Ok, here we go haha. No, the air compressor is not blowing out water however I am blowing water and mud off from the tank making it look like water out of the hose I guess.... and yes I spray it with fluid film AFTER I get the tank in place so I don't get it all over my hands putting the tank in. Trust me though, this truck will rot in half before it needs another unit 😉

These two videos brought back some raw memories. I took my wife's Honda to the dealership for the infamous fuel pump recall even though it had been running perfectly for four+ years. After a long delay for part, they changed the fuel pump. A week later, the dash showed "Tighten Fuel Cap". Inspected the cap and found everything perfect (11K miles on the car). I re-tightened the cap and the message persisted. Then, I remembered the fuel pump replacement. I took the car back to the dealer. After a week, they declared the message cleared and there was no longer a problem. Happily, the wife filled the tank. That night a strong gasoline odor filled the garage and the house. Investigation revealed a gasoline puddle on the garage floor directly under the fuel tank. I parked the car outside, and the next morning, I found another puddle on the driveway. Removed the rear seat and access panel to find the top of the fuel tank wet with gasoline. Inspection revealed only three of seven locking ring tabs engaged. Discussed with the service rep who wanted to send someone out to retrieve the car, but the car was unsafe to drive (ironic considering that the original repair was a "safety recall"). You had two opportunities to get this right, and you whiffed. I fixed it myself reusing the o-ring, fuel pump and lock ring. You think I'll bring this car back to a dealer for the next recall/problem?...Not bloody likely.

My new 08 odyssey after the second oil change I noticed oil on the garage floor because the dealership 65 miles away called and left a message that I needed a new front tire because they couldn't repair it. Being a mechanic I used my two floor Jack's to find which front tire had a problem. It happen to be the right front, a nail, repaired it with a plug but I noticed oil on the floor. Oil dripping off of frame below the oil filter and thought problems solved. I came home for lunch momma and van were at work but more oil on the floor. I jacked the van back up after work and I found oil seeping around drain plug. Got a wrench and gave it a 1/4 turn. It was only finger tight. That was the last time the dealership changed my oil. That's why I quit working for the General. Dealerships suck

It’s snowing here at 5am, cup of coffee and the sounds of compressor and air hammer coming from a SMA video…..Just what my wife wanted to hear. Tips and clues from another rust belt wrench. I have found applying some brake silicone grease to the bottom of the new retainer ring and top of sending unit makes the ring slide around like butter. No need for heavy impacts. Sometimes just using hand strength and brass drift. As always thank you for the Morning wake up call. And keep up the videos. Everyone down here at the fillin station says HAY!

Kudos to Eric and Josh. Their third fuel tank drop out of a Chevy in one week to fix pump issues. We all now know why the first 2 garages that looked at this EVAP leak said they could not find it (see Part 1 for ref). Those shops did not want to do the hard, dirty work needed to fix a customer’s problem. This is an example of what makes SMA the gold standard.

I did a sending unit replacement on an old 80's Dodge W250 not too long ago. I fully expected the lock ring to be rotten, but was pleasantly surprised that someone (or the factory) packed the whole top of the unit with grease! After I wiped off all the grease, everything underneath was pristine. Wish I would have gotten pictures and videos of it. Too bad the lock rings on these GM trucks aren't greased up like that, could save a lot of headaches.
@erik_dk842
@erik_dk842 2 жыл бұрын
Since they only change the basic design of these trucks once every three decades, you'd think that the people in the rust belt would smarten up and apply some Fluid Film to the known worst problem areas, BEFORE they rust out. But they seam to have a fatalistic mindset that rust is inevitable, so delaying the decay for five or ten years is not worth it.

In all the many years I've been repairing and replacing tank senders, it's still a mystery to me why almost every car, modern or classic, has the tank sender built into a depression in the tank instead of just being directly on top on a flat surface. In this case the flange ring would probably have deteriorated anyway in the PRNY environment but that degradation is exacerbated by it being inside that depression where water, salt and crap accumulates.
@ice44567
@ice44567 2 жыл бұрын
I believe it's just for packaging reasons. In order to have space for the lines coming out of the unit, you have to have it in a depression on the top or on the side, since it gets wedged as close as possible to existing sheet metal to take up as little space as possible. There's also consideration for making the fuel pump basket at the lowest point of the tank, and making room for driveline components or suspension components that need to travel in close proximity. I'm not saying it couldn't be done better, but that's what makes sense to me. It's a lot easier to design the tank around everything else than the inverse.

On my son-in-laws 2009 Ford Police Interceptor. The sending unit was on the front side of the tank. Was a 20 min job to remove. No tank removal necessary. Like this Idea. His 2006 Mercury Marques has the same setup. Some body was thinking.
@michaelblacktree
@michaelblacktree 2 жыл бұрын
I think the depression adds structural strength to the tank. But it would be just as easy to design it with the depression inverted. After all, this is a truck. There's plenty of room back there.

i've gotten a dead aftermarket pump once and a few that had incorrect/bad fuel tank pressure sensors and fuel gauge level readings. Also had a tab of one of the pumps nearly get cut in half just from putting fuel ring on. The plastic on some of those are so thin compared to the gm ones. Also worth noting, if you have a fuel capless gm truck 14-18 and you work in a dusty super dirty environment, look into getting a cap or use a bearing buddy that'll fit over it, dirt will eventually infiltrate and take out your fuel pump.

Suggestion for future content: I have been struggling to diagnose a keyless entry issue, unable to enter programming mode on a 2006 Highlander. I see this issue posted across brands without resolution, either by DIY or dealerships. This would be an interesting diagnosis. The most common suggestion is to take it to a dealer, which is a non-starter.

I replaced the sending unit on my first car, 1978 Ford LTD, because fuel gauge was constantly showing a full tank. Did not have to remove the tank on that one, thank God, but it was a good thing I was a scrawny and flexible teenager back then.

And it's all plastic and screwed down like the lid on a gas canister. No rust problems there.

Cool diagnosis and fix. I was waiting for you to hit the area with some Fluid Film, but not even sure that would make much of a difference. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

Of course it makes a great difference. Why the h*** do people in The Rust Belt don't put Fluid Film on their cars and trucks before they get this rusty?

I really appreciate SMA videos. I learn a lot, like what/where is Avoca. On another note, I suggest you ignore the "non believers" and negative comments. They don't deserve your time or attention.

Southern Ontario is a “ salt belt “ as well. For that matter , one of the biggest salt mines is near me in Goderich , Ontario ( just saying) . Anyway, I have never seen those fuel pumps crack like that and I’ve had my share of changing pumps. Lots of rusty lock rings. Even tho I’m retired now I still tinker some. This is a good one to keep in the attic under the snow, lol.

Looks like a good spot ( the locking ring ) to use some fluid film, or some such.

Just replaced my pump about 3 weeks ago ( 08 Express ), pump went out 2 days after I filled up so 25 gallons left. The retaining ring though was stainless...never seen that before...maybe the assembler at GM was in a good mood.
