There’s a guy who designed a “ kit “ for this fix. I think he does some KZbin videos under the name Dre Dan??? He has a link to the PVC fix kit in the description on one of his videos. My “ issue “ is that I live in Canada so getting some stuff from the USA is harder. It’s puzzling to me that GM has an engine produced from around 2011-2019 that has such a common issue and no one has sued them or they haven’t provided a fix under a “ Bulletin “ to fix this. Then there’s the almost 100% of vehicles problems with the oil feed line to the turbo gumming up because of the heat from the exhaust manifold which results in turbo failure. At least that one is a relatively easy fix. The other pretty much 100% problem is the leaking from the coolant line to turbo that has a partial rubber section that leaks after a few years. All these issues could have been fixed by GM between 20011-2019 with very little effort.

Yep Andrei runs the Dre Dan channel. He's been very active in the Cruze community coming up with a variety of repairs, modifications, and tools to maintain these vehicles. I believe there are multiple bulletins out there addressing the issues, but no recalls since GM provided a fix of thier own. Unfortunately this "fix" is to throw parts at the car and hope it sticks long enough for the customer to trade in. Sad really, nice cars but they aren't built to last anymore

Currently modding the mod to shave down brass nut that comes with the kit as it's about 1/16 too wide for the opening. Kinda frustrating. Really happy there's a fix, but watching you knstall with ease and having to fight something that's already been a royal pain in the ass is not helping. Taking a screwdriver to the inner plastic to remove a bit is not an option. Thank God for the vice and the belt sander with 80 grit sand belt that I already had.

Pcv valve can temporarily pacify the real problem that's the check valve in intake . The valve cover is quick to replace but intake takes a bit of time to replace. You can do the modification to intake to save money and time !
@anubaral

Why have the hose return to the intake? Why not let him dangling on the outside of the engine? Will it pull air through that hose?
@meso281

The reason it fails is because of the intake manifold its messing the plastic check vavle. Doorman did a video on why the valve cover fails. They sell a OEM fix (intake manifold) that will keep the vavle cover (pcv) from popping. I replaced mines and have not replace once since then almost 2 years now. But im sure the cover will get old and need replacing one day again but so far so good.

I did this mod and dont like the connection with the rubber gasket at the manifold there is no actual seal between either the outer brass fitting and washer or the inner brass bolt and its washer only between the inner washer and the manifold so i opted to add a small amount of rtv between all components. Also the fact that the new pcv or check valve now lives under the manifold it is not easily serviceable it might be considered to flip the throttle body adapter and run a longer hose up through the manifold so the check valve lives on top and could be replaced. I used the kit that tee's into the upper tube and didnt use the throttle body adapter but the same applies i wish i had added another barb not included in my kit and located the check above the manifold.

Do you have any clue if doing this would void any warranty? I have a 2015 sonic with an extended warranty. It runs ok, but its been gradually starting to leak from almost every oil seal its got. The valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, crankshaft seal, and camshaft seals have all been replaced and the oil cooler seal, oil cap seal, and valve cover gasket (again) are all leaking/seeping currently (there is also some oil that has seeped out of the turbo intercooler tube which suggests the turbo seals are leaking too). The orange check valve in the intake is present and as i said before the cars runs ok. I have the v1 kit, throttle body spacer, and new valve cover in my posession already, but i was just wondering if its worth doing all this work just yet or just wait till the check valve goes away on its own?
@jungleking007Channel
@jungleking007Channel 3 жыл бұрын
Hard to say, depends on the dealership that would perform the warranty service work. the PCV kit shown in this video is technically not a sanctioned Chevrolet repair so could fall under the definition of an engine modification. However, I would argue it fixed an ongoing issue GM failed to warranty correctly in the first place. If it were me, I would go ahead with the repair simply for convenience. if It's been shown to fix an ongoing issue, it should help reduce or eliminate a warranty trip to the dealer. If I'm not mistaken the burden of proof lies with the dealer/manufacturer to prove what caused the need to warranty a certain part in the first place. (Disclaimer: not a lawyer or ASE certified mechanic, always consult vehicle literature or manufacturer/dealer directly for proper guidance. Remember, I'm just a guy on KZbin...)

Not knowing what other techs did with this car, not to mention what shes spent on it with me, Im thinking of not bothering with the PCV system until there is a pressed reason to do so. Any thoughts?

This is the 3rd time I am fixing this problem. I had a new turbo last summer. I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze LTZ. I started having trouble since about 75000 miles. I absolutely can not wait to get another car. I am stuck with it because I owe too much. I got it with less than 30000 miles in 2016. I am a social worker and I used my car for work on the past. But this PCV crap happens every 1.5 to 2 years. I joke that I need a very large cliff to push this car over. I am totally joking btw.

Just curious how long the bypass works, I have around 77K miles on my cruze and had to replace the diaphragm and check valve already, if the bypass removed this concern I am in (after my manufacturer extended warranty is out at 126K miles).

Should work for the life of the car after install as long as it's maintained. I've had no issues since install. Think I'm over 70k now, but haven't driven in a couple days to remember the current mileage. Haven't been commuting as much recently, so can't really comment much on daily driving use at this time.

Hey man, I'm planning to do this to my wifes car. I know there could be excessive vacuum/suction with pcv issues. Would it cause the plastic intake pipe(directly after air filter obx/maf) to collapse under extreme suction? Thanks
@jungleking007Channel
@jungleking007Channel 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think so. There isn't enough vacuum created or volume pulled to allow that to happen in these cars. Need more cylinders and a bigger turbo for that to possibly happen!

I have this problem for the 3rd time since buying my 2012 Chevy Cruze in 2016. 1st time I just replaced the valve cover and it was fine. The 2nd time I did both intake manifold and valve cover. Not sure if I should do that again this time around. I really hate this damn car. This is my 4th and last Chevy. I also had a new turbo put in it last year. Mine is the 1.4 L turbo LTZ model.

*my 2016 is technically a gen2, it was a PCV issue but it's not the same repair as a gen1. Their are two PCV valves on the gen2 remove the plastic valve cover. One will be on the front of the valve cover by the turbo (PN 12665644), and another on the back side of the valve cover (PN 12685407). The hose will have to be replaced also (PN 12673862). Their is a third connection on the intake tube going from the filter to the turbo, this should be cleaned up and can be reused, it's just a plastic box. ***the screws on the PCV's are some sort of anti tamper screw that you won't be able to get off with any type of bit I was able to find. I was able to use a pair of channel lock pliers to remove the screws without any drilling or cutting. On the replacement parts do yourself a favor and replace those screws the replacement parts came with, with M6-1.0 x 30mm bolts and a washer (or use a flanged bolt). The bolts on the new part will simply push out. Hope that helps any gen2 owner.

I'm still here. Life has gotten in the way of personal content creation so I haven't been able to post anything. As for the kits, Think he's on V3.4 now. He still offers the version in this video, but I can't speak for the most current design. Reviews state it's not very difficult to install and so far little to no issues. I'd check out his website for more details. Thanks!

I just replaced this in my 2012 cruze the other day and the 2 holes in the timing chain cover are stripped. Was told the only thing I can do is to replace the whole timing chain cover, otherwise it will continue to leak oil because the bolts won't tighten down,
@JOHNHOOK1966
@JOHNHOOK1966 3 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue with my 2014 Cruze camshaft cover. The three holes on the left side (near timing chain) were stripped and couldn't be torqued down. I purchased 50MM M6 bolts 8.8 grade from Home Depot, pulled the black sleeves out of the cover that were around the 3 existing bolts and replaced them with the new / longer M6 bolts and it worked like a charm. The holes / threading go deaper than the GM provided bolts so if you get longer ones, you can tighten it down with no problems. I blame the last mechanic who replaced that camshaft cover. They used power tools instead of hand tools to tighten those bolts and stripped the inside threading. Hope this helps anyone who is having this same issue.
@sesapup
@sesapup 2 жыл бұрын
You can use helicoils to fix the problem, M10 I believe. For ~$30, the Fix-A-Thread kit at auto parts store comes with everything except the drill bit. I used a 1/4 in this application. Once done, just make sure you don't torque those bolts no more than the 71 in/lbs called for in the book.

My 2012 cruze, loses power as I go up hill, I did change the Pcv cover couple years ago, now I have the check engine light on again, I'd tried everything else still not working properly, could it be the Pcv cover again?

YES. I bought my Cruze Eco 1.4 turbo brand new in 2011 (2012 model). So far I have had to replace the valve cover three times due to the PCV issue, and it is just beginning to run rough again so I'll probably replace it again this year. If yours is losing power pretty badly and it's the 1.4 turbo, go have your turbo checked out. Ours went out last year and we paid $1100 to have the turbo fixed. Good luck with yours.

If you disconnect the sensor while the battery is still hooked up it will throw a code. Hook up scanner make sure it’s a code to do with that particular sensor if it is clear the code and you should be fine. If there’s something wrong the check engine light will come back on.

Let your car sit for a bit. Usually once engine is cool, pressure should have dissipated enough. However shouldn't be a concern for this repair since you are not diconnecting the fuel line to the rail.

Question: I have a 2020 Chevy Sonic 1.4 Lt. It does not have a turbo. Would the fix for the intake manifold described also work on my Sonic? Also, what is the aluminum spacer on the intake for?

Yes. I also have a sonic. 2015 but it is a turbo 1.4L. But If you click the link to the fox kit you can see the models this kit works on and both of ours are included.
@classydarktoys5731
@classydarktoys5731 Жыл бұрын
Actually I’m sorry I just double checked yours is a 2020.. so I’m not sure. The best way to find out is to see if the intake manifold is the same as the 2012-2015 ones. If they are the same part, then yes this will work exactly the same. You can go to eBay, and find a 2015 Chevy 1.4l intake manifold and there is an option to see if it will fit your vehicle in your “garage”. Once you type in the 2015 intake manifold you should see an option that says, “see if this fits my vehicle”. From there you simply put in the year, make and model and it will tell you if it fits on your make and model or not. If it does, then the answer is absolutely yes because the parts are exactly the same. If not, then unfortunately this probably won’t work but you can still visit the website where these are available and see if one of the other kits will work for yours. But I’d say it will work. I doubt they changed this part on the 2020 models and the turbo doesn’t matter so long as the manifold is the same. I hope this helps. I’m not a mechanic but I know a lot about parts for these models as I’ve been doing research on them for months to find out exactly why I’m getting a P2090 code. Most people think it’s a solenoid issue in the crankshaft timing system but I actually had a vacuum leak from my PCV system and could not find the part to fix it besides the valve cover which would just break again within a few months if I am lucky. So instead I am just going to do this process and bypass the entire thing, then replace the cover still just to make sure the intake valve on the cover is working properly and hopefully that will clear my code.

Chevy never put a 1.4L non-turbo on the Sonic. The non-turbo is a 1.8L engine the only model they had in 2020 the is a 1.4 L non-turbo is on the Spark which is the LV7 engine.
