It represents a glimpse of the current norm in Taiwan, something that was not allowed decades ago during the authoritarian rule of both Chiangs (both the elder and his son).

Like Lenin statues and the Soviet monuments in East European Countries. Some of them are still standing, but most locals don’t want anything with them now. CKS Memorial Hall was built when Taiwan was still under martial law. This kind of memorial halls would never be built after Taiwan turned democracy. CKS and his followers only took up 10% of Taiwan’s population, but ruled over Taiwan until 1990s. Since Taiwan was ruled by CKS’s KMT party for more than 50 years, some of the generation born during the era still support them.

Koxinga was viewed by the Dutch from Indonesia and Spanish from the Philippines as a pirate king. The rumors of Koxinga invading Manila causing the massacre of Chinese by the Spanish. I am very happy that you are so serious about the history of Taiwan, you can also make yourself a professional historian! Looking back at the past history, Chiang Kai-shek has been identified as a cruel butcher, and is cast aside by most of the people now! In short, those unpleasant things have passed, Taiwan is now a free and democratic country, and Taiwan welcomes freedom-loving people to travel! You did a really great job, thanks a lot for sharing!👍😄👏

Accurate from my understanding and I learned new things. The ROC was synonymous with the KMT party (founded in China when Taiwan was under the Japanese empire) and the fact that the KMT party has been voted out of power more often than not since Taiwan's democratization in the 1990's - is telling of Taiwanese peoples' views towards CKS's foreign government exile. I would guess that the majority would abolish the ROC name and constitution if China didn't threaten violence if they did, but havent seen a proper poll about it

On 28th April 1952, the San Francisco Peace Treaty entered into force. On this day, the status of Taiwan become undetermined. On the same day, Japan chose the ROC regime as the China government and signed the Sino-Japanese peace treaty with the ROC regime. In this treaty, the ROC recognized that Japan has renounced sovereignty over Taiwan in San Francisco Peace Treaty. This means that the ROC recognized that the status of Taiwan is undetermined. The issue of Taiwan independence is not a Chinese issue. It is not a choice between reunification of China and separation from China. The true color of the issue of Taiwan independence is an unfinished decolonization job. Why decolonization should be applied to Taiwan? First, Taiwan was a Japanese colony since 1895. Because Japan renounced her territorial sovereignty over Taiwan in 1952 without designating the successor, Taiwan became a former colony with undetermined status. Second, because the post-war disposition of Taiwan is still undetermined, the Allied Powers’ post-war military occupation arrangement is still effective. In other words, Taiwan is still a territory under Allied Powers’ military occupation. Finally, according to UNGA Resolution 1514, decolonization should be applied to non- self-governing territories and lands under military occupation is certainly non-self- governing. Hence, decolonization should be applied to Taiwan.

The history you elaborated also explains the modern Taiwanese culture and main stream attitudes towards dictators and dictatorship. FYI, the gathering event looks like some sort of protest or rally for animal welfare. All I can see is slogan said “anti bullying” “clean feeding” and the speaker said she is a writer and artist who familiar with topics of animal welfare, etc. a true demonstration of vibrant democracy, fitting well with this video. 🎉

It was a march because the government wanted to push a policy to move out stray dogs and cats from areas that already had an intact ecology, but they disagreed. But they ignore that stray cats and dogs have no natural enemies in ecologically sound areas. They attack and hunt other animals not for food, but out of curiosity.

Also from my perspective China didn't colonize Taiwan in a sense because The people from Taiwan themself is actually chinese but what i do know was chinese people who migrated to taiwan did actually killed the aborigin that originally lived there and the nationalist government of taiwan did admit that. So in a sense China didn't really colonized Taiwan but at the same time they did. The situation rn is kinda similar to chinese malaysian and indonesian like me we're not original from here but our grandparent/parents came from china.

Also note that from what i understand taiwanese local language was hokkien dialect so yeah the chinese mainlander from central or north wouldn't really understand but if you are a mainlander from south especially from fu-jian province it would be no problem because they also speak hokkien. Hokkien language is also used by chinese malay, singapore & indo but from what i understand the hokkien language between them, taiwanese and mainlander is a bit different now but overall you still can understand a bit.

It’s great summary about history in Taiwan. Although there were some negative things toward Chiang Kai-shek, there are lots of good things he accomplished in his legacy including economic development, infrastructure projects, technology investment, etc. More importantly, his determination to fight the communism was one of the greatest achievement in my opinion. His son continued his leadership and brought Taiwan to full democracy as well as advanced technology hub as we saw today. Really hope you can make another video to talk about the remaining part of Taiwan’s history from 1980-2023 where you will see how Taiwan encountered difficulties (not being recognized as a country and compressed by Communism China) but strived to survive and prosper today.

@Antraeus3 ай бұрын
This is ridiculous. When you dig a little deeper you learn that Chiang had no choice. Mao Zedong would have had him executed had he not escaped from the mainland. And there were groups of people in Taiwan who resented the Kuomintang's presence and sought to destroy them. They had two choices: accept the republic or face Cultural Revolution hysteria and misery. So in fact, history will show that they ought to have been grateful. The truth will win in all of these issues in the end. Temporary ignorance and blindness to the truth are dangerous. The difference between socialism and communism is massive. One is ideal and the other is a nightmare. So in fact he saved your asses!
