back. The 10speed should change that. Now I'm wondering what 10 speed they will use. Is it the 10 speed from the 1/2 tons that was co developed with Ford, or will it be a version of the 10L1000 that's behind the Duramax. Let's hope for door number 2. Cheers.

I have this same Chevy 2500 vehicle with the gas engine and since June 2020: Love it for many reasons including the the AutoTrac differential (pseudo AWD that is great for winter driving) and the long standard bed box along with my purchased GM made Side Mounted Bed Storage Boxes. No major issues worth mentioning and no oil loss/burning to any degree and according to my dipstick, it never goes down enough/measurably where I find the need to add oil between oil change intervals. Sure, it has some piston blow by like any engine and it’s fair to mention that Direct Injection systems have their advantages and disadvantages, yet I installed an Oil Catch Can (I now realize how this is a long term wise investment) and it really works (I find 1/2-3/4 cup of a soupy mixture of oil+gasoline in the can approx. after 5000 km of driving). Engine and Transmision for me actually runs buttery smooth (shifting and all) and one can hear a nice yet muted by emissions system “roar” as in a muscle car. Oh, and my gas mileage (I switched to a more aggressive AT tire as well) is 14.5-16.5 L/100 km (14.3-16.5 us mpg) unloaded (best was 13.7 L/100 km) and driving respectfully on the highway during spring-summer-autumn months (winter is different because I put the AutoTrac ON for that season to be safer and run studded winter tires and also idle a lot more like most everyone else; in Alberta, eh!).

Nice review, glad to see in comments that folks aren’t having the issues mentioned. Direct injection will have issues down the road once carbon starts building up on intake valves. I have a 22 Silverado 2500. I’ve heard reports of oil consumption and I’ve heard of people not burning a drop. I personally have noticed no oil consumption. One theory I have is how the trucks are treated from day one. I personally plan on owning mine a very long while so I babied mine big time and was very methodical in how I drove it. It had 6mi on it when I took delivery and I did have to take it on the fwy the first day but I varied my speed and never went over 63-65 and would let off a bit on occasion and so on. That was the first 100 or so miles. Then I did lots of varied speeds around town and only did short trips of under 10mi on the fwy for the next 600mi. I never went above 2,800-3k rpm. I changed the oil at 780mi. I again changed the oil at about 3k miles and have only taken it up to maybe 4,500rpm once. Mainly it’s under 3k. I didnt need to tow until 3,500mi. So for me, that seemed like a logical break in. Others can do what they want. Mine burns no oil.

It’s luck of the draw really. GM uses some really cheap, garbage grade parts for their V8s, you might have gotten a Monday or Tuesday engine, most it seems are slapped together on Thursday or Friday afternoon with quota approaching and nobody wants to work on Saturday or Sunday to catch up

I get 16+ mpg on Hiway running from here to Dallas. 350 miles at 70-80mph. I love the truck. I feel it pulls way better than the most loved 7.3 power stroke. About equal to a 5.9 Cummins with my 2016 Duramax better than all that I’ve had. Only trouble I’ve had is I threw a ESC code in the last month. But that don’t seem to have any effect. The oil burning in Chevrolet goes back a long ways. I bought a new 1987 3/4 ton V8 Chevy pickup, and it burned a lot of oil right after I drove it off the dealer lot. When I complained and brought it back to the dealer, the Service Department diagnosed the problems as worn valve seals. When I asked how can the valve seals be "worn" with only about 100 miles on the truck, the Service person said, "Valve seals are like light bulbs; sometimes they last a month, and sometimes they last years." After they replaced the valve seals, I never had an oil consumption problem again.

@Deleteguest Жыл бұрын
Mine has about 39k on it right now. I did an oil change at 420 miles, 1500, and then 4000. Since the truck is DI, I bought an oil catch can from a company called J&L Oil Separator Co. The catch can is designed for these trucks. I will say, I change my oil every 3k miles. These engines spit A LOT of oil into the PCV system. Even after just 3k miles, that catch can was damn near topped off. Which is great to see because that just means it's working I guess! I did do ONE 4k mile oil change but that's because I did a long road trip from Minnesota to Arizona and back in like 4 days. So I wasn't too worried about that. Oil was still new. But running my oil that long, I did notice that when I went to change it after like 4200 miles total, that the oil level was only maybe covering 1/4th of the dipstick. The way this truck consumes oil is very inconsistent. In between 3k oil changes, sometimes it doesn't consume a drop of oil, and sometimes it'll eat through maybe half of the dipstick. It's certainly no issue I have to worry about though, because I'm not one of those guys who run 5,000 or 7,500 oil intervals.

Same architecture as ford 6.8 and 7.3 use. Its just a weaker version. Same trans as the duramax has had for years but its a gas version so its not as strong as the duramax version. Knowledgeable buyers know its not an allison trans and that isnt a point of superiority anyway. Given the common torque converter failure of the 6l90e of the 6.0 and first couple years of 6.6, gm is better off using the 10 speed ford trans. Valve body failure and the bushing issue appears to be less frequent than the torque converter issue of the 90e

I traded my 2020 ram 2500 6.4 tradesman for 2020 6.6 Chevy Ltz. First thing is I bought ram brand new an changed the oil every 3k till 60k miles when I traded it in on Chevy with same mileage. I had zero issues with the ram. Not one thing broke or one light ever came on of three years of owning. Ran the truck hard every day. Traded it cause of comfort of the Chevy an quality of the truck rams metal was weak lots of dings an dents from wood off road etc. so far I’ve had the Chevy 5k miles an it burns oil a quart every 1200 miles or so. Which is bout every 2 weeks for me. I haven’t ran the truck hard or towed with it one time. Few loads of firewood that’s about it. Also recently it didn’t start 3 times in a row I started to worry as I was 4 hours from home on a fishing trip when I hit the remote start it fired right up. So maybe it’s my luck for trading a reliable truck for a lemon but I will say the Chevy drives a lot better tighter then the Ram it does get better gas mileage I’ve gotten 19mpg Highway 14 city. The 6 speed transmission suites me better then the 8 speed ram which was constantly shifting in the mountains I live in. The Chevy transmission runs hotter I have noticed 180 to 190 where the ram roped out highest temp I’ve seen was 181 towing heavy loads. Ram was fast as well would mop the 6.6 im not unhappy with the trade just figured I’d share my experience. Hope it helps

Great job with a broad analysis. I have been a huge diesel fan but with the emissions and high cost I opted for a gasser. I can't see the $100k price tag, I bought a used 2021 gmc 3500 srw. I looked at all 3 brands, decided on gm. I was really impressed on the pulling power for a gas engine. Ram fell face down, and ford had more get up and go but worse fuel mileage, and major break downs drove me away. So far in 25k miles no oil consumption, and unless I am climbing with loads it's decent on fuel mileage, . Pulling 20k-32k goosneck is my average weights pulling. Really don't drive empty. But 11.2 mpg loaded is average. Not too bad. Really luvin the torque this engine puts out. Don't pull over 70 mph. Cruise control set when on highway.

Im form Poland and im a great enthusiast of American Automotive indusrty, i love to listen about V8 engines and features they have. That oil consumption is now a major concern everywhere, European fnacy cars also have use oil issues problem, and the major reason of that is they have a lot more thin piston rings than cars form for example 90s. They use lot more thin oil 0W20, and they have delicate thin piston rings and that is the reason of major oil consumption. I remember a Skoda S100 from the 60 we had and that engine had a normal useage of oil at 1L/1000km, but it was a car from the 60s and technology was a lot more primitive then now.

My old Cummins was great, even towing, but these news ones really aren’t. The comfort and ease of the towing experience is awesome in the duramax, but diesel isn’t the way to go anymore if you’re looking for cost/efficiency. It’s purely pay to play. I checked the oil and there wasn't a drop on my dipstic.. brought it to the dealership and they added 2 quarts to bring it to full level.. at 19,800 miles the change engine oil soon again came on and the engine was low again on oil roughly 2 quarts.. now I'm bring the truck in to the dealership every 2,000 miles to check consumption.. Friday they checked it and added oil without telling me and showing me the dipstic and said it was at 3,300 down .6 of a quart.. again they didn't show me the dipstic and added oil to my truck behind my back so im freaking pissed the fuc off... I absolutely love the truck it's regular cab 8 foot bed LT the most loaded you can get for a regular cab it was a special order it took 5 months to get.. I have 5 year bumper to bumper good till 10/2027 and a life time warranty on the engine so my fingers are crossed with this ordeal hopefully it gets sorted out.. ✌️

Great detail in this video, appreciate the insights on the oil consumption.

I was going to pull the trigger on one of these this weekend but that oil consumption issue mentioned in this video made me gun shy. I fought that battle in the past and have absolutely no desire to go through that BS again.

Great video. Can you make a video of the big 3 on their common issues and their price of repair if not on warranty. I have a 2020 tradesman power wagon that just been problematic. Currently it doesn’t change into gear. Luckily it’s under warranty but honestly I want to trade it in. I also have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee that I’ve spent 7k u.s. dollars in a year and a half. Looking at selling it real soon. Every issue with the Jeep was $1300 or more. Nothing was a cheap fix on it. So a vid on the 2500 gas on the 3 would be great. Don’t care about towing. I just want a truck that’s last and if one thing is a common issue , that it won’t cost me my arm and leg like the Jeep did.

I have a2020 with 89000 k no oil consumption issues 12.5 to 13.5 L per 100k . We tow a holiday trailer with a rzr on a truck deck and likes it fuel tow in the mountains . I feel the power is pretty good for a gas engine I feel it is a very good engine and no issues . My back ground is iam a licensed automotive mechanic with over 40yrs in the business most of that time at gm dealerships

I have a 2022 GMC 2500HD no noticeable oil consumption, but I installed a catch can when new and it accumulates about an ounce of oil every 500 miles or so. That is after letting the water settle out.

Owned this truck for about 2500 miles now. I’ve added three qts of oil, I do tow a 7500lb trailer often. Frustrating. Is there a fix first this other than replacing piston rings? Great video.

I put in a PCV reroute to a catch can for my 2021. Trying to keep the DI as clean as possible to avoid build up

I own a 2022 L8T crew cab LTZ with 35k miles on it. Recently did a 1200 mile round trip Iowa-Arkansas and returned 16.7mpg at 75-77mph for the trip. Mine used less than 1/2 quart in 5k miles before I changed the oil. Non-issue for me.

Got a 23 3500 and get the same mpg as my 14 2500 cargo van with the 4.8 v-8 @ 6900#s. So to me the 6.6 is pretty efficient on gas at 14.5 mpg

I understand the feeling/judgements/comparisons on the big 3 engines. While you are buying a certain power train, the rest of the truck comes with that. Even if this 6.6 is the pooch of the 3, it's proven that the whole of the vehicle will outlast the other 2 substantial. Really would like to see Toyota dive into HD trucks.

I, too, wish Toyota would add a HD. The thing he forgets to mention is the 7.3 has some major top end problems, and I don’t trust the 10 speed transmissions on all of the Big 3 except for the Allison.

Toyota owns Hino so that could be a reality one day..

Yup the dodges are junk in front ends in my opinion fords have lots issues also if you need more power than 401 hp or 464 torque buy a duramax or cummins

Almost all modern manufacturers have had Issues with using oil. Often to do with the low tension piston rings. Ford coyote engine a couple years ago! I would bet they have that sorted by the time you are talking about it?

What about burning oil affecting catalytic converters? I know on older converters oil burning could result in filter backup issue. Love the videos man. Home mechanic here myself. Used to be a marine diesel mechanic.

Oil burning GM engines (with bad rings) have tended to destroy the cat converters over time. Had to replace one at 120K miles in a 1 quart burning GM 4-cyl 2.5L engine. Oil burning GM engines are a concern!

I drive the same truck but with a utility bed. My boss bought it for me to use for work. It does has the same big motor in it, along with the towing gears. But I do have two problems with this truck. First, it gets between 10-12 MPG. I rarely get 14MPG. I alway fill it up with gasoline when the fuel gauge get half way. Second is the hood is not easily to grab to close with. It is way up there, I have to grab a small block or step ladder just to close the hood. Other then than, no problems with yet.

Thanks great review. Between this one and the Ford 6.8L V8 Gas, which one would you go with? Thanks!

My 2020 has no issues and is a beast compared to the 6.0 I had before and the 6.6 gets better fuel mileage running around and towing-same gear ratio.
@BetaRacer24 Жыл бұрын
The 6.0 had a 4.10

I'm surprised they haven't found a way to get better MPG. My 2001 4x4 Silverado with the 8.1L gets 12mpg all day long. Doesn't use quite as much oil either. Guess Ill just keep driving it.

Bought my 2500 HD new last year, just hit 13 k miles, 15.3 mpg. I just changed oil , measured what I drained out ,level was down 1 pint, thats with 3600 miles on that oil. Pretty normal I would say.
