One advantage of having an L2 charger at home is you can take in more power to your battery during off peak hours. Sure, if you travel less than 40 miles a day, 120v will do you just fine pretty much all the time (it does for me anyways). But, your paying more for that charge because your also taking on power during peak hours. Here in SD, off peak is 12am-6am, which would be 24 miles on L1 but 150 miles on L2. Now here's the catch, I haven't done the math but I bet the money you save on cheaper electricity in off peak hours isn't enough to offset the cost of installation for many years.

Nice review overall but I strongly disagree with your comments about charging. I've owned a pure EV for almost four years now. 97% of the time I charge it at home using Level 1 and it actually works just fine. The thing that people who haven't owned an EV have trouble wrapping their head around is that the "gas station" model is obsolete. Most days, I drive around 20-30 miles. Come home by 9pm, leave at 7am. So that means the car is sitting for ~10 hours and can be charged during that time. 10 x 4 miles of range per hour means by the time you're heading out, you've gained 40 miles of range. It's just so rare that you're refilling a completely depleted battery and must take it to 100%. I know there are a few of people out there that drive hundreds of miles per day, but the majority will find Level 1 works out surprisingly well.
@sonicbhoc4 жыл бұрын
I've experienced the same thing. Nobody really seems to get the idea that charge times and fast charging speeds pretty much only matter if you plan on driving more the entire range of the car's battery in one trip.

I've owned a used 2017 Bolt for over a year now. I use the dryer outlet in my garage as a L2 charger, but it's limited to 4kW. WIth EV Time-of-Use rates, I only charge between midnite and 6am, for 6 hours, and still only plugged in every 2-3 days.

Depending on where you park the EV and if you own your house, getting an L2 charger isn't super expensive. The actual equipment is less than $500. Installation of a dedicated 240V circuit could be another $500. I waited until having my garage remodeled to go from L1 to L2. I think it is just a convenience. 2017 Bolt owner. Some tips: * To find chargers and plan trips, check out Plugshare and A Better Route Planner. These are Must Have apps for EV owners. * If you're thinking of buying new, and you're a Costco member.. keep an eye out for their annual fall GM promotion, which typically includes some nice rebates for the Bolt. * DO NOT BUY A BOLT WITHOUT DC FAST CHARGING unless you NEVER plan to drive more than 75 miles from home and will ALWAYS be charging at home. GM thinks the DC Fast charging port is optional (it shouldn't be) and they do not offer it as a retrofit. If you buy a Bolt without DC Fast Charging, you are boned. * If you have a 240v appliance outlet in your garage for a dryer - that's a Level 2 charger. It will charge at up to 8kW, or 30+ miles/hour. More than sufficient for overnite charging. (Pre-covid I drove 50 miles daily and only plugged in every 2-3 days) * You can pick up an EVSA (glorified EV extension cord) on Amazon for around $250. The Bolt has onboard charge scheduling, so no need for a pricey Charger with scheduling features. Buy two - one for your home, and one to keep in the car so you can L2 charge from a dryer outlet when visiting relatives. * ABC - Always Be Charging. You'll always want to keep your EV between 25% and 75% state of charge (soc) for good battery management. Charging from 25-75% takes 4 hours on L2 or 1/2hr on a Fast Charger. Ideally, one should only charge to 100% when going on longer trips, and avoid going below 10% charge as much as possible. The OP quotes some first-blush math. The above is real-world experience. * 2017 Bolts are coming off lease: low mileage, good condition, for around $20. Check your favorite used car websites. I bought mine for $19k last year. Bolts have an expected lifetime of around 250k miles, and the powertrain is warranteed to 8 years, 100k miles. So 'midlife' for an EV is much higher mileage than for ICE vehicles. * Lastly, join one of the many Bolt/EV Facebook groups. You'll find lots of friendly owners who are happy to help get you up to speed on all the new wrinkles of EVs and the Bolt.

I just don't understand why some reviewers obsess about charging speeds on the basis of "charging from empty it will take N hours...". You will never empty the battery pack unless you are on a long trip -- and in that use case you will be using public DC fast charging sites (orders of magnitude faster than the 3 kW you get from domestic 110v; as he said: 160 mph). The only use case scenario I can think would require more than L2 charging at home is... wait, no, I can't think of one. The car will be sat in your garage charging from the time you get home (6 pm?) to the time you leave in the morning (7:30 am?) -- that 13.5 hours of charging. Even at 4 mph, that's 54 miles added. How many days do you drive more than 54 miles?
@xchopp3 жыл бұрын
p.s. If you have a 220v outlet anywhere (and it's not being used!) you can elevate the rate to 12 mph -- three times faster than 110v. We got a portable EVSE that can use 110v - 240v and we plug it into the socket that our ancient (1978) thru-the-wall AC uses -- BUT we do this maybe twice a year. Most of the time we just use the 110v outlet in the garage. I thought you ought to know that if you can use 220/240v, you would be able to add over 160 miles of range every single night in the scenario above. Is that enough? Plus, you never have to line up at the stinky gas station -- bonus!

And you should have seen the "space saver" spare on that thing. It would have been at home on a Vespa! I'm loving my '20 Bolt Premier. Edit: Okay, let's talk about that 65-hour 120v charging time. Well yeah, if you're going to start at zero and go to 100% it going to take a while, but if you're home charging 15 hours a day, that's 60 miles. That works out to almost 22,000 miles a year. I can rig my charger to my dryer's outlet if I need to do level 2 charging, but I've only done that once. The rest of the time I plug in to the lowly 120v charger in my garage and that's been enough to commute to work twice a day (school bus driver), run all the errands I need, and take a nice drive through the Rockies on the weekend. When I do longer trips, there's always ChargePoint, EA, or even Tesla Superchargers now. (Thanks Elon!) I have driven Teslas (3 and X) and like the way the Bolt drives much better. ( I haven't driven the model Y yet. My neighbor offered his for a test drive but haven't done it yet due to COVID19 concerns.) The regen is much more aggressive in the Bolt. You can't really come to a complete stop in the Model 3 using the regen alone. All the Teslas that you can actually buy do have better range, much faster charging and a far better DC fast charging network. So if you have to take a lot of long trips and are in hurry on those trips, spending the extra money on a Tesla makes sense. I've gone on trips over 2000 miles in the Bolt in CO, UT, ID, MT, WY and SD where the DC fast charging network is very sparse. It takes a lot of planning to do, but if you aren't in a big hurry and plan meals and/or touristing during your charging stops, you can still do the long distance trips.

The part where dude is rambling about charging is a cringefest of cluelessness. Let's clear that up. An electric car isn't like a gas car, where you drive until the tank is almost empty and then refill. An electric car is like a cell phone, where you come home and plug it in every night, and unplug it again when you leave every morning. That means you only need to recoup as many miles overnight as you drive in a typical day. The average American drives less than 40 miles a day -- which means they could recoup those miles even out of a standard 120 volt wall outlet! Those who drive more should get a Level 2 home charging station --- this connects to a dryer plug or similar 240 volt circuit, and it will enable you to fully charge up overnight even if you pull in with 0 miles remaining. As for what dude calls a level 3 charger -- properly called a DC fast charging station -- nobody has one at their house; instead, they're mostly installed along highways, and mostly used to recoup range much faster than that during a road trip: e.g. add 150 miles of range while you eat lunch.

does regenerative braking actually use the brakes? so if you were careful would you be able to have great breaks for a very long time

@movax20h4 жыл бұрын
There are people using EVs for 3-4 years with a lot of regenerative breaking and mechanical breaks disks looks like brand new. :) You should clean and use them sometime , and inspect according to manual of course.
@stansunderwirth414 жыл бұрын
No. The regenerative braking uses the motor as a generator to brake and put that kinetic energy back into the battery. The friction brakes will last a VERY long time, being rarely used.
@xchopp3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. There's very little mechanical wear. This also means: far, far fewer particulates from braking (this was ignored in some dumb report some ICE boosters put together a few years ago). There's still particulates from tire wear but that's hard to avoid.

EddieX There aren’t really any options you can get for the Model 3. Autopilot is included, FSD is an $8k option which most people do not need.
@pioneer77777774 жыл бұрын
Model 3 is $38k, more if you want different colors or wheels. If you want a Bolt, top trim, $31k right now for Premiers new. Considering that's $7k less you have to pay sales tax on and finance costs on, add another 10% or so to that difference. Plus Bolt has a hatchback for better cargo capabilities, higher riding position which is a common complaint about the 3. And a nice $7k+ in your bank account, which for some people is a big deal. The Bolt has its place in the market in my opinion. Glad it's there as an option for those that like hatchbacks.

After having been stung by the GOD AWFUL quality I've experienced with a new Model S, and wife's Model 3- people making comments about the uneven panel gaps, the inability to get the doors lined up after numerous service attempts, and yes the ever-persistent leaks-- I don't get all bent out of shape... These things are all true; Tesla's are from a quality-control standpoint- junk. But I still own two, and love them for their envelope-pushing. Yep, the Model 3/Y have the single cheapest, bland interior ever made- yet most people look past that and somehow it's a good thing on a Tesla... For as much as I love my Tesla's- I have a suspicion that even this lowly Chevy Bolt has doors that close without dragging in their frames, straight body panels, and likely doesn't leak like a polish submarine.

I just turned in my 18 Bolt lease on a 20 Bolt Premier. Since I have a GM card..no monthly fees...I had an extra $3k bonus earnings added on to my $1600 earnings, along with a lot of dealer incentives. So it took a $44,560 car down to $23, 825!!! It was cheaper for me to buy this car then to by out my fleece...I mean lease;) You can still get some bargain prices with a little shopping around.
