This video is right on time for me. I am a new blue belt who did an open mat at a new gym today. Mostly white belts. I am so passive, each one got an opportunity to smash me for 5mins. I would lock up half guard and just deny submissions/passed. If they got a pass, I would go back to deep half. I eventually got tapped, no big deal. I left there thinking I needed to impose my will more. The white belts were young, a bit heavier than me and not unskilled, but I could take them. I am just so passive lol. So this video is right on time for me. Paused at 27 seconds. I have been back for 5months lol. EDIT: Just came back from an open mat and I absolutely crushed it. I got 2 kimuras, 2 keylocks, 1 armbar and a toe hold. Basically, me asserting my will led to me pressuring people into side control.

Yes! I train at a very competitive gym , we do camps for IBJJF and ADCC and show up in force. We have a renown front headlock series from one of our black belts, and an arm drag system as well. The entire idea is, beat them with violence of action! Just go for it. Hunt it down! Think about your escape if you get caught, outside of that you need to impose your will! And we get laser focused on the two systems, and whether you know what we’re going for or not, it really doesn’t matter (for our upper belts anyways 😂😅) we’re still going to do it!

Thx allot. Subbed today. Been doing bjj for a little over 2 years including the pauses from the lockdowns. 1 stripe white belt and have a strong feeling of stagnating. what i have been finding to be really awesome and helpful is trying to develop that 3rd eye sense for what is open and where the pressure is. i love to try and open up my opponent and splay them flat and getting high up into their armpits whether that is from side control, north south, mount, reverse mount, guard(prefer high guard) and then seeing what present itself to me. it involves reading the opponent energy and pressure he is giving me. the biggest issue i have though is trying to setup and INCITE the kinds of reactions i want. i still get bit too narrowminded in my attack sequences. but i find much better roi being more open minded and even doing catch and release with lower belt and newer folks- like if i catch an americana and release it sometimes i can wristlock or armbar when they defend

Would a good strategy be to pick one sub from each position (or maybe 2) and just hunt for those for say a month? And then change up the following month....I'm feeling this video to be honest. I'm a 4 stripe white and even though i feel my defence, escapes and sweeps are pretty solid, my attack is lacking and I don't get as many subs as I'd like on people of a similar rank or blue. Good advice though, my mind goes blank when thinking of subs to go for, by the time I've flicked through the rolodex the opportunity has gone haha

Beautifully explained - thanks 🙏 - how do you balance the concept of narrowing your focus relative to submissions with the concept of taking whatever they give you (whatever submission presents itself)?
@virtual_self2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to storm on your comments I'll give you my opinion because it might help you out, I don't care about what they give me I always go to a specific submission and try to work my way and will to get it, I even let go guullotines to attack arms and do kimuras. For me it just made me a very good person at kimuras and people are always afraid of it when they roll with me. What's even better is that when you switch for a different focus, let's say guillotine for example (that's what I'm doing now) people are afraid of your kimuras and they'll will get caught I. Guillotines and fear them because you'll get very good at them too. Think of it as a toolbox, I need to learn to work with one tool and than I'll pass to another. BTW this comes from a white belt 😉
@FR-ty5vn2 жыл бұрын
@@virtual_self Thanks 🙏 - yeah, I think we work on different things at each stage of development, though we’re always working on fundamentals. I’m at purple right now and brown or black belts will often tell a guy like me to take what your training partner gives you as opposed to trying to force something. So my question revolves around the balance between focusing on one thing e.g. Kimuras or Guillotines, which I agree is great to focus on one thing and delve deep into it to become an expert at it and have a handful of reliable weapons, with taking what an opponent gives you/leaves open which leaves you well rounded.
@virtual_self2 жыл бұрын
@@FR-ty5vn oh yeah I think at a purple or brown belt you pretty much have paved your way almost reaching the enlightment stage and you pretty much should be going with the flow and take whatever your opponent gives you. Let's not forget that by that time you have almost all tools in your toolbox and you should know what to use and how it can be more effective. 😉
@FR-ty5vn2 жыл бұрын
@@virtual_self yeah, it’s an interesting time and fun - I’ve read a lot about delving deeper into each technique that is part of your game to develop a real expertise, to sharpen those knives in your tool box by focusing on something in particular e.g. limit yourself to only Armbars for the day/week/month, yet to only take what presents itself so I suppose there’s just a balance between the two that I need to understand a little better (maybe it means you have to wait patiently until that Armbar presents itself and be creative using modified versions) - thanks for your thoughts 💭, brother…keep rolling…

When hunting for limbs, perhaps less so for chokes/strangles, it helps to try not to do that animalistic laser focus by *staring* at what you’ll be going for. Opponent will/should think, “uh oh he’s staring at my arm better initiate evasive action!”

Asking any experienced BJJ experts!! I just started my second class of Gi Bjj and rolled with someone who was a purple belt he had about 100lbs over on me. As an inexperienced player I don't know to many submissions so at this point I just try and survive. This purple belt was submitting me like nothing it got to a point where the he cranked my knee so bad I felt a popping sensation. Is this normal or was he an ass and going to hard on a new member. Thoughts?
@carlosrazier4332 жыл бұрын
Probably a dick move to crank on a knee-bar (I'm assuming that's what it is) to the point of popping on anyone, let alone a new white belt. It's normal to get submitted a lot when you're new and it's the best way to learn defense but you should never feel like you're going to get injured when you're going in to train. Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, don't roll with the purple belt or switch gyms.

I'm a white belt that started bjj 7 years ago but for this and that reason I always ended up quitting for a few months and get back at it. That ended this year. I finally found an amazing school and teacher that give me opportunity and actual motivation to go to classes and roll with respect for others but not losing the "aggressive mindset" just more flow than smash. Long story short I'm 40 yo now and I see BJJ on a very different level I used to. I no longer have that obsession that I need to be big and aggressive (as for hunting for any submission I can) and I no longer gasp after a few minutes. I started seeing BJJ as a meditation thing, because I actually enter in the zone when I'm rolling, and I'm always thinking that as a white belt I need to be as much defensive as I can because I need 1st to survive and than to "hunt". I also started to hunt specific things, like for example "kimuras" and for like 1 month I actually ended up letting guillotines and attack Kimura and it went amazingly well, now I'm focusing on guillotine and I'm doing it for the next month like 70% guillotine and 30% Kimura. Best year of training I had since the beginning of this amazing journey and I advise any white belt and blue belt to take a step back and look at things differently.

If you want to laser focus in grappling, learn wresting instead. In wrestling, coaches tell you to learn just 3 moves from every position. You do this and done, you're good. Simple.
@stantoncochran5362 жыл бұрын
I see your point, but I’m thinking he’s meaning when you first get to a dominant position to focus on working for one initial submission, given that they aren’t just giving you another submission, then attack another one that might become open based on their response to the first one.

How to be offensive? I got a horrible and bad idea. Say some slurs or horrible things while rolling. Like "yer a guard puller", or "yer triangle is so bad, it almost look like a rectangle", or "I hope ya get yer blue belt soon so you quit and I don't have to see ya anymore".

This is quite literally useless. "You need to focus on improving your offense to improve your offense" cheers for the 5 minute explanation of that.

I'm no Chewie. Not even remotely close. However, I'm going give my 2 cents that aren't parroting Chewie's advice. Maybe this guy is focusing too much on defense and not putting himself in a position where he can focus on offense. If his focus is on gaining guard and retaining it then maybe it is at the detriment to the rest of his game. Maybe he needs to switch focus to getting sweeps, working from the top, and getting past his opponents' guard. A lot of guys who focus on defense lack strength in this part of their game.

It feels really weird to be here. On this channel. Beacuse I quit jujitsu a few months ago and I still watch his videos. I don't really know how to feel about it and I shouldn't mourn over the fact I still watch these jujitsu videos. Edit: literally after making this comment I found another video by chewy from 4years ago in my suggestions kzbin.info/www/bejne/a57NkKGootp-iKM and I related so much to this. I lost interest in jujitsu and felt like I should go back but didn't. (Still now I feel like I should go back but I know I wont enjoy my time there) And when I told my stepdad I wanted to quit jujitsu. I didn't know how to respond to why. I just was not interested. After about 2 years of training. I keep thinking about reasons to go back and why jujitsu was good for me. But it doesnt feel right to go back and I still feel like there should have been a better reason than "I lost interest" to quit.

@jiujitsustudent6042 жыл бұрын
Jiujitsu is my deepest passion, and I will do it until my body simply cannot tolerate the pain anymore. But that is not the case for everyone. Some people try something and enjoy it for a little while, and then they move on. This could just be one of those things for you. The only thing that I would suggest is to try to deeply examine the reasons why jiujitsu used to be fun and what happened to make it stop being fun. I’m guessing you still actually like it, but there was some kind of change that took place which decreased your interest. If you could figure out what that is and try to mitigate it, you might start training again.

@@jiujitsustudent604 I’m not sure I buy the I lost interest - there are many reasons to quit, but that is not normally on the list - it’s hard, I almost quit many times - in fact, I did back in the 90’s; but the last 6 + years have been consistent except for some injuries and COVID - I am enjoying it now more than ever-just gotta put in the mat time-that I continue to do.
