The same exact thing happened with my Hummer H3, you saved me from buying and installing a new parking brake assembly unit, I walked out to my Hummer, opened the door, shined a flash light under the dash, found the little lever and BAM! it works!!!! took me 3 minutes total, a huge THANK YOU! TOM.

I am eternally grateful for your video, replaced the rear shoes(140k on original), lubed up the parts and cables, and still the parking brake wouldnt set. Today I unbolted the emergency assembly, and mostly unbolted the brake pedal bracket, then watched your video to figure out how to remove the brake plunger clip. After watching your video I reached up there and also tried w a screwdriver(couldn't see it). After feeling up there again it seemed the little lever piece was not in that stuck position you described so I pressed the parking pedal and it holds again, cant believe it! Saved me alot of extra work removing and buying another mechanism, thanks so much!!

This fixed the parking brake on my 2012 Canyon. It's a stupid failure but this video makes it an easy fix. If this video didn't exist I'd needlessly have the ratchet assembly out to fix it. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

WOW, you saved me money and time. fixed mine in 5 seconds, I shoved a flat screwdriver in that area where the spring got jammed and just like that it sprung back into place and my parking park worked. thank you for your time and knowledge - i have a 2006 Chevy Colorado

My 2008 Colorado parking brake also would not set, I suffered through 1 year of not having the use of the parking brake, then I watched your video, checked mine and saw that the spring was stuck as you described. MY Colorado is an automatic, so was able to get at it with out removing anything, I sprayed it with penetrating oil and using a screwdriver, was able to get the spring to snap back into place. I am very grateful for you taking the time to make this video, THANK YOU!!

THANK YOU! I have a 2007 Colorado that had the same problem. I was able to release the stuck spring with my finger as you described without taking the emergency brake out of the truck. No luck trying to snip the end off or bending it with the emergency brake still installed (even without a clutch pedal), so I just smeared some grease on the brake frame where it was catching. A long shot, I know, but hey, this has only happened once in 122000 miles (I'm the original owner)!

Fixed my emergency brake on my 2012 gmc canyon. I had the same problem. However I didn't take it apart. The spring on mine is a coil spring. I was able to reach in with a small pair of vice grip needle nose pliers and get hold of the tip of the spring. I then bent it back so the tip of the spring wouldn't snag. It is working now. Thank you for this video. Big help.

Yup just had the same problem on my 04 colorado. Found it the hard way. I'd also just like to point out that it is possible to remove the cable from the pedal without cutting or disconnecting it from the bottom. You do have to unhook it by the tension adjustment "thingy" then remove the pedal bracket from its fasteners and push the cable and it will form a "U" shape kind of and then you are able to unhook it. Thanks for the video.

Hi Tom. I simply did a search for this exact problem on my 07 Colorado on KZbin. This has been ongoing for a few months and I've merely been using the 1st gear as my parking brake. I was all set to hire a mechanic to fix this until today. Once I saw your video, I was able to go deep into the brake mechanism and un-stick the spring as you suggested -WITHOUT REMOVING A SINGLE PART OR BOLT. A 5-minute quick fix and the brake works again as designed. I added a small amount of lithium lubricant to the hang-up area so as to avoid a repeat problem. Thanks to you and your 3 minute video, I'm sure I saved hundreds of $$. Thank you for having the thought to present this to the world. You are the man! NOTE: Special thanks to my pal Tom Mavritsakis without whose help, the repair could not be done. Thanks Mav!

Hi. ReWatched this because my 07 Colorado had this exact problem.. again. It was such a pain to just reach inside to reset the stuck spring lever, I removed my lower dash panel and more or less reached right in to free the lever. To remove the panel- Open driver door. Remove one Phillips screw from the plastic cover that covers the whole knee-area. This is on the SIDE of the dash panel and the driver door, when closed, kisses that area. There are also two Phillips that are found under the plastic hood release lever. (Actually, I didn’t even have to remove these and I just moved the panel enough to reach in.) once I partially removed the plastic trim panel, I reached right In and quickly released it. Didn’t have to throw my back out!

You Rock!! I just stumbled across this video. I bought my 04 Colorado a couple of years ago. The E-Brake pedal wouldn't stay down. After looking at the work involved in pulling the pedal assembly out to look for the problem, I changed my mind. The truck is an automatic, so no big deal. Well, your video helped me fix the problem in less time than it took for me to walk out to my truck!! Thanks!!

Thanks alot for the video, it was a great help! My 2009 had the issue twice so far, 1st time it cleared by itself because I had the assembly loose and I couldn't tell what cleated it. This time I didn't loosen anything but was able to clear it by running a screwdriver up around the top side of the pivot kinda where your video showed, it finally cleared and will engage again. Sprayed silicon lube up around there, time will tell if it helps. Anyway, thanks again!!
