Love your work as always Austin. That said, NO, NO,NO, NO, NO on your brake pad prices. Sounds like dealership pricing? Buy brake pads from a source like RockAuto. OEM ceramic pads for the C8 are less than $600 for all 4 corners at RockAuto. My '17 CTS-V needed new rotors and pads last month and the dealership quoted me $2970 with taxes and installation. I bought the OEM Brembo rotors and pads for all four corners for $1300 and change with shipping from RockAuto. With the use of a QuickJack it was an easy job :)

I would like to stay naturally aspirated when I finally get mine and all the talk right now is twin turbos or headers and exhaust. But what about just a heads/cam combo like the "Hot Cam" of old? For the base C8, for me, it's all about road performance and not just the quarter mile.

Don't put turbos on it until people figure out how to tune it. GM still hasn't released any tuning software for it.
@cassiespencer6134
@cassiespencer6134 4 жыл бұрын
It’s not that simple. First of all GM's Global Diagnostic System version 2 software is required. And that requires a license from GM in order to access their TIS2Web site which must be done at least once a month, which requires a yearly subscription, in order to download the latest version which is a PC based application. Then, using the GM MDI2 (Multiple Diagnostic Interface version 2), a PC is connected to the vehicle in order to update the vehicles computer.

Great content as always digging into the actual maintenance was great! Stick to your own unique format that's worked so well for you. Don't be like the rest w/crazy major mods(like turbos/superchargers) that void your warranty, could screw it up, & will make your MPG nosedive from 30 to 20. For 150 hp? Besides, you're in the unique position of clearly showing on track for most part it doesn't need it...but smaller stuff go for it! Proper grille mesh installation like Porsche GT cars to protect those radiators? Larger round exhaust tips to replace the square ones? Maybe look into aftermkt brake pads for next time??? LOTS of unique stuff to do & stay a cut above the rest!

Definitely headers, sports cats. Aftermarket exhaust if not going to turbocharge (weighs less). If turbocharging, get LMR to do it. They are getting the clutch pack upgraded for streetspeed717 along with beefier pistons for the increased hp. Emelia said GM informed her the C8's pistons and transmission are treated for 660hp. Great video!

From what you said, the brake pads are bespoke, and cannot take advantage ( yet ) of economy of scale. Leave the engine stock but put on an aftermarket exhaust. In fact keep changing out exhausts until you find the one you like the most for sound & HP / torque increases.. Right now I believe Hennessey's has the biggest claimed DYNO'd increase of 21hp. Use the same scenario with ground effects / wings packages.

I know you changed the camber on the wheels to the track specs; so, I was curious whether you thought this was causing your tires to wear more quickly. It didn't sound like you noticed anything in that regard, but people thinking about doing this, too, might want to know what your experience has been. It seems like this could be a downside to setting the car up for occasional tracking but still wanting to use the car as a daily driver.

Austin, I'd like to see you leave the super/turbo charging to the dozens of other YT'ers out there. Instead, I'd like to see you play around with what the car already comes with, because that's within the comfort zone of a bunch of owners. Also, on the subject of brake pads, I expect the aftermarket (KNS brakes comes to mind) will have pads that are much more in line with other Brembo systems. I took delivery of VIN 5418 on 8-6-2020 only 13 months after I put a down payment. I masked, primed and painted the engine cover and it came out Torch Red, with aluminum Corvette Inserts and and detailed painted C8 V badge at the front of the cover. It cost two cans of paint and roll of blue masking tape and about 3 hours of my life. There might be a time I wish I still had that 3 hours some day but if I am asleep when I go I won't miss the 3 hours! The only other mod are a pair of rock guards I fabricated so the the first out of pocket expense isn't going to be AC condensers. The mesh used looks alot like the mesh over to he factory exhaust in back. The brake pads are going to last on my C8 longer then yours and some tree hugger company in middle America will be selling a copper free replacement the when my brakes are due,. DOT ceritfied, for allot less then the current replacement pads!

Regarding the cost of parts, Corvette has always charged more for parts than similar parts for cars like Camaro's, Mustang, etc...in my opinion it is how they justify the initial performance/price index that Corvette is famous for. They make an additional profit in incidentals. Genuine GM parts for the Corvette are always more costly than similar parts for other GM vehicles. Most people will buy genuine GM parts, especially within the warranty period, even if aftermarket parts are available at a discounted price fearing they may void their warranty if something happens during the warranty and aftermarket parts are discovered on the Corvette.

Then what happens to the half shaft/s? Yeah, it/they may become the next weakest link/s in the chain so to speak and thus the next thing/s to break. Remember, when the tires are spinning the half shafts are spinning as well. However, when the tires grip they stop turning for a very brief period of time. And as a result, so do the half shafts. Except tires are made of rubber and are flexible. Hence they can absorb that energy without much harm. Output shafts however may not be able to withstand such torsional fatigue and may fracture. So simply improve them, right? Of course. And then the next weakest link will fail. The fact is, cars are designed to meet certain standards and performance criteria, as is each individual part which comprises said car. So by improving or "strengthening" one part it may impart any increased stresses to what which it's connected. Hence, it too may need to be re-designed. And so on and so forth,

Ok, that is insane cost for brake pads. Seriously. The aftermarket will kill GM on parts. I have to say, I'm not really feeling what I have seen so far in twin turbo builds. Not for the base model. I honestly think going with a decent sized SC and maybe cam/heads/exhaust will be the ticket. The base model doesn't need a ton of power to be a street beast.
