First time I had to tap to the choke of a student will always be one of the proudest moments of my early coaching days. The German composer Robert Schumann allegedly said: "A true master does not raise pupils. He raises more masters." Getting surpassed by a student is a moment any coach should aim for, not be afraid of.

I joined 10th planet a year-ish ago. I spent an hour in a fundamentals class last week with a high level brown belt. He was and has always been the coolest to me. That’s how all the higher belts have been. They just try to help me learn and it’s so different than other schools I’ve tried. Also, I’m old and not that flexible. 10th planet works for me.

I started off at a 10th planet affiliate and then started gi/nogi at a new gym after I moved cities, one thing I've always loved about nogi is that new people tend to chill out more if they don't immediately know what belt you are. Also, a lack of limitation on what technique lower belts can do also leads to rolls that are more challenging, and even if they don't use stuff like heel hooks the fact that they know what they are and how to defend them at least gives them a solid base to develop later down the track. It's cool to hear the different perspectives.

The physical intuitiveness you referred to I remember from both of my former Taekwondo instructors. One was an 8th degree and the other a 5th degree. That’s to say after decades of sparring they didn’t have to think anymore. Their brains just subconsciously sensed things and their bodies just acted upon them. Really cool to hear about from various arts.

“Move before your mind or you’re late” I’ve felt this in other disciplines. I’m a newbie when it comes to rolling but I see the potential there. It’s like the body reacts in real time but the mind is still taking the time to process the sensory input that’s coming in making sense of it all. Ironically I’ve been in that ‘zone’ playing competitive online games where my body reacts faster than my brain for better or for worse and my mind is lagging behind, making sense of whether that was a good decision or a bad decision that I’ve just made.

I switched from Gi to Nogi at 10th planet last year and honestly i dont think id ever go back. Mostly because of the lack of ranks on display and how it made me stop caring about promotions. I love not know or caring what belt someone is, everyone just rolls together and you dont have to worry like "oh i cant let this guy tap me hes lower rank" or whatever. You just go in there, grapple, and thats all there is to it. Everyone gets treated the same.
@glitchdigger3 жыл бұрын
Yeah man I've always been nogi and really never felt like that very much. There's a certain level of rank awareness that comes if they're wearing a ranked rashguard, but its really just not in the consciousness of the nogi sport mentality. I didn't realize it wasn't like that at Gi schools.

Great video. I spent the last 5 years training in the gi with some no gi. It was a traditional bjj environment with ranks and bowing on and off the mat etc. I really enjoyed my time there but after covid I decided to try a 10th Planet school because I was gravitating more to no gi ...it's been 4 months at 10p now and I absolutely love the relaxed environment. (It's relaxed about stuff I don't care about but really focused on learning and training effectively. I've not seen or heard any weed talk or anything. I wouldn't mind because I like to smoke sometimes. But it's just not part of this particular school I train at. Everyone there just loves to train and there is no focus on rank or strict uniform requirements .... One thing I didn't enjoy about Trad bjj schools is some higher ranks would talk down to lower ranks. It was kind of cringe to me. I think both environments are fun. It just comes down to preference. I still visit other gyms and put the gi on because I enjoy it from time to time. Anyways. Enjoy Jiu Jitsu. It's fun however you roll... Peace. Pyjamas or no Pyjamas. Who cares just fucking train and have fun. 💫🪴💚🤷
@diontaerespress36023 жыл бұрын
Same here. Me and my son started at a school where the main instructor was a black belt from Brazil and was on TUF. I learned a bit but didn't enjoy the environment. Being great at something doesn't mean you're great at teaching. It felt like a money grab and he would do advanced class while we were doing fundamental and only focus on them even though they had an advanced class next. He would get so annoyed if you did something wrong. I ended up leaving and ended up at 10th Planet which made me actually love BJJ. They are great teachers and also offer wrestling, Boxing, and Muay Thai. I love the diversity of people and backgrounds. The wrestlers especially make me better. I don't even care about advancement. I just want to get better and if a belt comes with it that's OK but I'm enjoying what I'm learning either way and so is my son.

Yup instead of playing rubber guard flat on your back were that requires flexibility they taught me to push off the hip with my right leg and be more on my right side hip so instead of being flat on your back you are now on your side way easier to bring the leg up and play rubber guard I have back problems so that small detail helps me out a lot. Also rubber guard should always be a active guard not just a guard you sit in. From what I’ve been taught

I definitely think that no gi and not having belts significantly changes the mind set of everyone who is rolling. As a white belt I had been training in gi classes for a while and I decided to start no gi classes as well (cause it’s fun too duh) and I was rolling significantly better than when I knew what belt they were because I did not know their skill level whatsoever. It also helps that several of the people I rolled with I’ve never rolled with before and I was able to get a lot more submission attempts in than usual. Maybe the guys I was rolling with weren’t that good and I had no idea cuz it was no gi but it definitely felt way different.
