nice project, i love the fact its a regular cab. i think you may find when its all coming together the drive shaft still wont be exactly where you want it... i did a s10 v8 conversion back in 1991 and had to get the driveshaft lengthened 3/4 of an inch and at the same time, cleaned, balanced, painted and with new universals professionally installed made the drive train super smooth and the truck loved to hit 7 thousand rpm while doing burnouts thanks to the 4.10 gears
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Cool story! Sounds like it was a fun project. I'm thinking this drive shaft should be fine since I'm pretty much making the frame the same as a short bed and the shaft is from a short bed, but well see. I'm getting reading to put new u-joints in the drive shaft and paint it soon, too. It'd be nice to have it balanced. I'll see if I have vibrations first. I had a weird vibration already, that I assumed was the dive shaft.

I had a Suburban that was trashed with nasty shit in the interior.... I used Simple Green (not diluted) to clean the cloth. Looked amazing when I was finished and smelled great. Sprayed it on, wiped it in with a gloved hand/light brush, and scrubbed clean with a damp rag. One the rag was dirty I rinsed it with a water hose and rung it out. Done that 2 or 3 times to each 2foot by 2foot area. I might still have some before and after shots if you wanted to see.
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Very nice! Thanks for sharing the tip. Im sure it worked well, but I have a slightly negative memory with Simple Green that kinda keeps me away from it. It's good stuff. Its just that they made us use that crap all the time in Marine Corps boot camp and .... well yea. The smell doesnt remind me of lovely flowers. lol I wound up using stuff called "Odor Ban" and I think that I like it. Not only does it disinfect, but it smells pretty dang good too. The vinegar did a great job cleaning and disenfecting the seats though. I just wanted to make sure the vinegar smell was gone.

Hey Gear, do the '14-16 jump seat. Much better and comfy. Phone sits in the little shallow cubby hole perfect and 3 cup holders. With a nice center console. Did this swap with a buddy. Total was 125: 100 for seat 22 for bracket and 3 for entrance to yard
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
You know what, you're right. I've got the Tahoe jump seat in it right now and I really do like it. Not only does it have the nice cup holders, but the awesome huge storage space under the bottom of the seat too. Love it. I'll jus stay with it. But I've got mine just wedged in there right now, not bolted down. I figured that I'll need to weld some feet onto it. What bracket did you say you bought to make it fit?
@CrimsonHawk097 жыл бұрын
AGearHead4Life I used one from a 99-02 silverado like my truck had with original console. but any other tahoe or burb bracket with console should fit from 00-06 and gmc or chevy 07 classic down that came with console. And i mean console not the jump seat. FYI, I have an 08 rear bench seat in mine me and friend modified using the left bracket from original and putting it on new one. Fits perfect just a tad longer on the leg but my 240ibs butt still fits lol

Those seats at the beginning of the video in the background are the ones that come in 99+ Ext cab trucks and Tahoes. Those are whats going into the Vandal. I havent put them in a 88-98 yet, so I couldn't tell ya. But they do make a very similar seat that is made for a 88-98. Theyre the ones that I put into my 87 Chevy truck. They're called a 60/40 split bench with a folding console. They can be hard to find, but theyre some of my most favorite seats out there. I have an install video of putting them in my C10. I have heard that those are the same. Someone commented that as I was doing this project. My problem was that I had to get the vehicle gone due to HOA and they were pretty rusty anyway. Looking back, I probably should have found a way to take them off anyway. It would make things easier having those available, unless one plans to use drop hangers anyway.
@sbush71187 жыл бұрын
the power accessories in the doors and seats should just plug into the distribution blocks under the dash. From there you might need to make sure you have fuses in their proper locations on the fuse box, but everything should run as intended. (Provided they ran properly in the GMC)
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
That is great to hear! I was hoping that it'd work that easy, but wasnt sure. I mean, I could see all of those spots are on my basic work truck just waiting for a plug. Even the cruise control pigtail is under the hood and capped off from the factory. I'm just wondering if I'm going to have to change out the BCM and sync it in or anything. I figure that I'll plug it in and see first.
@sbush71187 жыл бұрын
don't think they required any BCM change in that generation. GM didn't do much like that till the 07+body styles. I'm thinking worst case scenario, maybe disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it again. (which is just about always done anytime you're swapping any parts with plugs, or that require wiring. If you really get stuck there are several forums with tons of info. I'm a member at FullSizeChevy and GMFullsize..

But you can get vehicle specific information from internet forums that focus on your type of vehicle. Allen said it right. Getting a whole donor truck is usually the best way to go and come out cheaper. Especially if you sell parts off of it.

Why didn't u cut the back half of the frame for your conversion. it has all the part from the suspension is different from the long bed.
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
I was informed of that as I was stripping it down, but I didn't for a few reasons. One, because I felt making use of what I have on the long bed would be more applicable to others looking into doing this. Two, That frame was pretty rust and nasty from the salt up north. Three, I didn't have much time to pick things off of that truck. I had to have it gone quickly. I can't have trucks stripped down in this neighborhood.

The short bed box doesn't look too bad with the rust but you obviously have a better look at it from where you are. I don't think that is something you cant fix. I prefer the look of the short bed myself and if you get all those parts on there you may have one of the best daily drivers out there, plus the top will look pretty nice on that too!
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Nah, you're right, the rust isn't too bad. Plus, I actually kinda want this truck to look rough. I miss how my first 84 C10 was, no paint and lots of primer spots. It was great not having to worry about scratching your paint, where you parked or anything. Plus people would just get out of your way because they were afraid you were going to hit them or something. lol The would dare try to push you out of a lane because they knew that you didn't car about the paint as much as they cared about theirs. lol
@cw2lido7 жыл бұрын
Do they push bars for a truck? You put that on the front and your truck will look mean and I would for sure get the heck out of the way! Wait a minute, I have a CTS , just try to keep up with me! Kidding! I am going to start looking for a 98-02 Camaro/Firebird so I can do my own LS swap! I know I would need a different intake but so many options!
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
lol A push bar would be good for this area also because people hit deer all the time here. It seems like my mom hits one every year. Good luck on the LS hunt!
@cw2lido7 жыл бұрын
I will be on the look out for a rolling chassis and then start from there. I know I could just buy one with a LS in it already but what fun is that? There are also the kids who always ask or make the statement I am gonna do a V6 to V8 swap, well as long as their pocket book is deep and or they are committed then more power to them. After watching your videos its been a dream to attend LS Fest and BUILD something with my wife and sons. Truck wise I would need something old with an extended cab and well they really did not make them unless I want an old Suburban (wife has a 2015) or a Carryall or a crew cab truck. Can't really slam those and the goal will be to do this with a budget in mind. I figured why not Camaro/Firebird since the parts will be easy to find at a local auto recycling center. Thanks for posting the video, I needed a pick me up after the week I have had!
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Sorry you had a rough week man. Glad the video helped chill. From what you described you want the project for, I'd want to chose either the 73-87 quad cab or suburban. I think that'd be cool. I've seen a couple quad cabs for sale online lately too.

Use impact adapters Bro. And all impact sockets too for that matter. That way it won't happen to you again even if it's 3/8 sockets.
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. I'll likely test out the limits of a harbor freight impact adapter first. Only negative on using impact sockets too, is the amount of space that I have in this little portable junk yard tool box, but I may be able to make that work. At least use impact sockets for the larger sockets, like the 18mm in this video.
@BigJoehunts7 жыл бұрын
If you do try sockets and adapters make sure they say "CR-MO" And not "CR-V". That stands for chromoly and chrome vanadium. Of the two chromoly is way stronger is what impact materials are typically made of. They are more expensive but harbor freight does carry CR-V impact stuff and its generally the same stuff with just "impact" thrown in front of the name. Just a quick tip and i may not have spelled that right but just keep in mind. Love your videos mark!

@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Thank you RangRayy! Thats it man. I big on spreading the motivation and making what you want happen. Mainly just making it a short bed because its a task of something I've wanted to accomplish for a while now. It's actually more useful as a long bed for what I'm using it for. I just want the experience. lol It's a common want. Short beds look more sporty and are more valuable, besides as a work truck. So you can find long beds much cheaper and easier. I'll likely do a square body one day too.
@RangRayy7 жыл бұрын
That's what I was figuring. Just cause you know? I have an '87 long bed and I love it. Not too many people mod them and are mainly work tucks like you said which is why I am drawn to mine. Will help stand out more in my opinion. The guys I work with we follow you and talk about what you're doing and I gotta tell ya man, you're a true inspiration.
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Thank you brotha! That means a lot man. Y'all get any AG4L decals yet? Message me here on YT your address and I'll send y'all some. Yea, a long bed can be just fine. It all depends on the project and what you, the owner, likes. If I hadn't come across this parts donor truck, I wouldn't be cutting this truck down right now. It better serves its purpose for me as a long bed. I hauled off a bunch of crap that I had from tearing down a pop up camper and that long bed did the job well. When I have a long bed though, I like to either raise or lower them. I also like to put a tool box in the bed to help it not look so long/unproportional. Long bed 4x4 look very fitting also.

Sorry man! That truck was hauled off to the scrap yard that same week. I had to have it gone. Neighborhood HOA wont all me to do this kind of work around here. I need to hurry up and a place to set up my shop.

i feel like u got to ask this is the turbo camaro going to be done by October?
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
That is a great question. It's very possible. That'd all depend on what other opportunities possibly jump in front of me before then. I mean, this parts truck was given to me. I could pass that up, but I also had to do something with it quickly and get the remains out of the yard. The Camaro is close and I sure hope that it is done before October. I would be sweet to two it up to LS Fest with the Vandal.

I wish! That's another thing that we've been doing. Driving around and looking at land to set up shop and home on. I need to find something quick. It's holding me back from being able to do more.

Are u done with the c10 for now
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
I dont know if I'll use the word done, but yea, it'll be on pause for a while. Eventually, once I get a place to live, I'll pull the bed off of it and finish the Blazer tank setup. I never ran the fuel lines or filler neck to it.

what alarm/auto start do u have?
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Viper 5806v and I really like it. If you can figure it out yourself, you can get it done pretty cheap, but if you have to have it installed it's not cheap at all. On an old square body truck, the alarm with remote start wouldn't be too hard, but on these newer truck that have to have a module to bypass the factory trucks alarm, makes its little more challenging because you'll need special tools to program those modules. I said screw it and bought the tool. Also, they dont make the install information easily available. they just point you towards a professional installer to have it done. I had to make an account on their website and pretty much act like an installer to get all the info that I needed. It was crazy. Alarms didn't use to be so secrete ten years ago.

I broke two adapters and a ratchet and stripped an 18mm socket all on the first caliper bracket bolt on my Silverado before I too had to go buy and 18mm 1/2 inch socket... Jesus.

@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Not sure of the years, but they were known as the Texas edition 20's on NBS or NNBS trucks.

too many projects.... I feel you
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I use to be able to keep it under control. I'm not sure what happened. I think a big part of it is when I started videoing it. That greatly slows down every project. It takes easily four times as long to do a project when you video it. Setting up camera, changing batteries, moving camera and setting up again, naration and of course the average 10 hours of video editing after each one.

you do a pretty damn great job recording and explaining things... I think I spent more time answering question on KZbin, FB, Instagram. then I did building my Supercharged 3.8l 4rth gen camaro then I did building it....lol

I would have if I hadn't already hauled the truck off to the scrap yard. Thats what I was mentioning in the video. I wish I had a place to keep it so that I could salvage parts off of it for others and myself as needed, but I can't keep it here and had to make it disappear quickly. Im still hunting for a place to setup shop and just borrowing space right now. So I can't have much stuff here.

I'm sure you've seen this series: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWrdqmNuptiUns0 Not sure how much help it would be? Different frame? Similar process? I'm curious to see your work!
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Nah, I hadn't seen that yet. I'll check it out. Yea, much different frame, but should still be a good watch.
@AGearHead4Life7 жыл бұрын
ah yea, that is a good series. See, that is how I was expecting to do this truck. Then I was informed of the difference in this frame. The front and rear sections of this frame are slipped on and welded to a center frame section. So you can basically pick one of the factory weld points, grind the welds off, slide it forward and weld it back. The problem is that it's the front weld joint under the cab that is preferred. I'm going to do some thinking and hopefully do it another way, without removing the cab.
