In my gym, a moderate amount of chatter is pretty standard. Only once did a newer student announce to our instructor she "tapped everyone in class." They were politely told such talk is taboo and they apologized. Sometimes it's a lack of self awareness. Most of the time the chat is after a roll, a brief "that was a nice sweep/ you really caught me w/ that sub." Respectful, no ego. Other times it's more like, "can you show me how you did that/ what can I do from that position?" Genuine, trying to learn from the roll. Personally, I talk. And this video won't change that. When I roll with lower belts, I let them know at the start they can work what they like, I'm not here to smash them. I let them advance according to their skill level. I will help them through positions and submissions, likewise. With anyone "on my level" I'm generally silent during the roll and will complement/thank them afterward. I legit have to focus and this is time for me to improve on myself. Also, I'm 36 and usually need to conserve my energy for these rolls. When I roll with brown and black belts, again, I'm focusing and trying to conserve energy. Occasionally, if anything, a light hearted, self depricating, "oh no!" or "this isn't good." will slip out. Sometimes when I'm really getting smashed I'll ask coach why he's doing this to me, I thought we were friends.. Of course, I know why he does it. Hell, I'm paying good money for it. 😂🤣😂

If I get caught in a sub by a lower belt, the only time I start to coach is if I feel like they are starting to give up on the submission. I'll usually say something like "Dont give up!" and "Keep working it!". I do this for 2 reasons, 1: if I'm defending it, I dont want them to stop believing in the sub. 2: I like to work my escapes and see if during live rolling if I can get out of a almost or sunk in sub. Love the content bro! Keep it up!

I used to train with a brown belt that was maybe a blue belt at best. He talked me through every submission I ever put him through. Finally I got to the point where I would crank the submission in the middle of him talking. People pulled me aside and told me that he was doing it to everyone including the higher belts. The professor had to tell him to quit teaching everyone mid roll. One time he freaked out during a sweep I hit him with, screamed it was illegal, went to the workout section of the school and started throwing the dumbbell weights around... Not kidding. Also, I'm not bragging... I'm nothing special. I get smoked all the time. He just wasn't a real brown belt and was insecure about it.

Great video. Actually very refreshing to hear. At my gym we tend to talk, and I have always preferred some sort of talking during a roll. Usually if somebody submits me kind of saying that was awesome. That’s about the extent of it though. And yeah, never talk Someone threw moves when they’re beating you. It’s an obvious face saving thing. For my part, whenever I am rolling with somebody it is out of fellowship so a secret part of me is rooting for them, and the other part of me that has that fellowship with them also knows that they deserve nothing less than my best. So if they got a submission on me then not only did they earn it but it was awesome and I am proud of them for it. But I’m gonna try my best too

In my gym the teachers always encourage us to talk while we're rolling, they say that if you can not hold a conversation comfortably then we are rolling too hard to learn the techniques well and we should calm down a bit.They gave us the advice that if your opponent is going too hard on you (not just submitting you, but rather being a bit reckless) you could just throw a question at him , to force him to slow down a and answer it.
@sillyfarmerbilly88725 жыл бұрын
My instructor makes small talk with us while we're rolling with each other. During my third class ever I was getting smashed and the instructor asked me from across the room, "hey Billy, do you know the name of that meteor shower tonight?"... I thought he was testing me to see if I could be distracted, so I ignored him. He kept asking me, "hey Billy... You ignoring me?" "I'm fighting for my life here!" ... Other times help put us in a mock match with real stakes, and then he cracks jokes the whole time and we're trying to fight each other laughing.

Maybe you haven't experienced this before, but I've had a different kind of talking issue when visiting some other gym. I knew a teenager that would try to start such deep conversations it took you away from rolling. Wether he was winning or losing he was constantly saying stuff to try to get you sucked into a conversation. A lot of white belts that rolled with him would get so distracted they were barely even rolling. I just wouldn't say anything when I rolled with him. He was also a white belt, he wasnt even bad he put up a pretty good fight most of the time for how new he was but idk man.

I had this exact situation where I as a whitebelt rolled with a senior TKD practicioner who shared mats with us and wanted to try BJJ. He put up real resistance up until the point where it was obvious he would not be able to defend my submission, and just as you said in the video he went limp and started talking to me as if he was my coach and graciously "let" me put him in a rear naked to "practice my technique".

I was rolling with a pretty new guy at my gym, and I could feel him panicking when I passed his guard into Mount, and he did not try to advance his position, instead he would try to squeeze the life out of me... and then I chose to talk him through how to reverse it and submit me. Would you say I talked myself out of a loss?
@jameshawkins1781 Жыл бұрын
I will only talk someone through a position when someone has me dead to rights positionally, and I feel the “I don’t know what to do with my hands” pause in their offense. That said, if I feel someone hit me with the same submission and it’s only slightly off each time, I’ll escape, and then I will feed it to them once more and help them correct on the fly. Although, “We’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty” is my usual imminent death phrase just before I sink in some form of choke.

I don't do bjj but from wrestling if it's competitive there's no talking, if it's friendly there's shit talking, and if it's a novice against someone good you give them encouragement for what they did right. The only time you give them advice is when they're obviously stuck and don't have an answer to something. I think conducting yourself in that way is good for everyone. No distractions when you're pushing yourself, learning to relax and joke around, and helping a novice who is stuck... Also for me, I think I became a better wrestler when I started teaching technique to the younger guys, and we were all the unskilled once. It's good hearing feedback. Obviously using it as a copout is bullshit Edit: just subscribed to you, came across this channel a few times and love your input on things

My second roll ever was with this one blue belt guy in the gym. he kept saying mad weird shit in my ear and he got to my back but I was defending the choke so he gave me a nuggy. We talk more after the fact. Like if I slipped a triangle or armbar, we'll wait for the round to finish and then critique each other positively. Never has it been a negative experience for me. But it's worth noting too, I'm a lower belt and upper belts will help me finish all the time. "Hey adjust this" or "dont forget your hook" or whatever. It never comes across to me as them talking themselves out of a loss, more that they're helping me get better at my game. There's hardly a better learning opportunity than live rolling and finding yourself in an organic position to say "hey, this is where you need to get that hook in". Maybe it's just a rapport thing? But I'd have never thought I was doing someone a disservice helping them finish a choke so thank you for sharing that. I'll be mindful in the future if I find myself doing that and someone is getting upset.

I am one of the biggest guys in my school and I'm a blue belt, so I normally go a little lighter on the white belts. I have a decent amount of knowledge to know when I'm in trouble or something like that so I defend well. There will be times where I will kind of give them a favorable position to see what they will do and many times they don't take it and usually end up with a bunch of nothing on their end. Now I know how to escape or sweep, but I normally coach them through an option they didn't realize was there. It won't be some amazing rarely seen before technique. It's just that them being inexperienced didn't realize the capabilities from that position. So after I show them I say "Ok, lets go back to that position, but do it for real this time." At that point I'm in a bit more trouble now, but I am decent at defending. I see the smile on their face and that makes me happy because they walked away with something. A few times I got to see the fruits of their labor when they tried the same thing on someone else and I'm in the corner with the Pai Mei beard stroke. Should I stop? Or should I go through the roll and maybe take the time after to show them something?

I came from a wrestling background and I preface with that bc most guys at my gym give me credit for the strength that I have in between positions and my positional defense. However even though I can pretty much control position and scramble out of many weak positions I do struggle with finding submissions. one day I was rolling with one of the vets (purple belt) and essentially he put himself in a dominant position I successfully scrambled and found myself on top mount. In the exchange my strength was just too much for his defense but after about 30 seconds of no progress and me just grabbing his wrists and trying to find something he taught me an arm bar which is now one of my fav submissions and one of my most successful. different circumstances but very similar situations
