Wonderful video Jim . Happy Labor Day . I have some Coleus I have grown from seed , they are about three weeks old . I cannot grow coleus outside as it is too hot as I am in Phoenix AZ . So I have set up a table in my kitchen with grow lights and am trying that . See how it goes . Love your videos . 💖🌺🌻

@susanchrist6511 Hi Susan!!! Thank you so much. My friend Lou lives in Buckeye AZ... Tough to keep plants going in that heat!!! Good luck on the indoor route. A good LED supplement grow light may help...they need alot of bright light !!

So glad you took some Mariposa cuttings Jim. What a stunner that cutting I sent you, grew into. Nice job. It’s so unique. Long or short, coleus cuttings will thrive if they get enough light. Kingswood Torch cuttings will do just fine….I have tons that have lived for multiple months. Mariposa is very slow to flower but mine is actually flowering now indoors, with the days getting shorter. How is your Spitfire doing?

@Holy.Moly.Coley. Hi Sherry... I took several Mariposa cuttings ....just don't have the space to bring the whole pot indoors. But like my Lord Voldemort Coleus I will transplant them next May in the same pot....so no loss. YES SPITFIRE.... I almost lost it bc of a heavy t storm...but I dried it a bit inside the Greenhouse....now it's inside as the night temps are hitting the 50/60° F Marks... It is a short stemmed very feathery type of Coleus....so I will see if I can get a good cutting for shipping. I was looking back at some pictures of the Piñata sort of wish I took a few cuttings but as you know I loaded up all my plants not thinking and a customer wanted both as matching plants....but Rosy Dawn still sells them as well as Spitfires so no worries. Getting ready to start my Ebay seeds next few days

Happy Labor Day to you. Man it seems we were just planting our seeds. And already we are collecting seeds for next spring. My plants are doing well. They do have seeds but not yet ready to harvest. I haven't yet taken any cuttings yet. Probably wait until the end of this month. I used to bring plants in too because I didn't have the heart to watch them die out, but bringing in plants meant bringing in bugs too.

Hi Evelyn...just let me say that I appreciate your watching all these years and your kindness which is so evident in your comments. Overall this year was a good one.... life as I'm sure you well know has a way of throwing curveball after curveball making it difficult to maintain a routine which I'm my case is necessary as I try to organize from Seed sowing to Seed Harvesting. But people like yourself help keep me motivated and I appreciate it. So Enjoy your Coleus as I continue to do....Im like Walgreens & Walmart with my video on Seed harvesting and Cuttings ....Im setting up my Halloween & Thanksgiving stuff 😆 🤣 . Thanks again & God Bless Evelyn. If you would like seeds let me know...I'll take good care of you.

I thought the darker stems wouldn't root as well, and I thought the cuttings had to be little/short. I can't remember where I got that from. Thanks for making this video, Jim! The master!

@Catzbe True the darker stems have a tougher membrane as opposed to the soft green which root much quicker....but I have had tremendous success with the darker stems. As for the length ....I have done both....perhaps I tend to cut mine longer because of the taller bud vases. You know you can even Root a leaf node in water!? ...the roots will emerge from where the stem attaches!!

@@Jimswholiestofcoleus it's got me curious. I wanna try one with a dark stem. Lord knows I got plenty of them!

Hi. I had not grown coleus in probably 40 years, but I moved in 2023 to Richmond, VA and decided to try them this year in 11 huge planters in which I planted caladiums last year (they were showstoppers). I did a variety of Kong (Mosaic, Rose), Main Street (cannot recall names off top of my head), and Colorblaze (Watermelon and others). [I kept all the plant tags from the nursery so can dig up all the exact names if I need to.] These coleus way exceeded my expectations, with most growing to 4' - 5' tall. I had neighbors come by just to marvel at them. The Colorblaze generated few seed spikes (the Kong varieties went crazy with seeds but I continually pinched them off until early August). I'm not sure if I will try to harvest seeds (from any) nor am I sure the Colorblaze would have time to produce viable seeds this late. Do you have an opinion about that? We had a huge storm recently which broke large sections of the coleus. I composted a bunch and also put several stems in vases in the house, which are already rooting.

@user-wi3yr2sg3t Sounds like you have a coleus green thumb!! And Those varieties do well in containers especially mixed with other plants . There are so many varieties...not all will be available yearly...but Mosaics, Kongs are a mainstay. As for Stalk development...Mosaics and Kongs are pretty aggressive seeders....I usually get plenty and they develop early so harvesting mature seeds isn't a problem... unlike my Lord Voldemort & Fishnet which rarely seed or seed so late I do not get viable seeds....so I take plenty of cuttings for next season. Thanks for watching....and for taking the time to share your comment

Hi there. Have you had any problems with tap water. Many tropical plants dont like it. Rain water or distilled water works, or their leaf tips go brown. Any problems with that?

@MrWolfheart111 I personally haven't but I wouldn't discount the possibility.... I simply check my soil and it's ph balanced well. You are absolutely correct about Rain water though... I believe All plants thrive on Rain 🌧 water . Good question and Thanks for watching.
