WTF is an Adult Green Belt in BJJ ?

In today's video I answer a question from Josh who is an adult Green Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Now some of you may be a little confused since Green Belts in Jiu-jitsu are usually saved for teenagers and kids (which I'll explain).
But with that, he's getting ready for a BJJ competition, and he wants to know what to compete since there are no adult Green Belt divisions.
So in this video I share some ideas from my own experience as a former adult Green Belt back in 2004 when I was a newer student in BJJ.
I also tell a story about a stinky white belt. Not a person white belt. . . my actual belt.
Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

An adult green is a tradition used by BJJ coaches that also have a background in Judo. These academies tend to emphasize takedowns more and usually do not give out stripes.

I will be competing in a Newbreed BJJ tournament/fight this December 3rd. Apparently, their rules go like this: an adult green belt(like myself) will have to compete in the same division as blue belts. This actually caused me to be bumped up a level in no-gi too(beginner-intermediate). This will be my first competition. I always train hard in my gym(American Top Team: Team Lima). I am looking forward to this.

I see a few green belts at competitions. My understanding it was for kids and not adults. I know at Carlson-Gracie you cannot get a blue belt till your 16 that’s why they have multiple color belts for kids. I think it’s for motivation our Sensei tells the kids every 28 classes they get a stripe but belt promotions are at his discretion. I just got my blue belt at 2 1/2 years and another adult student who has three years and shows up consistently and is still a white belt so Sensei watches carefully to see if students are ready to be promoted. I feel good that I picked the right school because he’s not just handing out belts.

Butt my one major issue with belts is that it almost implies that once you receive the belt ,that part of your training is over or something and alot of people rarely ever go back and do any of the training they did to get the belt, and training never ends. You are never done, so no real need for the belts lol

😄🤣Funny story!! It actually reminded me of incident that happen in our unit back when I was in service..so I know what you mean about the funk🤢😄.We went on a field training exercise which was like camping 🏕 without the luxuries. Guys in my unit spend a solid week in field doing activities like diving in rivers, crawling on dirt, running ,sweating ect. Well by the end of the week our uniforms which we barley change smelled awful but since we were around each other I guess we got accustomed to each other stinky smell. When we went back to our Units Barracks that Sunday (End of Ex) night a few guys were too tired and exhausted to change bath. So they went straight to bed😷..next morning when we formed up to go to breakfast their were a few guy who hadn't even bath nor change their uniform. So our supervisors/Sgt passed our group and was shocked and disgusted 🤢by our smell.Some of these guys tried to cover the smell by spraying AXE and Cologne which obviously didn't work..The Sgt basically said that we smell like we all just had a passionate night with a Bigfoot..and gave us a spew about how Suga & Onions don't mix 😄 nor matter how sweet sugar is it will never mask the taste and smell of onions when sprinkled on. The Sgt.basically made everyone(even those that were cleaned up) go back to bathe and change..we wasn't going anywhere near the dining facility with our smell as one if them said..So I get where you coming from with your story chewy😁 it was😄 👍...love the videos.

The different color stripes and colored tape approach is pretty effective for that purpose (helping the instructor etc keep up with who should be where and what they need to be working on etc) and although I do have from white to black belt in tkd and karate, I am no longer much of a fan of the whole belt system thing and have now been practicing Chinese arts the last 10 years. (There are no belts or levels in Chinese martial arts) although it is often more direct and hands on or personal than large classes , where the belts would come in handy atleast for the instructor.

In my experience in no gi I look for under hooks or sometimes wizards. Bigger guys do pretty well grabbing my wrists but that shit doesn't work for me. Straight body locking is usually a pretty good option, and who doesn't like a hug. It will all be positionally dependent. I wouldn't try grabbing too much besides arm drags, ankles and the back of the neck. Those will all be quick movements though. Not holds.

2 on 1 grips are king for me in no gi. I have flimsy injured wrists so I can't just keep a hold of someone else's wrist 1 on 1. But Kimura style grips if you can get them are super effective at being able to control your opponents arms so you can set up sweeps or submissions. Hope it helps

Greetings, my name is Aldiyar and I'm a heavy (130kg) 22 year old white belt in jiu-jitsu. I am writing to you to thank you for your content (it really helps), and also use this chance to ask a question that's bothering me atm. Question : how to overcome fear of injuring our being injured by my opponents on my first bjj tournament? It's coming in 13 days and that's the only thought I have coming to the event... (Side note- I am very careful with my rolling partners in the gym, I've hurt no one this far, but fear is that when I don't hold back I might snap someone's or my own bone to pieces due to adrenaline) PS- sorry for grammar mistakes my English ain't the best 😂
@rodrigoandrade256
@rodrigoandrade256 2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, I'm not Chewie but maybe I can give you my 10cents of thought on that. I'm a 117kg 24yo white belt and I have competed twice, so I feel like I'm around the same phase you are just a tiny bit more experienced in what you're asking. First, this carefulness not to hurt your trainning partners is more prevalent on big guys like us, since we're usually aware of the potential we have for actually injuring people. In my experience, lighter white belts tend to be more careless. Now answering your question: In my gym (I'm Brazilian, so there's that) we learn that trainning and competing are two different things. There are things you never do in trainning that you can totally do when competing, although you don't have to (crossface is the most common example). This philosophy carries on to submissions. When I'm trainning, I'll try to pull just enough for my buddy to realize the situation and have time to tap. When I'm competing, I'll pull with all my strenght. If the opponent taps quickly enough, I'll let go as fast as possible, if they don't I'll break their arm. Same goes for chokes: If they take too long to tap I'll put them to sleep. When in trainning, it is everyone's responsibility to take care of each other and make sure there will be more trainning opportunities. However, when competing, such responsibilities do not exist. My responsibility is not to play dirty and also to be courteous to my opponent. His health is his responsibility and to an extent, the judge's. Not mine. Of course if by chance your opponent passes out without tapping and the judge hasn't seen yet, you can warn them so not to cause further injuries, but that's very rare. I once saw a friend on a tournament fight try to warn the judge that their opponent's arm was going to break. The judge gave them a punishment for talking to the judge (you cannot do that on tournaments). My friend pulled harder and the other guy eventually tapped, but left the fight with an injury (It didn't fully break) and had to leave the tournament place directly to the hospital. Sorry if the asnwer is too long, I tried to answer with as many details as possible because that's the way I wish people answer me when I have doubts. TL;DR - In competitions, It's your opponent's responsibility to tap before getting injured, if they don't care about their health neither should you (But only inside the rules, never play dirty).

I like the green belt idea. There's such a big difference between a brand new white belt and someone that's been training six or seven months.

Great video! Brings me memories... Here in Brazil, at the 90ties, we had the green belt. I my self was a green belt that was promoted by Jucão, a top notch blackbelt from here that lives in the US now. In fact at that time was very difficult to get the blue and the green was common. Now a days they still exists here as you say as tap in the back, but they are not so common... Thumbsup!

This right here. One of my old instructors was Brazilian, from Brazil and he also used green belts between white and blue. It just meant that you were better (maybe not better, but less spassy) than a brand new white belt, but not quite a blue belt. I kinda liked the concept myself. In comp we would compete as white belts though, or at least I did at the time.

There are no Adult yellows in Lavoto/six blades, but yes we do use Greens. Still technically counts as a white belt. I think it comes from Six Blades and Sensei Xande.

We have a greenbelt in my affiliation and my school. It’s basically the equivalent of a two or three stripe white belt and generally takes about six months to achieve. After greenbelt you will need about 130 hours of mat time plus 98 techniques to achieve blue.
