Red Man is kind of a tradition in my family. My grandmother used to mail it to my Grandpa in 1950 when he couldn't get it in Alaska. He took as much as he could carry when he went to Korea in 1951. My Uncle got it as often as he could in the Marine Corp in Vietnam in 1967. My dad always had some when we would go hunting..I got started on it early when I would secretly sample my uncle's and dad's. I chewed Red Man alot during my time in the Army, and in Iraq and Afghanistan. It just tasted like home. I mainly still chew Red Man, Stokers Tennessee Chew, and Stokers Apple.

Nice review. My favorite chew. Redman Original is the King. The best flavor and mouthfeel. Not overly sweet. Quality stuff. It's a shame about the name change but regardless of what it's called it doesn't get any better than this.

The funny thing is I think a lot of younger folks apparently have never had molasses. So they say it's raisiny, and the Germans with the Stokers chew available online for sale there say plums and dried fruit :D Haha. Anyone who has had it or black licorice would recognize those two things immediately. Some plugs are EXACTLY like Australian soft licorice. Was reaching this because I picked up a bag on a BOGO coupon I had. I would venture to think the recipes for chew and plugs was directly taken from licorice products. It's a classic, the leaf quality is some of the best even tho it's not in my top 3 lol, I rarely get it unless I have a BOGO coupon with other options available. Still gotta find Select sometime!

Redman is the OG. When I was 6 my older brother asked me if I wanted some "chocolate flavored big league chew" and let me take a big ol chaw of tobacco. He said he never saw someone turn so many different colors! I didn't really start chewing until I was in the Army because we couldn't smoke in the field. The enemy can see a cigarette ember from a very far way away and the smoke carries on the wind and is distinct in it's smell. Our company commander would buy us a pallet of redman or levi garrett. I recently started chewing again but I couldn't bring myself to spend so much for redman! I get a bag every now and then, but I buy bowie mostly. I find it rides the line between a sweet and a "full flavor" chew like redman. I can't stand big duke or starr

My dad LOVED his RedMan tobacco. He go my grandma moved off dipping snuff Nd moved her over the redman. He would buy a sleeve, think hd at least 10 pouches, and split them with her. They were always getting spitoons or neat old cans to have for spit can. She was wonderful!!!

Thanks for the review. Just bought my first pouch of Red Man Original. RMO was the only loose leaf product at my local tobacco store @ $12.50/3 oz. I didn't know loose leaf was hard to find. Never chewed before (no dip or snus, either). I like getting a cheek in when I'm down by the river bottoms, watching my dog hunt for mice.

It all comes from Cigars. With plug they got tired of throwing away the scraps from making cigars so they added molasses to the scraps and pressed it into a large rectangular block and then your local store would cut a portion for you.

So ive smoked cigars and pipes since i turned 18 (32 now).Never got addicted to them. I'd smoke a lot for a few weeks, get bored, and go a few months without smoking. Started working at a gas station and was looking at some of the long cut dips. Figured hey, might try something new because like smoking (and alcohol) i get bored quick and put it down. If it isn't spicy chicken tacos or sushi i generally lost interest quick. Anyway, I remembered my great uncle used to chew redman all the time when i was growing up. The only tobacco I had tried chewing was some petersons irish flake (bad idea). Anyway, tried my first go of it while watching this video. Yep. Im an amateur. Spitting like crazy. Is it normal to sort of make deep in your throat kinda tighten up for a bit? Im about 10-15 minutes into my first try of it at this point and it has mellowed out a lot. Its just a nice subtle flavor of molasses and sort of a nutty flavor. Not sure if im doing it right, but overall a bit more user friendly than a cigar, and definitely more so than packing a pipe 😅

I know every blend and company will have their own special recipes for flavoring, but what is the basic casing? I know for Burley leaf is usually an invert sugar made from licorice. I keep hearing molasses and honey too. It's interesting that in Burley pipe tobaccos everyone swears they taste molasses in classic blends like Edgeworth and Sir Walter Raleigh but what they are probably tasting is licorice intermingling with the natural chocolate/coffee flavor of Burley itself. This stuff is just interesting to me. Also interesting is how just a few internet forums can spread myths so far and fast.
