Was looking at this catch can a couple of weeks ago and had issue getting the order to go through. I finally saw your video when it hit and ordered it and it's on its way, minus the 10% discount. I came back to your channel to see if you had a discount code but didn't see it so I went ahead and clicked to finalize the payment. Oh well, win some and loose some. Can't wait to get it as I've always ran cans on my Camaro's. Kinda wish that hose with the check valve was shorter as not to run forward and then back to the can to connect. Being that the made this setup specifically for the C8, I wonder why such a long hose for such a short distance?
@HorsePowerObsessed4 жыл бұрын
That one I'm not sure of, it could be a little shorter but with the check valve it kind of stiffens up the hose so it may have to be longer to achieve a certain bend?

Hi, thanks to your video, I purchased a UPR catch can. Its been installed for slightly less than a week (around 150 miles). Today I checked the can, and it has collected about a teaspoon of oil inside the can. So I "think" the can is working. Reason why I said "think"...I also pulled the hoses off near the can to see if there is evidence of oil...on the inlet to the can (the hose that connects to the PVC line towards the front of the engine) - that appears bone dry. On the outlet from the can (hose that connects to the intake), that appears slightly moist with oil. I also bought the option for a valve as well on that hose. I would have thought the evidence of oil would be the opposite of what I experienced. Have you had the chance to check your catch can? And if so, do the hoses appear moist with oil similar to what mine shows???

Great Job with the install , but I would do just one extra thing . The bolt that is fastening to the engine bay frame and then to the base anchor to the Catch Can itself , that bolt should get a little loctite , blue color will due , orange color to be sure . You don't want vibration loosening your bolt and the catch can falling into the engine bay while driving . The Vette is looking great !

It has been known to happen from time to time with the car sucking unmetered air back through the PCV system so to prevent that from even being a possibility a check valve is put in. Probably not 100% necessary, but why not have that extra bit of peace of mind?

I totally agree that a catch can is required on a DI engine as I have one on my C7 and plan on purchasing one for my C8 which I take delivery of tomorrow morning (totally stoked). @@HorsePowerObsessed Here's a link to our video . I show the internals at 4:10 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ooCVdGlvYs99rsk . You'll see the center tube where the coalescing of the vapor takes place. Inside this tube are 3 stages of separation taking place, then the bottom drip edge. The discs and media dampen the air coming out of the can to keep up to 95% of the impurities contained. UPR takes great pride in constantly working to make our kits the best available. The goal with this kit was to make it easy to install and remove or service, and make sure it is effective. This is a NO DRILL installation with great quality components. Are there some that are less expensive? Yes, but then you could have just gotten a less expensive Camaro right? lol. Walmart sells a special can of Seafoam just for this purpose, with a U type spray tube connector. I sprayed mine with 2 cans while revving the engine at 2K RPM of Seafoam at 30K miles, but im hearing we`re supposed to spray it at every 10K miles, and its best to do it in the Fall, or Winter season because those engine bays get SUPER HOT. You can check out Scotty Kilmers channel in KZbin,,,,,,a guy did his D.I. car, and he shows a before and after video of his valves after spraying with Seafoam. I really think the issues with putting these on as OEM is cost and the maintenance requirement. Telling owners they need to pay to empty and dispose of the contents every couple of thousand miles won't fly in an era of extended service intervals. And Mrs Wilbur next door is not going to empty the Catch can herself. If it cost GM just $10 ea. $10 is still a major expense when factored into 30,000 cars every year, with the cost not just of the $10 can but also the labor to install it. Manufacturers squeeze suppliers to get 10 cents out of the cost of a switch or electrical connector. $10 is a lot of money.

Yes they CAN do that but the problem is they have to PROVE that the catch can caused the issue and it's very unlikely that it did so they wouldn't be able to prevent warranty work from being done. Not just that, but that situation was a one off style where you'll never see that again most likely. Because of how easy this can be installed, uninstalling it for warranty work (engine related) would be recommended just to avoid issues.

You don't need one. Chevy has addressed this many times. Yes, catch cans catch some oil. So what? There isn't a single documented case of the LT2 motor having valve issues due to carbon building from PCV vapors. The fact that a catch can catches oil, doesn't prove anything. The catch can, due to how it works, INCREASES the amount of oil residue coming from the crank case vent. It allows the hot air to slow down, cool, and that causes some small amount of oil to condensate and settle out and collect over time in the can. Otherwise, the heat and velocity of the PCV air would just get sucked into the motor and burned, with no ill effects. This motor has been out 4 years now. Go and search and see if you can find any cases of valve damage from carbon build up. It doesn't exist. The only people claiming that it *could* cause damage, are the people trying to sell you catch cans. This is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

Show me an LT2 with over 100k miles on it that would have excess carbon build up. Yes, it will and can happen. For the price of a catch can, why risk it?

@@HorsePowerObsessed You say that, but the data says you are wrong. As do the engineers at Corvette. The LT2 is a 4 year old platform, no issues yet. Go to the prior gen that was out many years longer, still no credible reports of this issue. Consider that the Ron Fellows race school, doesn't run catch cans on their cars and I would argue that those are the hardest run Corvettes on the planet. Nothing but hard driving and high RPM, which is what folks claims exacerbates this "issue"... And yet, all these years, no valve problems from excessive carbon buildup related to the PCV system. This is one of those issues where the internet took something that might have happened on a 2011 Audi, and now its grown and taken on a mythical life of its own and "every GDI has to have this product or your motor will fail" and it's just not true. The people wanting to sell these things claim it(and those they sponsor), and the people who paid for them of course want to justify it... But it's not. GM has millions of GDI fleet miles out there with over 100k miles and if it was a widespread problem, we would know about it. Right now, all we have are some folks telling us it could or will happen... but in all these years? Nothing. The craziest part is that a small percentage of DCT's fail, but most people will tell you that it's not that common, that most owners are fine... But when it comes to catch cans and there are ZERO failures, that means you WILL have a problem if you don't buy and install this product that the people who made your car says it doesn't need. lol The Corvette engineers claim it's not a problem, that they designed the motor to accommodate this. If you think they are lying and you don't trust them, why would you buy a car from someone you don't trust?

I think the EPA has way too much to say about it for GM to be honest about it. Their hands are tied. Again, for the price of a catch can, why risk it? That's ultimately what it boils down to. Doesn't matter who is lying and who is telling the truth. I'll spend the 300 bucks and worst case it wasn't needed but with how much oil it catches, it tells me it is something most should consider. If you don't want to believe it or err on the side of caution then don't but I, and many others will continue to do so for the low cost and peace of mind.

@@HorsePowerObsessed Fair enough, but part of why it catches oil, is that the way it works, causes oil to condensate more than it otherwise would. I have just searched and searched and cannot find a single occurrence of it being a problem. And you know how the internet is, a couple dozen people have DCT failures, out of 30k cars, and suddenly "all the DCTs are failing, steer clear!"... The fact that we can't find ANY cases of verified problems... Tells me it's one of those things that the internet keeps repeating, even though its never really presented itself as a problem. I have a catch can sitting here, but after spending a good bit of time trying to find something, anything, concerning actual valve issues from oily air from the PCV, I came up with exactly nothing... The Corvette engineers did say that they built a catch can system into the motor. And they said that when you leave the system intact, the oil that is aerosolized in the hot crank case air, doesn't slow and cool enough to condensate and form oil droplets... When it goes into a catch can, it does... So it sounds like the catch can is what creates most of the "problem" that it then claims to solve... 🙂

@SquireSCA we can agree to disagree. All the evidence I’ve seen tells me this engine definitely needs a catch can but if you want to believe the people who have their hands tied by the EPA go right ahead. As I said above, even if it’s not needed, for $300 it’s worth it for peace of mind.

Be careful not to scratch the paint by putting items on the car. Yikes.

Sales of catch cans must have slowed down.
