I followed the video and was able to replace the starter on my farm truck, much to my surprise. Not bad for 61 yr old granny at 5’2” and 110 lbs. The worst part was installing it in the dark in my woods where it broke down, the old rust falling in my face and trying to hold and wire the 20 lb part lying on my back. Thanks for showing me the way beyond changing my own oil.

I like the way you did this. One guy pulled the tire and fender well out to get access to wires on starter. If I have to I will. Just less I will have to put back together.

Just did this in my 91 K1500 today, one thing I found was that the main starter wire at the starter was held on with a 17mm nut instead of a 13. The new starter also used a 17. I had replaced this starter once before with one from NAPA (lifetime warranty!) so maybe OEM used a 13mm

FYI if you have to do this in the yard etc you can jack up the truck from the passenger side tire jack point and it really helps, just make sure you put something good and sturdy under the jack so it doesn't sink.

On my truck there is no heatshield and one of the mounting bolts has a huge ground strap on it attached to the frame. Thank you for this video i could not remember if that wire from the main body went on the lug or not and you really helped me out there.

Okay, let me just start by saying that I'm glad you're doing this video as it will prove to be somewhat helpful to some people. That said you are missing a TON of important details! First and most importantly the YEAR of your truck! This tells everyone if it's OBS or NBS and narrows down just how accurate or inaccurate the information your giving will be compared to their car. I'll be honest I thought since you're talking about a Chevy K1500 the information and tools would be at least close to what I would need for my 1993 GMC K1500 5.7L V8 with automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive (all the details Auto Zone needed to get the right starter). Your socket sizes were NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!
@ChelszH2 жыл бұрын
I do have the year of the truck in the description. Also, bolt sizes vary as these trucks are old and sometimes people replace bolts and things so you can never be sure if yours are going to be the same. Good luck on your install. 🤙🏼

Where do those 2 long bolts going thru the starter bolt into? Right into the engine block? Or into the transmission? The side starter bold had broken off when the mechanic was taking the starter out. He said they didn't have the tool(s) to reach it or get it out. It broke off with a small amount protruding.

I have a 1992 K1500 with a manual transmission. The slave cylinder is below the starter motor and gets in the way of dropping out the starter. Do you have any suggestions?
@MikeFromCanadaEh4 ай бұрын
I did my 94 K1500 20 yrs ago with manual transmission. the hydrraulic line runs under the starter also. think there were two nuts/bolts that held the slave on. it will come off and then just move it into a position not under the starter.
@SummitScene4 ай бұрын
@@MikeFromCanadaEh Thank you for getting back to me. I did just what you suggested. I removed the slave cylinder with the hydraulic line still attached. There was enough flex to the hydraulic line that I could push the slave cylinder assembly to the side. Then I used some string to tie it against the truck frame where it was out of the way and afforded me plenty of access to work on the starter.

I have a 1996 gmc suburban that wont start. It sounds like grinding noises from the motor. It used to be able to start. Now it doesn't for sure. I was told, it could be either the starter, or fuel pump. As the fuel gage stopped displayi ng the correct amount of fuel. Or maybe both?

I recently installed a new starter. The problem is the starter is free spinning. I've changed the battery terminals and installed a new battery. When I hooked up the new terminals to the battery. The starter is not engaging. What could be the problem.
@jerrybenson3 жыл бұрын
You need a new starter. The gear you see on the starter is NOT engaged to the engine flywheel until the starter starts to spin. Thus sliding into the flywheel gear. Yours is not sliding forward into the flywheel gear.

The other day I went out to my truck and I hit the key to start it and it went *click*. When we got back we threw it on the battery charger because the voltage gauge was down and then I tried starting it again. Then it again went *click* so then we determined it was likely the starter
