If i could give you some advice. It would be to not show up to the tournament to early. I did a bunch of tournaments. My first ones i would show up to early. I would look at all the competitors wondering if i was going to be going against that particular person, all day long. My adrenaline would rise and fall. It totally messed me up and i got smashed. I stopped showing up super early. Maybe 2 hours or less before my age group matches. The results were much better. Peace and good luck.

I’m 50 and it took me six years to get my blue belt (life, family illness & moved). I would go into rolling with a tremendous amount of negativity to the effect of “your too old,” “you should have started when you were younger,” or “this person is much better than you.” Those were and at times still are the voices I have to contend with between my ears when on the mat. Thank you for the helpful advice and to the person who wrote the question. It is getting better for myself thankfully. Please keep up the good work!

Love your videos mate. This subject rings true for myself, and also the guys I teach. I’m a Small town purple belt teaching Whitebelts who have decided to come train with me. Something I always remind myself and tell my guys, don’t worry about others and how many resources they have, where they train, who they train with etc. just focus on what you can control, and fix problems by putting yourself in positions that you are having trouble with. 3 of my guys competed at the weekend at a tournament in Melbourne against experienced whitebelts (4th stripe) and did really well - 1st stripe male got gold, 2nd stripe female got gold, and 2nd stripe male got bronze. My coach (from the city) says that Sometimes the benefit of living remotely is you’re forced to problem solve on your own, which makes you better at solving said problems without relying on higher ranks to do it for you - therefore treating your training as an intellectual exercise, not just physical (exercise). 😁

Love the Videos chewie. Got a slight situation my self. Iv been training at a JKD/Kickboxing/BJJ school for several years now. Its a great little school. Decent grappling. Very High level striking. Friendly welcoming enviorment. But its about an hour drive and their a little on the pricier side. A little over a year ago I found a much more local TKD school that was about 10 minuites from my house. I schedualed a private lesson with the instructor one day to get some tips on the turning side kick. I was suprised to find that they Not only had a Japanese Jiu Jitsu program, but a highly effective one at that. Trained wrestling. Judo. Alot of newaza. Mma. Rolling every class much like the BJJ classes i had been use to. So i checked out their classes and after getting smashed by some teenager white belts i started taking a class there once a week to suppliment my JKD/BJJ. Heres my dilema. My finical situation has changed recently and i can no longer afford continue training at both schools. So do I stay loyal to the more expensive BJJ and JKD an hour away that iv been an a couple years longer? Or do I start training at the more Local (and cheaper) JJJ school full time?
@ryansears66035 жыл бұрын
Chewy, this makes me think of the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. It’s big on how thoughts have the tendency to manifest into their physical equivalence. I saw you had a post earlier about good books for BJJ and if you haven’t read this one you should seriously check it out!

I having a problem now I used to train in a big school away from my house because it was much better ( and it really is) and then I had a injury in my knee so I was away from training for at least one year. Then when I got better I found a school near my house but much smaller and I decided to start training there and I liked. The problem is that my friends from my first school discovered that I am training in another place and they are asking me to return, but I can't decide because I like both places so is impossible for me to choose in which one I should stay.

I just started bjj 3 weeks ago, coming from a collegiate level of wrestling. I focus mainly on passing guard but I don't go for many submissions. Does anyone else have this problem of not going for submissions and focusing mainly on changing position(guard to side control, side control to mount etc).
@amymitchhaubert51715 жыл бұрын
I did brother. Wrestling background. My coach has me working on the guard for the next year. When I take side-control, back, mount, no one escapes. My guard...well, when I get on my back I spaz out and need to learn guard retention and sweeps. Wrestling is a great help to Jiu-Jitsu and a great harm if we don't move past it. It's a tool, but not the only tool. Blessings, Oss!

Any tips for how to call out a student on his insecurity without offending or pissing him off and driving him to quit? I've noticed that a lot of the problematic ego issue people tend to all be dealing with some kind of insecurity baggage. I mean they can leave but I'd rather somehow help these kinds of customers learn to just go with training and find real self confidence that way.
@kaiceecrane38845 жыл бұрын
If it is a serious issue then that is for mental health professionals to help them deal with, if it isn't serious building trust with, helping them identify their insecurities, and for them to be honest about it, then give them the tools to over come their insecurities and build confidence. Solutions to a specific insecurity isn't always a one fix to one problem kind of issue, different people have different needs, even though their insecurity may be the same as one person where it stems from and its root cause can yeild different manners of going about dealing with that issue. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. You can't actually force someone to do anything, you can offer incentives to perform an action (depent on context can be abuse or even torture, and even with good intentions often the insensitives for behavior cause insecurities in of themselves and lead to worsening mental health), but everything anyone does is a decision made by the brain based on what information it has gather over experiences; experience of reality is your perception of it, your perception of reality is your experience, they are the same thing. An insecurity is formed based on their experience which turns into a negative perception of themself. The goal is to identify what their perception is and why, what experience led to that conclusion. With that information you can shape experiences that give them a counter to their current perception of self, say teaching a person who feels incapable of doing a push up and helping them do 1 or even 10 to something far more emotionally complex. That experience creates a new perception of self, but their insecurity has likely has been with them shaping many upon many experiences that has only set in an increasing expectation of negative self perception that will take many more positive experiences to counter their many negative ones. Like I said before, dependent on how serious the issue is let a trained professional deal with the issue, otherwise you can cause more damage than you are helping to fix

Hey, Chewy I started BJJ at a local gym recently. I work overseas for about 2/3 of the year. So, the time that I'm home, I spend 4-5 days a week training at the gym. This rotation back at work, I started training/rolling with a couple of my teammates that were also interested in learning. We use a lot training videos from you and Tom at the grappling academy. I've heard and seen all the comments directed at white belts for "training people" and I'm not trying to be that guy. But I really want to roll and learn as much as possible. What do you think? -Ross

i have a question: i am the highest level white belt in my class, and looking towards my blue belt soon. the only thing that is stopping me is i’m not submitting people. the lower white belts in my class are generally the same weight, and i just can’t seem to submit/sweep them, but they’re doing that to me. i can generally last with them and the higher blue and purple belts. i have great defense, but i just can’t submit anyone. (p.s. i don’t know if this is the right place to submit a question but here it is. also you can use my real first name.)

I got a question for you. How do you deal with a guy that your game don't match? He is a world class black belt and even though I'm just a brown belt i can hang with most of them and even get the best from people who can best him from time to time. It' like his A game is the perfect counter for my A game and my B game is not good enough to get me anywhere. It might sound an ego question because I'm using a specific example, but its a doubt aim for this general situation when you find someone who's an "anti-you".

And i was woundring if i should talk to the coches becuase there are a few purple belts and even some brown belts and its and its supposed to be a beginners class. When we do spar we have to line up and wait untill someone loses and goes back in line becuase of the limited space becuase of that many times i will be matched up with purple belts and even brown belts and i feel like i dont even have a change to practice my techniques becuase i get submmeted after 20sec and have to wait in line for another 2min to spar. Whats are your thoughts on this?

@kaiceecrane38845 жыл бұрын
In my experience it two things: 1. Culture of getting rid of weight to such an extreme that you do anything. I wrestled with a guy that would regularly every season cut 50-60 over the course of every season and gain the weight back in the off season. 2. Getting rid of "excess" water in attempt to cut water weight
