Congratulations! I will be 60 in a few days, started about 8 years ago and became a brown belt 5 months ago. Last week I decided I was going to quit. I felt like I couldn't keep up with the 20 -30 year olds and if I did well it wasn't from years of rolling it was because they were going easy on me - a 'pity party', which I don't want. I could not accept my limitations. However, I do love Jiu Jitsu. I told my Coach about quitting. He definitely was not pleased. He has encouraged me for many years- (whenever I have doubts like now). He once again convinced me not to quit. BUT - I still am very sad about my age etc and it's always in my mind that if I just quit I would not have to think about it.

Just think, Cynthia, how much worse you'd have it if you wering training. Maybe allow yourself to take a vacation, relax and do nothing, and then come back with renewed energy. osss
@cynthiageskes14572 жыл бұрын
@@deifor Hi, good, sensible advice- I have thought about taking a break, but I kind of work like that saying 'an object in motion will stay I motion..etc'. I have taken a break 2× - once for rotator cuff surgery- about 4.5 months- the other, Covid shutdown. Aside from those pretty much train 4-6×/week. I get paranoid that others will get 'ahead' of me. So either I'm in or I'm out (yes, not necessarily sensible)
@juandenz20082 жыл бұрын
An aging body can definitely make things more challenging. On the other hand you have to ask yourself what made you want to take the BJJ journey in the first place ? If it is no longer rewarding then there is no harm in devoting your resources to another activity. On the other hand if you still feel like you can get a lot from BJJ, maybe you just need to reduce your training frequency a bit to prevent burnout. 4-6x / week is quite a lot. It's probably a mistake to try and compare yourself to others too much. Sometimes I feel like there is too much focus on the competitive nature of BJJ as opposed to each person focusing on their own personal growth.

I have enough time to be at the academy as much as 8 times per week. My goal is to make it to Black Belt in 8 years. I’m not gonna beat myself up if I don’t get there in that time frame, this is just a goal I have set for myself. I’ll grow as fast as my Professors see fit. But I’m in shape, I’m athletic, I eat right and take care of my body and learn really fast. So I think it’s attainable.

I think the reason a lot of people are starting BJJ so late in life is because when they were younger, most of them didn't know much about it. I think the awareness of BJJ came in 4 distinct waves: 1. Televised UFC/MMA matches 2. The rise in violent crime prompting you to learn self defense 3. Tired of the same old fitness routines and wanting something different 4. The enormous amount of KZbin videos that espouse the benefits of the sport If it weren't for YT videos, I think many still wouldn't try bjj. The videos are very helpful in filling in the gaps of information on why people should try it.
